Eagles wide receiver Kevin Curtis will have sports hernia surgery, coach Andy Reid said today.

The full extent of the injury will not be clear until the surgery is performed, so no timetable was given for a possible return, but expect it to be a while, given the history of the injury. A reasonable timeframe probably would be six to eight weeks from the surgery, which Curtis told the Daily News will take place Thursday morning. The regular season starts Sept. 7. There is little chance the Eagles' leading 2007 receiver (77 catches, 1,110 yards) will be full-strength before October, at best.

Curtis becomes the third Eagles player to suffer a sports hernia in the last few years. Donovan McNabb had surgery during the 2005 season after trying to play through the injury. L.J. Smith had offseason surgery in the spring of 2007 but the injury lingered, especially after he suffered another injury to the area during training camp. Smith cautioned yesterday that Curtis should not try to come back too soon. Previously, cornerback Sheldon Brown played the 2003 season with the injury, something Brown said yesterday he would not do again.

Curtis was injured against Carolina in last Thursday's preseason game. He tried to practice this week but was unable to run hard because of the pain, leading to the decision to have the surgery.

Reid said he is not interested in bringing in another receiver at this time, though the Falcons have released 36-year-old Joe Horn. Cardinals wideout Anquan Boldin has asked to be traded, but Arizona has said it will not trade him.

With Reggie Brown still out with a hamstring injury, suffered on the first play against Carolina, the starting receivers Friday at New England will be rookie DeSean Jackson in Brown's spot and either Hank Baskett or Greg Lewis in Curtis' spot.

Curtis, coming off the most productive season of his career, signed as a free agent from the St. Louis Rams before last season.

"It won't be a threat to what we do," Reid said. "Other guys will have to step up for the time he's out."

Reid said he feels Brown will be ready for the start of the regular season. Brown agreed that was likely.

Baskett has had a strong training camp, as has the rookie, Jackson. The words of offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and McNabb earlier this week, cautioning against overhyping Jackson, now seem academic. Jackson, the team's leading receiver in the preseason, seems assured of a fairly prominent role to start the regular season, if that weren't assured already.

Baskett said that one of the good things about the Eagles' West Coast-spread the ball philosophy is that "you don't have all your eggs in one basket," no pun intended. He said other receivers will step up to fill the void.

"We all have different things we're good at," Baskett said. "Kevin goes down, I have to step up and fill his shoes."

Smith said he would tell Curtis that after the surgery, he will feel like he can do more than he really can safely do, that he needs to take it very slowly to avoid reinjury.

i hate trolls, and try not to be totally negative. but i never thought i would say this.. we really can't afford to lose curtis. i mean... greg lewis?? i was really hoping he would finally get cut this year. lets hope desean is everything he seems to be and brown gets healthy fast (avant too.. still think he is a great possession receiver prospect).

Reid is a moron....does not want to bring in another reciever - especially when Curtis is probably gone for half the year now...with a sports hernia. Who caught the most passes last year and had over a 1000 yards..oh yea, Curtis was. Just trade a 1st round pick and something to the Cardinals for Boldin. Christ...Lito and 1, just do it....I am sick of this nonsense, and Reid...we need a new coach!!

Greg Lewis better not be on the team when the season starts. I don't care if he is a nice guy like Reno Mahe. It is time to cut him loose. I can't see them keeping 6 WRs, and G. Lew should not make the team over Curtis, Brown, Jackson, Baskett, and Avant

LoL. Murphy's law and the "blind" Reid cant see its now time to look outside the organization for another wideout. Let's hope the "Lito Chip" is good enough to land someone to fill Curtis' role.

We were at best a 9-7 team with him. We are done now unless Jackson can step up. Curtis was the only reciever we had who could at least be considered a number 2, the rest are #3 and 4's. I would trade both our 1st's and keep Lito, hell Andy hasn't used a first in two years! And the ones we do use have been hit or miss. I say we go "all in". If we miss on this, the fans would have no recourse to complain that we didn't try.

The price just goes up for the Eagles with any team they contact. They were already in need of a WR, now they are under the gun and will be expected to overpay for one. Why does the Eagles management remind me so much of the Phillies management? Being good is enough for both, never go above and beyond to make a push to go for it. (except TO which apparently has left them gun shy)

Before I was always unsure Andy knew what he was talking about not needing another receiver, but I went along with it. Now, the fact that he is saying the same thing with the likes of only Jackson, Lewis, and Baskett healthy, I can officially say that Andy Reid has let the grease get to his melon. If I were D McNabb, and the Eagles weren't on the phone with Arizona, offering them everything they possibly can, then I will be at the front of the line taking diving practice off the Ben Franklin. And please people, Joe Horn won't work, and for the guy that said Chris Henry, actually that doesn't deserve a comment back...

No chance of getting a starting WR from outside now. The Eagles knew about this since Thursday! Now the front office has let everyone know about it and lose any leverage in a trade. I am so disappointed in the Eagles brain trust right now.

As we've seen twice already, a sports hernia will take a year or more. So be prepared for a full season of Greg Lewis as your #2 receiver. That guy wouldn't even make my flag football team. But no, we don't need to bring in another receiver. I can't wait for Elton Brand to blow out his knee. This city is cursed.

this epitomizes the reason we cry for a proven wide receiver. Until this incompetent organization listen to the fans and get a game breaking wide receiver...they continue to masquerade 3rd stringers for starters and go no where. The silver lining in this cloud is they can start "Jackson" who have more talent than all the receivers we had last year. Andy Reid...."times yours"

I have a pretty good feeling the Eagles are ATLEAST trying to get in touch with the Cardinals about Boldin, but who knows if the Cardinals will do anything. They may SAY they aren't trading him, but money (in this case draft picks and players) talks and BS walks. And if you people really think Joe Horn is the answer here, you are just as crazy as Reid saying they aren't interested in another WR. He is like 87 years old!!! You're all blowing smoke. You know fat Andy thinks he can fit anyone into his system. It would make too much sense to trade a number one draft pick, since he hasn't used it in the last two drafts, but the fat boy won't do it. Additionally, Boldin would command too much money. Not only would they have to give up the pick, but renegoiate his contract as well. Won't happen.

It's time for Fraction Jackson to step up...he can do it...or we can attempt to pick up a receiver... I haven't seen a top flight player go for any higher than fourth round pick in the last 2 years worth of trades... Don't we have a couple of 1st rounders next year- if they're not even looking outside the organization or willing to give one up, it must mean they are just prepping for the Kolb era and letting the McNabb window close because they don't think a top flight receiver will get this team over the hump

Here's the deal. the eagles have made it pretty obvious they know they need a stud receiver based on their attempts at Randy Moss and Larry Fitzgerald (along with Roy Williams). With Curtis now out, I'm sure they are working on something. No matter what, they can't say, "We need another receiver." That would give them no bargaining room with another team like the Cardinals. Has anyone noticed that they've been saying they don't need another receiver all off-season?...yet they continue to go after big time receivers. Andy Reid would never say they need another receiver and thats they way he should conduct business....like that jackiemartlo said.....poker face fellas...give em time.

So lets recount...The Eagles starting two wide recievers are injured...Brown has not been able to stay on the field and Curtis will be out for half a year and probably subpar even if he comes back. They have no competent starting fullback right now so much that with the season starting in two weeks they are offering the job to a guy who has never played the position even at the collegiate level. Their biggest free agent aquistion is having hamstring problems and can't get healthy, his replacement wants nothing more than to be dealt to anybody and get out of town. Their number one offensive lineman has yet to start play due to depression(playing for this team I can see why) and the man he needs to work with closest Mr. Ruyan has done everything in his power to ridicule him for his problems. Now they don't want to get another wide reciever? And yet Mr.Lorie, Mr. Reid and Mr. McNabb tell us they are poised to win the Superbowl ...Is that right? Am I missing something here. Wake up people ..I was on my way out with this team as it was and I think this clinches the deal ....time to change my colors

Typical Reid, blind as a ten ton bat and too stubborn to admit he is wrong again. Not to get personal but to see this - is it any wonder his kids got messed up because he was too stubborn to see the problem. Admitting you have faults is the first step - one he is not willing to take. Lito wants out, our draft picks from the first round generally never play anyway so give them both and get Boldin. MOVE ON! What we fail to see is that our entire team has about another 2 - 3 yrs (including Westbrook) of possible playoff contention before it needs to get blown up. Time is wasting and we have a slight opportunity to make a little noise with a good deal now. Oh, by the way, when Curtis comes back in October isn't it a nice thought to have Curtis AND Boldin as your 1 and 2 then have others fill the gaps. What a concept - plan ahead!

this is the problem with having the coach and gm in the same person. Reid can't say he needs a new WR..it weakens an already weak hand. He has to play it cool in the media and see what shakes out. As for Curtis, I wouldn't pencil him in until Week 8 against Atlanta. Westbrook = Atlas

The Bengals can be bought, and once they are, Ocho Cinco can finally bring his future HOF play here, sans all the T.O. distractions we had when the last "great" receiver came and left. Before any comparisons, Chad respects the team mentality and his stunts are funny and good-natured. T.O. is just sad and egotistical, and he has nothing to show for it. Ocho Cinco in '08!

Reid will have to find another receiver because otherwise a rookie will have to *GASP* start and possibly be productive in his system. He’d lose all credibility and, truly, think it would do his head in.

Do we need another WR... of course we do. Will Andy Reid go after someone who has the skill to be a #1 receiver? OF COURSE NOT. Once again, we'll put all our trust and faith into Reggie Brown and Greg Lewis. Fantastic. Can't wait for the season to start!

A smart organization would address the single most important position keeping their team from having a real chance to win super bowls. Wr has been the worst position on the team for easily 10 years.(except 4 TO) Will the eagles send sheppard or draft picks, or both to Arizona to get a perennial pro-bowl receiver? We don't really think they're that smart do we...

First of all, you need to stop making comments about Reid and his family. That is just outright disrespectful. Second, for the entire 10 years since Reid has been coach he speaks in the literal moment. For example, when he said he is not interested in adding someone at the present time. He literally means in that same moment when being asked. Furthermore, they knew about this injury on Friday, so I am sure they have been exploring options. Next time Reid offers up a "pompous" comment, realize he is answering questions and giving comments in the very literal sense. Even the journalists in this town don't realize that yet. Thirdly- if you think they don't need an upgrade, then why did the pursue Moss? They offered the great Moss more guaranteed money and a longer contract but he chose to stay. And then the Eagles forced AZ to re-negotiate with Fitzgerald because they were going to pry him loose offering Sheppard and R. Brown. Just like past coaches, Reid will not be respected in this town until after he leaves; same will happen to D-Mac.

Come on the Eagles don't want to really win. They just want your money. Just like every other team in this city. If you want to win now you don't trade out of the first round two years in a row. Why oh why do you continue to be played like suckers. This city needs a real owner that wants to win like Jerry Jones. What has Lurie ever done besides being born with a silver spoon in his mouth and ruining the career of Kathleen Turner . Winning starts at the top. Your owner is a dweeb. Go Cowboys.

Jeez. Does it get any better in our fair city. Why so unfair? Why is Andy so godd***m stubborn? What's the point? These guys may step up but they are going to get knocked down as they are proven to be not-so-good. Greg Lewis, Hank Baskett, Jason Avant and DeSean Jackson a rookie. Are we the only ones seeing this? Is that for real? Why not call Joe Horn ASAfingP or conduct a trade for a PROVEN WIDE RECEIVER?! God it sucks being a Philly fan sometimes when the lunatic is at the helm.

I guess Andy will just wait until we lose a couple of games like last year with the punt returner. By then Joe Horn will be signed by Dallas and we'll be asking for Reno Mahe's phone #. Unbelievable-it really is a curse to be a Philly sports fan. Ughh!

Why does Andy Reid say such ridiculous statements such as "It won't be a threat to what we do," ....when we loose our alleged #1 wide receiver?? It makes me just want to strangle him!!! Come On, are you serious???....... You can’t argue his OVERALL winning record. But just once I wish we had a coach that would just be straight with us. Tell it like it REALLY is. Why do we have to always guess what he REALLY means when he says stupid stuff???..... Try for Boldin. The Cards will likely not give him up, but it is worth a try. I can see it now, screen pass to Westbrook, screen pass to Westbrook again, screen pass to Jackson, 4th down and time to punt! Double team those two if they are out there and take away 90% of our offense! Well, we can always hope that the defense scores a few touchdowns a game for us! Please help me, not another season of mediocrity!!

The Eagles need Boldin, however they don't want to sound desperate or they lose leverage. I would say the same thing Andy said and listen to what the Cardinals have to say. The Cardinals have a mess two things solve it, lots of money or a trade. The Cardinals don't like to part with money. Just hope the Cowgirls don't get Boldin.

get it through your heads, arizona does not want lito. they won't give him a new contract which is what lito wants, so they would be in the same situation with a different player. that is the only reason LIto has not been moved already, his contract situation is holding up everything. also the cardinals already have Rod Hood (who the Eagles should have resigned) and Rodgers-Cromartie that they drafted in the first round. no team needs three good CB's (except for the Eagles I guess). it just does not make sense from Arizona's side to get rid of boldin for Lito and more than likely a 2nd at best. the eagles will not give up a 1st even if they did i dont know if arizona would be interested. just accept that the starting WR's for the opener are going to be reggie brown (if healthy), greg lewis and desean jackson. have fun with that.

Curtis and Brown, who would be the 3rd and 4th receivers on any other team, are our starting receivers, and now are hurt. If this organization could swallow its pride and admit that their receivers aren't good enough, they would be aggressive in pursuing another receiver. Alas, we've heard so many times how happy the team is with its receivers. They seem to have a love affair with small slow possession receivers who can get beat up by opposing defensive backs. I smell the return of Todd Pinkston...

Please, no Pinkston!! didderbops is right. Why cant they just be a good evaluator (in comparison to other teams in the NFL) and be man enough to admit you are not that good at the position AND...here is the key get something done about it!! I know they tried for some....but they were real far reaches...Moss. This is not quite as far of a reach and we have something to offer besides just money. Lito. Heck throw in Baskett and Lewis too if they want them, duds. I love the little guy Jackson though. Finally something to get excited about besides Westbrook.

You know last year when the Eagles had noone to return punts they went back to get Reno Mahe to earn us the worse starting field position. So here are some names that we could bring back for WR: Freddie Mitchell, ( I heard he's a substitute teacher), Billy McMullen, we could use a lot more drops from him. My choice would be Todd Pinkston, so he can stop runnin for keys passes because he scared of contact football. So we're relying on a washed up QB, a delusional coach, and dependance on a first year 6 foot WR to be the star. Yea this season has Tampa written all over it.

"We're fine with the guys we have" is what Reid and Banner were saying while they were pursuing Moss. Think about it: if you're suddenly desperate to find a wide receiver, you don't go about it by standing in front of the cameras and saying "We're desperate to find a wide receiver."

Perhaps one should begin to look at the training staff and question why so mant of our players are the ones in the league who have suffered so many sports hernias. Seems to me there is not enough emphasis on strectching properly, not to mention how often there has been a misdiagnosis on the head trainers player assessments. Remember; he is the same guy who said Donovan had a abdominal strain before he completely tore off ligaments on both sides of his groin. Not to mention how he gave the nod for L.J. Smith to go back out on the field prematurely. Guess it's time hold somebody accountable fot this. Well when all else fail let's do what's easiest, Just Blame Donovan! It's his fault he should have been traded after the season. Now he has to knock the dust off of his Superman costume and run around like a desperate QB just to win over his critical fans.

Doesn't seem like the Eagles have a whole lot in terms of trading chips. -Know who does, though...? Dallas. Plenty of mid-round picks (two 3s, two 4s), PLENTY of depth (it may not seem like it yet, but it is a fact that they will be releasing several players who will be contributors on other teams this year). Whatever anyone else comes up with for Boldin, the Cowboys can probably beat--if they want him bad enough (which they should). And from there, it'd be even more of a cakewalk through the superbowl. (Seriously: there's a big rumor that they're already close to a deal: Boldin for DE/DT Marcus Spears, plus a first-rounder next year.... Philly fans should be very afraid.)

Trade Brown and Lito for Boldin. Pickup Horn. Temporary starting tandem of Baskett and Boldin. Horn, Jackson, and Avant as backups. Get rid of Lewis. When Curtis returns you have Curtis and Boldin as starters which would be groovy. Horn, Baskett, Jacskon, and Avant as interchangeable parts. Andy, get with the program cuz it can save some wear and tear on MVP Westbrook.

Fact - Boldin will play for Cardinals this season. Fact - Eagles will win games this year. Fact- Any human being who believes they can predict the outcome of an NFL season for any give team is more likely to be wrong than right.

Curtis will be pushed to come back too soon, when the other receivers flunk the catch and run test, then either get hurt again or play sub - par all year. It's beyond belief that Reid can't see the need for an upgrade on the current crop of receivers minus Curtis. Here we go again: no receivers and no running plays. That's the West Coast Offense à la Reid.

ya'll act like this is madden 09 where you can force trades & roster moves...just because curtis got hurt doesn't mean that the birds should panic....believe it or not we have more pressing needs than wr...special teams is still in shambles & the defense needs to be consistant........in 04' the offense didn't get us to the bowl.......we had great defense & special teams play...both has been inconsistant since...the wr core now is still better than, small, johnson, freeman..etc......but those teams were lights out on defense....would i like for us to get another wr..sure but not for the sake of overpaying........remember this...it's easier to plug holes on offense than defense.....

As long as Reid is the coach, the eagles will NEVER win a SB. Boldin and Jackson is a good combo, but when's the last time Reid/Lurie done anything that made sense. The NFC East is the toughest in the conference, and we'll be at the bottom looking up again because Lurie wants to be cheap.
