Chip's on the table, Birds interview McCoy
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
Various reports said Oregon coach Chip Kelly was deciding Sunday between going to the Eagles and staying at Oregon, as the Birds' braintrust flew to Denver to interview Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.
Those reports said the Cleveland Browns' brass has flown home from the Kelly courtship in Arizona, ready to renew its search without the Oregon coach. Of course, those reports might be no more accurate than the late Friday-early Saturday reports that had Kelly wrapping up the details of a deal with the Browns.
The Eagles jumped into the Kelly sweepstakes big time Saturday with a luncheon meeting in Arizona that lasted until after midnight, but just like the marathon session with the Browns on Friday, it ended without an agreement.
Before Thursday night's Fiesta Bowl victory over Kansas State, Oregon seemed to anticipate Kelly's departure, to the extent that it was reported offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich would succeed him. But given the deep pockets of Oregon's top alum, Nike's Phil Knight, it could be that Kelly decides to stay with the Ducks for a big pay raise. He has never spoken of any sort of hunger for the NFL, where he has never worked. last year, Kelly reportedly agreed to coach the Tampa Bay Bucs, then changed his mind hours later.
The only bit of clarity to emerge on the Eagles' search was that one of their interviewees, Syracuse coach Doug Marrone, has signed on to coach the Buffalo Bills. Colts interim coach/offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley remain to be interviewed fiollowing their teams' Sunday playoff games. Arians is in the hospital in Baltimore Sunday, battling an inner ear infection.
The Eagles also have asked permission to talk to Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, but that premission has not yet been granted.
- keep feeding kelly like everones doing, send him down in the sec and he'll resighn within a year from coaches burnout
- McCoy as the HC and Lovie as the DC would excite a lot of Eagles fans. Lets get it on!!!!!!
sorry....but I don't want Kelly. DocPhillyfan
I said it before I'll say it again.....Gus Bradley for HC, Kyle Shanahan for OC! Do it Eagles!!! Chump Kelly is a no-go! Panthro2011- Why would Kyle Shanahan bail on his dad for the same position? Only way he becomes a coach for us is if he's the HC.

Dallas sucks 1000hugs
Impressed with the way Bradley coaches his defense. Just watched Seattle beat the Skins. Knows how to use his linebackers, something we haven't seen in Philadelphia for a long time. watsonmr
Gruden seems to have that deer in the headlights look and the Bengals o did
not look very inspired yesterday. Bobby Danger
Interviewing McCoy is a good idea. Missed on Marrone. The other guy is Gus Bradley.
Hire Chip Kelly and watch out, Lurie. Half of us won't watch, until he wins 11 games, and that might never happen. armchairGM
What worries me about McCoy is his personality. Seems like alot of people are unsure if he has the makeup to be the boss, almost like another Jason Garret type. Starting to lean towards Bradley. Stephen45
Chip Kelly just likes to hear little rich boys begging him. Lurie has no pride, Banner told the little prima donna Kelly to shove it. Taser
One other guy the Eagles should be looking at is Mike Zimmer, remember him from NFL's hard knocks? That guy is a nut, plus he got Pac Man to be a reliable DB. He's had plenty of interviews in the past but probably has rubbed owners the wrong way with his candor. He is the guy who would tell Howie Roseman to F himself, which probably needs to be done on a daily basis anyway. He's loaded with passion and comfortable in his skin, something Lurie said he wants as a head coach. James40
Kelly's staying in Oregon --- Phil Knight's (of NIKE) alma mater. An alumnae financial intervention, perhaps?
Hoping for a Bruce Arians hire --- mature, composed, NOT stubborn, can adapt... yobill626
Les makes a great point that I hadn't thought about before. This makes the 2nd year in a row that Kelly thumbed his nose at the NFL. I'll bet dollars to donuts that Knight/Nike paid a nice little retainer, I mean bonus, er....I mean bribe to keep Kelly at the school. Nobody walks away from that kind of NFL payday without a nice soft place to land, padded with stacks of $100 bills 3 stories high. Second, and I think this is a biggie. Neither the Browns nor the Eagles have the players in place for Kelly to come aboard and put on HIS kind of show. If it had been the Redskins looking for a coach and RG III was coming out, you'd have to bet the whole casino he'd of taken that job and never looked back. Mark1npt
