Chip Calls an Audible: New Deal for Vick

POSTED: Monday, February 11, 2013, 12:40 PM

A couple hours before the first Chip Kelly press availability since the Senior Bowl, the Eagles made a surprise announcement: they've agreed with Michael Vick on a restructured contract, which reports indicate will be for about $10 million over one year.

What does this mean? Well, it means nothing good for Nick Foles, first of all. Vick has said he is not amenable to staying here as a backup. The Chipper, after reviewing 2012 film, must think a 33-year-old Vick is a better option for his offense than Foles, the bigger, slower-footed 2012 rookie. He must also think he isn't getting his longterm franchise QB out of the 2013 draft. So he's going to try to buy a year with Vick, see how it goes, and if disaster ensues, as it did for Andy Reid the past two seasons with Vick, then there's the 2014 draft and a more promising quarterback crop.

If you're a Vick fan, this validates your view that a terrible offensive line was the QB's main problem last season. If you're a Vick basher, it's easy to see how you might want to grind your teeth to dust, watching Kelly have to repeat Reid's mistakes instead of learning from them.

Kelly obviously will get quite a few questions on this matter at his 1:30 press conference. Among them will be how a two-turnover-a-game quarterback who hasn't played a full, 16-game season since 2006 is going to represent a step forward in rebuilding.

Of course, this contract doesn't mean Vick absolutely is the Eagles' 2013 starter, and I'm sure that will be emphasized today. But the odds just went from near nothing to overwhelmingly in Vick's favor. It's fair to say this is not the clean, fresh start a lot of fans were envisioning.

smith was beat out due to injury smith had the 49ers at like 6-2 or something like that when he suffered the concusion. smith took them to the nfc championship the previous year. kaepernic didnt take them to the superbowl alone and oh yeah who won the superbowl a pocket passer joe flaco and if not for the black again the score wouldnt have been that close...

Behind Door Number One, the Sixers. Kwame Brown, Royal Ivey, Evan Turner, two guys with shot knees that cost them multiple #1 picks, and a coach who employs strange rotations, generally ignores youth, and seems to grind on his players something fierce. And just for emphasis: Kwame Fricking Brown.

Behind Door Number Two, the Phillies. Delmon Young, John Lannan, no corner outfielders, four iron gloves in the lineup, nobody who works a walk, virtually no youth, Chooch suspended for cheating, Ruin Tomorrow Jr. and his BS, and Monty and the Teflonics. Oh yeah, and Wheeler and Sarge.

Behind Door Number Three, the Eagles. Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman, college coach with gimmicky offense, Cleveland's coordinators, ticket price increase, and the gift that just keeps on giving, the injury prone, height challenged turnover machine formerly known as Ron Mexico.
More than ever, we're talking the Gold Standard.

Remaining a Philadelphia sports fan has never been more a test of character than at the present time.

Good old defroe. I told you Vick would be back. Now you, jim35, atb, 1000hugs can all go cheer for the cowboys or giants. You state that a pocket qb won. Did you see all the breakdown errors the 49ers defense had? Guess not. It takes a team to win buddy. The game is changing whether you like it or not. I guarantee you with in the next 5 year, Kaep, Wilson, and RG3 are going to be the best qbs in the league. Chew on that. Kelly is a great coach. He has vision. He was able to see what you other idiots couldn't.

Another media site quotes Kelly on Vick... "He's got an unbelievable release, and it's our job as coaches to make sure he can get the ball out quickly."
Apparently the film Chipper reviewed had no time stamp on it.
That or he's got A.R.S. (andy reid syndrome- that ego-exacerbated coaching affliction whose victims suffer delusions regarding their ability to save lost souls and/or make plays from the sidelines).

Lets review....Hire 21 no name coaches with bad records (check), resign a turnover machine that can't read a defense, has lost a step, and can't score in the red zone (check), alienate 90% of the fan base with a single signing (check), use up all your good will and be the #1 target for the Philly hate after 3 weeks on the job (check)....did I miss anything?

Roseman actually thought this would be a good idea? most knowledgeable fans realize what a terrible sign for Chump Kelly this is.....my hopes are now gone for this guy....utter, utter devastation in one move.....Chump Kelly....we hardly knew you....
