Cole Was with Babin When Reid Called

POSTED: Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 12:59 PM

The Eagles' locker room reacted to the release of Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Babin Wednesday the way you would expect -- younger players seemed shocked, older ones said they've seen such things before.

DE Trent Cole, Babin's hunting buddy, said Babin was in Cole's garage, getting ready to head home, when the call came from Eagles coach Andy Reid.

"He said, 'yeah, they just released me.' I thought he was playing at first ... he wasn't," Cole said. "It was shocking to him ... He's got a family to take care of."

"We're going to move on ... I know Jason's going to find a great home, he's going to be successful. He's going to make somebody happy."

DE Brandon Graham said he lined up in Babin's spot Wednesday. Babin was claimed on waivers by Jacksonville. An NFL source said Buffalo and Washington also placed claims.

Graham and rookie DE Vinny Curry, part of the stated "youth movement" reason for Babin's release, embraced the idea of getting more snaps but said they were sorry to see Babin go.

Middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans said the business side of football never surprises him. Reporters pressed players on what message the Eagles might be trying to send underachieving players; not many wanted to engage on that topic

"This goes on everywhere, this ain't nothing new; this happens on every team," Cole said. "Now you know how real this game is, and what this game's all about."

Quarterback Michael Vick, who did not practice, told your Eagletarian that he was about to take another imPACT test, a hurdle he must clear to return from concussion. Vick did not pass the test he took Monday.

***

DT Fletcher Cox (tailbone bruise) said he will not practice today, but hopes to practice by Friday and thinks he can play Sunday night at Dallas. C Dallas Reynolds (ankle) was not scheduled to practice; LG Evan Mathis took Reynolds' snaps and said he might be playing center Sunday, with Danny Watkins at left guard.

***

Backup safety David Sims acknowledged he is disappointed he hasn't gotten a chance to win a starting job, given the Eagles' struggles at the position.

Whether Vick passes the test or not Andy should be smart and keep Foles in the starting lineup. Vick is on his way out so why even bother?

hopefully that will be a walk up call for Trent (he's was becoming a mini-Babin trying to look cool in his wide 9 stance)Trent used to be team player but now all seems to be about is sacks

If we are going to get rid of the Babins for younger guys, then might as well sit Vick(I'd rather he would be cut but that ain't happenin) and give Foles the reps.

The wide nine is a gimmick that enjoyed early success but has been figured out by offensive coordinators a long time ago. What team in the NFL has a position coach dictate to the Defensive coordinator what scheme will be used ? We need ends who can play both the run and pass, not one-dimensional guys like Babin. Time to replace Curt Coleman too. He is really bad.

The answer to "what its all about" is winning games. I don't think Trent meant that...

Me either. He's already said it was a business and that's his outlook. It's not about winning or losing as much as it's about getting paid.

"he has a family to take care of." Are you kidding me?? How many millions of dollars has he made and Cole is worried about Babin being able to take care of his family?? WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!

"Backup safety David Sims acknowledged he is disappointed he hasn't gotten a chance to win a starting job, given the Eagles' struggles at the position." I would be more than disappointed if I was a healthy safety on the Eagles who could not win playing time over Kurt Coleman. That's the coaches way of telling Sims that he reeeeaaaallly sucks.

I disagree. I seriously question the Eagles' coaches ability to evaluate who can play and who cannot. Bryce Brown is a prime example. V.Cully is another. Reid would have these players rotting on the bench forever and a day if not for changing circumstances that bred necessity. We'd probably NEVER get to see them play until they finally get cut and go on to star on another team. Sheesh!! Reid must go.

What are you babbling about, essell? The Eagle recognized Brown's talent and took him in like the 7th round and said at the time that they did it that they thought he was a possible 1st rd talent if he had played in college so they were 1 up on the rest of the NFL in that regard. He also sat this long because he plays behind a top three NFL RB who is more explosive than he is. How would he get time in front of Shady? Also, V. Curry is going to be a back-up behind Graham. He was mentioned because as the third stringer with babin around, he never got on the field. ow he will get 20-25 snaps. Get a clue.
