Could Eagles be thinking QB in draft?

POSTED: Sunday, January 22, 2012, 8:00 PM

MOBILE, Ala. -- With Michael Vick turning 32 in the offseason and Vince Young expected to move on in free agency, the Eagles might very well look for a quarterback somewhere in the early rounds, especially since they have an extra second-round pick, courtesy of the Kevin Kolb trade with Arizona.

Stanford's Andrew Luck is expected to become the top overall pick in the draft, and Baylor's Heisman Trophy winner, Robert Griffin III, is expected to go soon after, long before the Eagles draft 15th overall. In any case, neither Luck nor Griffin will be in Mobile this week, and what looked like an extraordinary QB draft class lost a little luster when Oklahoma's Landry Jones and Southern Cal's Matt Barkley decided to stay in school.

But there are Senior Bowl QBs who could interest the Birds, particularly in the second round or later. They include Arizona's Nick Foles, Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden, San Diego State's Ryan Lindley, and Michigan State's Kirk Cousins.

Foles, a transfer from Michigan State, hails from a school that has never produced a prominent NFL quarterback. But he's 6-5, 240, and is said to possess excellent tools.

Weeden, 6-4, 220, is intriguing in that some observers think he might be a first-round talent, but he almost certainly won't be drafted there, at age 28, having spent five years playing minor league baseball. Eagles fans no doubt will draw a parallel with Watkins, the ex-firefighter. Lindley is a 6-4, 230-pounder whose draft stock suffered this year when he managed to complete only 52.5 percent of his passes.

Cousins, 6-3, 205, had an excellent year and could be on the rise from his early third-to-fourth round projection.

It's not the Quarterback with the Eagles. It's clear some of you have never played a down of football in your life. Some of you and the writers were lobbying for Spagnuolo to come back. There is no evidence that Spags is any better at putting together a defense than Juan. I don't understand why there are so many groupies for Spags.

His stats aren't evidence he's any better than what the Eagles presently have. With the Giants he inherited a stellar defense, or at least the pieces, in 2007, it's not like he hand picked that talent.

Dexter, Spags crafted probably the greatest defensive game plan in NFL history in that Super Bowl against the Patriots. There's your evidence that he's a better D coordinator than lousy Castillo.

And for the idiot who thinks fans want Vick out because he's black, you don't know this city's sports fans too well. We would root for the devil himself if he could get us a championship, so even if Eagles fans were racist they would want Vick as the quarterback if he was capable of winning close games and passing efficiently enough to win games which he has proved repeatedly throughout his career that he isn't.

I suppose the same people who think people are down on Vick because he's black also think:
    1) Jets fans are frustrated w/ Sanchez because he's Hispanic
    2) Ravens fans are frustrated w/ Flacco because he's white & went to Delaware.

If they ignor the Defensive side of the ball and use a 1st or 2nd round pick for a QB, they are dumber than I thought. The need for Linebackers and Safeties is glaring on this team and if they wait til the 3rd and 4th rounds to select either, they are idiots.

Reid believes he can WIN and score with the West Coast offense...the only problem is Montana, Rice and the SF defense is not on his roster.Teams that run this offense have Coaches smart enough to have a team that can play position football when they are ahead in a game.

1.Dump Vick. Never going to win anything with this guy.
    2. Pull out all stops in going after P.Manning. He is not going back to Indy. Eagles make sense for him--great offensive weapons with a chance to win it all with a real QB.
    3. Draft a developmental QB in mid round.

With all the talk about teams lining up for P. Manning, Eagles make most sense. Imagine him throwing to these guys. Also he would be able to stand up to dopey playcalling (please, please, spirit of Al Davis; please take Marty M) and execute his own plays. He knows more about offense than everybody on Birds combined.

Get rid of Celek?..What!!! He's one of the few players on this team that have any heart. Why would you want to get rid of him? More importantly when he doesn't have to block all game he puts up good numbers. I don't think some of you even watch the games. You just like to whine.

That last comment was for Tyrone7. For all the people that like to bring up Vick and his $100M. You can't call him a $100M bust because he hasn't been paid $100M yet. He'll only get that amount if he plays out his Six year contract, which he won't. Only $36M is guaranteed. Was Vick a bust when he was carrying this team in 2010?

I telling everyone the Eagles are going to trade for Luck, that is why they traded Kolb. They needed the extra pick.

As long as the Eagles are committed to Andy's bizarre, impossible scheme of giving Jeff Lurie a Super Bowl victory on the cheap, this team will never reach that next level. It's almost enough (and I mean really, really close) to turn me into a 49'ers fan (I was born out there, but raised in South Jersey). All Andy will do is give us another Kolb, another QB in round two that every other team rated as a fourth-round pick. This crew makes me ill. Philadelphia Eagles fans deserve so much more.

Another thought. What the Eagles really need is not so much a DC or even a new coach (much as I dislike Reid), but a first-rate director of player personnel. They need a guy who can no to Andy and Howie Baby. They need a guy who can draft starters, with the long-term goal of developing those starters into position-dominating players. In other words, somebody like the guys the Steelers, the Giants, the Saints, the Packers and New England employ to win every year.
