Chip Calls an Audible: New Deal for Vick
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
A couple hours before the first Chip Kelly press availability since the Senior Bowl, the Eagles made a surprise announcement: they've agreed with Michael Vick on a restructured contract, which reports indicate will be for about $10 million over one year.
What does this mean? Well, it means nothing good for Nick Foles, first of all. Vick has said he is not amenable to staying here as a backup. The Chipper, after reviewing 2012 film, must think a 33-year-old Vick is a better option for his offense than Foles, the bigger, slower-footed 2012 rookie. He must also think he isn't getting his longterm franchise QB out of the 2013 draft. So he's going to try to buy a year with Vick, see how it goes, and if disaster ensues, as it did for Andy Reid the past two seasons with Vick, then there's the 2014 draft and a more promising quarterback crop.
If you're a Vick fan, this validates your view that a terrible offensive line was the QB's main problem last season. If you're a Vick basher, it's easy to see how you might want to grind your teeth to dust, watching Kelly have to repeat Reid's mistakes instead of learning from them.
Kelly obviously will get quite a few questions on this matter at his 1:30 press conference. Among them will be how a two-turnover-a-game quarterback who hasn't played a full, 16-game season since 2006 is going to represent a step forward in rebuilding.
Of course, this contract doesn't mean Vick absolutely is the Eagles' 2013 starter, and I'm sure that will be emphasized today. But the odds just went from near nothing to overwhelmingly in Vick's favor. It's fair to say this is not the clean, fresh start a lot of fans were envisioning.
Vicks problem was holding on to the ball too long behind a line that could not defend him. Maybe Chip's no-excuse-for-not-being-quick offense is just what Vick needs to succeed. Richard Saunders
Alex Smith? Matt Flynn? I wish you guys could see the big picture. If Vick can actually play well, we win. If he fails, he will fail big and we will have a top 5 pick in a MUCH better QB Draft next year. When Vick wins, he wins big. When he fails, he goes down in flames. So either way, it's a win for us. Relax. regassert6- When Vick wins he wins big? 2 playoff wins in a decade. That's not even winning small, that's winning nothing. He can't play.
Sidewinder7 - In some people's minds, Vick can never do wrong, even though he is a failed QB and now that he's losing his legs, he can't even get out of his own way. I'm telling you, this is not a Kelly decision. This decision was made for Kelly by the Lurie/Roseman "partnership". And, by "partner", I think you get my drift.
- Makes sense. A one-year deal for Vick only suggests Kelly suspects Foles isn't the longterm answer, which Eagles fans should view with relief. If we brought in Kelly for his high-speed offense, we should see what it looks like as close to full speed as possible. If Vick proves to be a caretaker for a rookie, at least he's better than Doug Pederson. Wurm

Not on my dime. I'm out. 23 years and I'm done. There will be 3 seats available in section 234 next year for those wanting to waste their money. Enjoy. EndzoneAnimal

"The Eagles fan again think they know more than actual football people."
If you've seen them play any games the past two years this has already been long confirmed. guyguy4
AWFUL MOVE...Jefferey Lurie again shoved Vick down the Eagles fans throats....over 90% of Eagles fans voted here on this site to DUMP VICK...but the rich sissy owner said F YOU to the Eagles fans AGAIN.....can't wait to laugh as the old washed-up Vick FAILS MISERBLY again to another 2-14 awful season.....LOL. jim35
I turned 40 yesterday. I have no faith that I'll ever see the Eagles hoist the Lombardi in my lifetime. Chip Kelly and his gimmicky offense will FAIL. You heard here first.....Is it too much to ask for a traditional QB running a traditional offense with s strong defense and running game? What won the Super Bowl this year? A traditional pocket passer running a traditional offense. MrBigDizzle
Whether you love, hate or are indifferent toward Vick or Foles, the O-line, coupled with the atrocious play-calling, was the biggest problem for both of the Eagles' QBs in 2013.
FIRE ANDY!!!
(Sorry. Force of habit.) mkat33
Foles will be happy to have any job....Remeber, like Kevin Kolb, this was an AR choice as the QB of the future and how is that working out....and if he is so dam good, I guess AR will come back and trade for him......and if he doesn't ....it tells you all you need to know about the kid.......and all of our slow less than talented lineman can out run him so he jsut does not fit here......and we saw he did not have a NFL arm...... nuggett
