Castillo: Focus on Redskins, Not Critics
Les Bowen and Daily News staff
Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo said he has been so regimented with his weekly schedule and focused on the Redskins that he has had no time to worry about public criticism, Castillo sasid today during his weekly news conference.
Castillo told reporters that defense wins championships and the defense needs to help get wins. He said he is disappointed that the team is 1-4.
Castillo said he spent yesterday focused on how to stop the Redskins' run game, not on reports that the team was considering bringing in a defensive consultant. "Coach Reid hasn't talked to me about anything," the first-year coordinator said.
Castillo also said that he knows how to teach and that the second half of the Buffalo game was something the defense can build upon.
He said second-round pick Jaiquawn Jarrett is working with the first team this week at safety, splitting reps with Kurt Coleman. Castillo said he hopes to get Jarrett on the field Sunday on defense. Jarrett has been active for only one game, and got on the field only on special teams that day.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said taking care of the ball "is a conscious mindset" and can be done without compromising aggressiveness.
"Our players are proud men," he said. They want to take care of the football. We'll keep emphasizing it. We'll get better."
He said most of the Eagles offense has been "dynamite," but they can't afford for their bad plays to result in turnovers. Mornhinweg has noted that the Eagles rarely punt, they either score or turn the ball over.
He said that "some crazy things" have happened to Vick on interceptions this season. (One example would be the ball Jason Avant kicked straight into the stomach of the Bills' Nick Barnett while Avant flipped in the air Sunday.) Mornhinweg shied away from the notion that players pressing was what was causing the turnovers.
He said the Redskins defense looks good on film with a "heck of a scheme" and some unique things. He said it will be a big challenge for his offense. He also cited that the Redkins lead the league in third-down defense.
Mornhinweg said first-round pick Danny Watkins will keep getting better at right guard, "every day and every week," and will be "a fine, fine football player."
Watkins, a native of British Columbia, attended the Flyers' 5-4 victory over the Vancouver Canucks Wednesday night and was impressed by the Flyers and the atmosphere, he said.

Special teams coordinator Bobby April said on kickoff returns, "we just haven't done a good job of getting in position to block" for Dion Lewis. In some situations, April hasn't found the right matchups against the other teams' coverage personnel, he said.
April said the Eagles were fortunate not to get called for delay when they hit onside kick to start the second half before the ball was placed in play. He said it was spur of moment decision, with the option always there based on formation. He said the decision was not made in the locker room to come out with an onside kick.
After seeing kicker David Akers two weeks ago, the Eagles will see ex-Birds punter Sav Rocca on Sunday. April said Rocca is a good punter, one of the best around midfield and keeping it inside the 20.
- Lets hope that Rocca gets to punt. I will believe it when I see it.
SUCK FOR LUCK. Juan: please continue to put the players in a better position to NOT make the play. Goal: 1-15.

Comment removed.- Wow, they actually allowed you to speak directly with their coordinators? You must feel like royalty. Juan focusing on the game and ignoring the critics hasn't actually served him well so maybe he should do the opposite and open himself up to taking some suggestions from it. The fact that Andy Reid hasn't spoken to Juan at all about it and how the defense has played speaks volumes..he needs to be fired. Both of them along with Howie Brownoseman.
Buffalo shut it down in the 2nd half. They were determined not to "ROMO" the lead away. They did little to challenge the Eagles in the 2nd half after they jammed the ball down their throats on the first drive.
They took zero chances. They won the game.
The "wide-nine?" Do they call it that because on most plays its really like playing with 9 guys? jhjack
is it castillo's fault he's stuck with a system (wide-nine) for which he doesn't have the personnel (LBs and Ss stink)? when will nickles's lapdog roseman be held accountable for back-to-back terrible drafts, and trading for a guy (DRC) who's indifferent? oliver north
The D is awful. The D-line pins their ears back to try and sack the QB every play, that's fine. But when it is a run play, they canb't stop it, they are already in the backfield. That leaves the linebackers to make the stop..... THEY ARE THE PROBLEM. They are horrendous. They either can't make the tackle or are no where to be found. Then the RB gets to the secondary, and high-priced corners don't want to hit. All they care about are interceptions. It would be stupid to get a D consultant. Everyone knows what the problems are. kozykoz26
If only Juan would work harder and Andy put the players in the correct position, the Eagles problems would be over. I do not know about you but I am taking the points and betting on 1-5. C'mon Juan, don't let me down, baby needs a new pair of shoes. StorminNorman
A well trained coach would know how to tweak it's defense to support the personnel they have in house. I'm not seeing that. PhillyFanSouth
I predict that the Redskins will not run for over 200 yards and pass for over 400 yards. Smaller numbers would run the risk of being surpassed. 4thand10
Lurie/Banner/Reid are always going to be the smartest guys in the room. If they let their defensive leaders walk no problem, if the hire an O line coach as Defensive Coordinator, no problem. Arrogance and contempt will only win the Super Bowl of Carpetbaggers....... Earl J
Mike Shanahan versus Juan Castillo. Anyone recall Mike Tyson versus Marvis Frazier? Will T.- Actually it's Shanahan's son who will be going against Juan. Have you guys ever wondered what the potion coaches are doing? You have a defensive line coach, line backers coach, defensive backs and safety coach what are they teaching? The whole defense doesn't really practice together that much. During the week you are separated by position and usually starters are going up against 2nd and 3rd stringer. The day the whole defense practice they go against a practice squad trying to imitate what the opponent they'll face will likely do that Sunday. I'm wondering what the communication is like with all those position coaches on defense and Juan.
- Hey, poor Juan was made DC and was told he had to run the wide 9. Here are the players you have and here is the master of the wide 9, Washburn, now make it work. I truly doubt Juan had the wide 9 in mind especially since he spent so much time with Jim Johnson and the 4-3. I truly believe Reid is being stubborn because he went out and hired Washburn. Reid should have told Banner and Roseman to get the linebacker from the Titans when they had the chance. Detroit got him at a bargain basement price.
Vick is 1-7 in Eagles last eight games....Vick has SEVEN INTERCEPTIONS...and SEVEN FUMBLES, in the last four games...that's absolutely awful for the $100 million QB Vick. frank105
