Castillo: Focus on Dolphins, not job security
Les Bowen & DN staff
Here are some notes from the coordiantors' weekly press conferences at the NovaCare Complex today:
* Defensive coordinator Juan Castillo said his focus is on the Miami Dolphins and not the potential that he could be fired. Yesterday, coach Andy Reid denied reports that he would need to fire Castillo in order to keep his job. He said that has never been relayed to him. Castillo said he thinks the defensive players believe in what they are doing.
"You work hard. You do things the right way, you do it with class, you treat people the right way, you outwork people," Castillo said. "As a coach, you get your players to outwork your opponent ... Good things always happen. I believe this. All my life, it's happened that way. You have to believe that, because we've been here before, in this position. Fundamentally, that's your foundation."
* Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said DeSean Jackson has grown as a professional - he works hard, prepares well. He conceded he had "some things going on," presumably that is a reference to the contract situation. The coordinator also said he is "absolutely" satisfied with Jackson's effort over the last few weeks.
* Mornhinweg said the Eagles rank high in all offensive categories that are not "directly correlated with turnovers" and turnovers are the biggest factor in wins and losses.
* The issue of Michael Vick's safety was raised with Mornhinweg, who said that the Eagles have emphasized again the need for him to avoid taking unecessary hits. He said Vick needs to slide or go out of bounds for the rest of his career. He said the sliding part is easy, the mentality to slide is tougher. He also did not sound convinced it would happen. "We'll see." Yesterday, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano laughed out loud when it was relayed to him to reporters that Vick said he intends to play safer.
*Mornhinweg said the Dolphins are "hot as a team, hot as a defense." Remember, the Dolphins started 0-7 and go into this game with the same record as the Eagles.
* Castillo said he is optimistic that Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie will play Sunday, would step back into nickel role.
* Castillo said quarterback Matt Moore doing a good job of running Dolphins offense, especially scrambling when necessary.
* Special teams coordinator Bobby April said DRC might return kicks again, although he said the decision would be up to Reid.
* April also lauded the work of Colt Anderson, whose season ended with a torn ACL. He said that newcomer Tom Nelson will fill almost all of Anderson's coverage duties.
I hope Juan focuses on the Dolphins in Fla on Sunday afternoon. The kind at Sea World in Orlando, not in Miami. Will T.
Comment removed.- Ouch!!! How true. Ha ha! Better yet, these guys take 22 hours to do the same thing a Belicheck can do in 8-12 hours. And from a business perspective, these guys need to utlize their strengths and exploit the opponent's weakness. For example, having a multi-million star corner who is good one-on-one, don't make him play zone or giving the most important position in the defense to a rookie who is not tested.
- When have these guys ever done "the same thing" as Belichick?
Perhaps, you meant they "try" to do the same thing as Belichick. - this just illustrates that there are not enough hours in a day to make winners out of this pathetic team.

"you outwork people," Castillo said. "As a coach, you get your players to outwork your opponent ..." Yeah, but your opponent works hard also and, Juan, he's smarter than you. Warhound
Poor Juan, he is so over his head. verve
"Castillo said he thinks the defensive players believe in what they are doing." wow! Dont worry about the Dolphins,,, let sworry about getting a top 5 pick and a new GM to make that pick!
With all this talent who needs a real defensive coordinator 2011- By 'Good things always happen'. Does that mean that it's sometimes good to lose your job?
