Could Eagles be thinking QB in draft?

POSTED: Sunday, January 22, 2012, 8:00 PM

MOBILE, Ala. -- With Michael Vick turning 32 in the offseason and Vince Young expected to move on in free agency, the Eagles might very well look for a quarterback somewhere in the early rounds, especially since they have an extra second-round pick, courtesy of the Kevin Kolb trade with Arizona.

Stanford's Andrew Luck is expected to become the top overall pick in the draft, and Baylor's Heisman Trophy winner, Robert Griffin III, is expected to go soon after, long before the Eagles draft 15th overall. In any case, neither Luck nor Griffin will be in Mobile this week, and what looked like an extraordinary QB draft class lost a little luster when Oklahoma's Landry Jones and Southern Cal's Matt Barkley decided to stay in school.

But there are Senior Bowl QBs who could interest the Birds, particularly in the second round or later. They include Arizona's Nick Foles, Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden, San Diego State's Ryan Lindley, and Michigan State's Kirk Cousins.

Foles, a transfer from Michigan State, hails from a school that has never produced a prominent NFL quarterback. But he's 6-5, 240, and is said to possess excellent tools.

Weeden, 6-4, 220, is intriguing in that some observers think he might be a first-round talent, but he almost certainly won't be drafted there, at age 28, having spent five years playing minor league baseball. Eagles fans no doubt will draw a parallel with Watkins, the ex-firefighter. Lindley is a 6-4, 230-pounder whose draft stock suffered this year when he managed to complete only 52.5 percent of his passes.

Cousins, 6-3, 205, had an excellent year and could be on the rise from his early third-to-fourth round projection.

the eagles should use a second round pick on a QB who has NO CHANCE OF STARTING.

So Giants are in it again, nice job Andy. 13 years one SB appearence and now wins. Guess Lurie should not have stuck with you so long and hired COughlin instead.

How about the Eagles stop playing, lets build for the longhaul with their draft picks and do what it takes to get 2 impact defensive players. Impacted players, not Brandon Graham; another wasted pick by andy.

The "fire-Reid" lemmings can't see two feet in front of their faces. The players like him as a coach, more specifically, Vick likes and respects him. The way you handle this is by giving the whole thing one more shot. You have to. You set it up this way with Vick, the free agent signings, etc. If it doesn't work in 2012 then you blow it up. Changing the head coach at this juncture makes no sense, and anyone advocating otherwise is saying so out of emotion, not logic.

No one wants a 'project QB' here in Philly, nor should they. A young guy needs to come in and learn the system for a year, to be ready to step in and take over in 2013 for Michael Vick. For me, that QB is Brandon Weeden. He's 28, which is 'old' -- but he's mature, he's run a pro-style offense, he's dealt with a stud receiver at OK State (meaning temperament, wanting the football, and so on), and he has the size and arm to succeed in the NFL, in my opinion. He doesn't have a lot of wear and tear on him, and I don't think his mechanics require much tuning at the pro level. Seems like an excellent fit for a team who wants a seamless transition from one 'regime' to the next.

It's a requirement for the Eagles to draft a QB. The Eagles should draft Kellen Moore. Vick has 2 years left in Philly. Alex Blasscyk, Nation's #1 Sports Handicapper. You can follow Alex Blasscyk on Twitter @blasscyk

They should. You can't rely on Vick to stay healthy and what do we have for a decent backup?
Looking forward to another year of Andy saying he needs to do a better job.

I am amazed how many people state how dumb the Eagles organization is, especially based on the post and suggestions I see on what the Eagles should be doing.. 90% of you making these posts were so in favor of what the Eagles did during last off season, but since it didnt work for now (because I believe it will) you were never in favor of it, and they should have done something else. So smart are so many of you, but if the Eagles were taking into account some of what some of you "I know how to get this team right" opinions, this team will be the next Rich Kotite Eagles squads. We all want to think we are smarter than the "Fat Man" as he is so much called, but if you were better, believe me SOMEONE in the NFL would find you, and you'll be working for someone instead of posting nonsense on here. Just either support the Eagles or get on the bandwagon of some other team of your choice.

Might as well wait until next year when we have a new coach and GM after an even more disastrous season. Maybe the next GM and coach will actually be able to pick talent and/or realize quality > quantity.

UNBLOCKED pass rushers will injure any QB you start today [ribs and shoulder hits]. Remember the pounding Vick took even in the pre-season vs the Browns? That was a big glaring Uh-Oh.

The O-line did improve halfway thru the season.
