Bye Preceded 2008 Game for Eagles, Falcons

POSTED: Monday, October 22, 2012, 10:47 AM

Under Andy Reid, the Eagles have come off their bye to play an opponent that was also coming off its bye once before – and it was the Atlanta Falcons, the same team the Eagles will face this week, in the same situation.

In 2008 the Eagles and Falcons both rested the week of Oct. 19. The Falcons were on their way to an 11-5 season, the Eagles were headed for 9-6-1, but also for a playoff run that would take them to the NFC Championship Game. On Oct. 26, the Eagles won at the Linc, 27-14, with Brian Westbrook running for 167 yards on 22 carries and catching six passes for 42 more yards.

In Atlanta, that game is remembered more for the call ref Jerome Boger’s crew made with two minutes and 22 seconds left. Falcons returner Adam Jennings was ruled to have muffed a Sav Rocca punt, with Akeem Jordan recovering for the Eagles, who led, 20-14. Replays showed there was a good chance Jennings didn’t touch the ball, but the Falcons were out of timeouts, and because more than two minutes remained, they couldn’t challenge. There was no review.

Falcons rookie QB Matt Ryan, from Penn Charter High, threw for a couple of TDs but also was intercepted twice.

Under Reid, who is 13-0 the week following the Eagles’ bye, the team has never faced an undefeated opponent. The Falcons are 6-0 coming off their week of rest, and are being widely hailed as the class of the NFC. The Eagles, who return to the practice field Monday with a new defensive coordinator in Todd Bowles, are 3-3.

Here is a breakdown of the teams Reid has defeated coming out of the bye in his previous 13 seasons, with what each team had done the previous week:

2011: The Eagles defeated Dallas, which was coming off a 34-7 win over the Rams.

2010: The Eagles defeated the Colts, who were coming off a 30-17 Monday Night win over Houston.

2009: The Eagles defeated Tampa Bay, which was coming off a 16-3 loss to Washington.

2008: The Eagles defeated the Falcons, who were coming off their bye.

2007: The Eagles defeated the Jets, who had lost to the Giants, 35-24, the previous week.

2006: The Eagles defeated the Redskins, who had beaten Dallas, 22-19, the week before.

2005: The Eagles defeated the Chargers, who had beaten Oakland, 27-14, the previous week.

2004: The Eagles defeated Carolina, which was coming off a 20-17 loss to Denver.

2003: The Eagles defeated Buffalo, which had lost the week before to Miami, 17-7.

2002: The Eagles defeated Tampa Bay, which had beaten the Browns, 17-3, the previous week.

2001: The Eagles defeated the Giants, who had lost to the Rams, 15-14, the week before.

2000: The Eagles defeated the Bengals, who had beaten the Jaguars, 17-14, the previous week.

1999: The Eagles defeated the Rams, who had defeated the Bears, 34-12, the week before.

The Eagles are NOT a good football team. Seriously, how many mistakes does Reid have to make before being held accountable? I think I'd pay a million bucks just to be able to fire him. I really want a parade when he gets fired because we'll finally have a chance to win. Worst scheme, gameplan Ive ever seen. BRING BACK JUAN.

Eagles are great after the bye, but can they stop a Falcons offense that can do it all? And if they hit the Falcons defense when it's on its game, that's serious trouble too. Reid's perfect record ends. Falcons 27, Eagles 14.

This will be the third consecutive Eagles' opponent that is coming off a bye. Three straight opponents that have had two weeks to prepare for them. Given the clear advantage that the bye week presents, I am really surprised that the NFL would allow that to happen.

It isn't the coaches fault for the turnovers.

Breaking News ....Micheal Vick had no turnovers this past week. Analysts point to the fact that the Eagles did not play......More at Eleven

Any Vick supporters left read MMQB by Peter King...PFF broke down all his turnovers this weekend. On his interceptions he has the TIME to throw yet holds it to long and makes poor choices all at the mature age of 32..w all this talent around him. Any one still supports Reid ..well I just feel sorry for you. After 14 years his window is shut and sealed tight. He cannot take us where we want to go and repeatedly makes the same mistakes.

The Eags lose to Falcons and then the Saints- Then it will be gut check time for everyone from Lurie to the guy that fills the cups with Gatorade on the sideline.....I mean real character building stuff....

I predict 9-7, maybe 10-6 but either way, making it or missing playoffs but the slightest of margins. I think the D is decent to keep us in games and offense will slow down on the turnovers. Reid is good when everything is against him, just watch. On a side note, if Vick happens to get hurt and Foles has to play then we can get an early start on a new era. All good with me for this season anyway.

Please take boy wonder GM with you on your way out AR. last few drafts are pretty poor. Thank god we drafted V curry w our 2nd rd pick I mean we def needed a 12th D lineman. I mean we did not have any lack of depth in secondary or O line...

BENCH DANNY WATKINS - Move Demetress Bell to Right Tackle, Heremans to Right Guard. King Dunlap Left Tackle.

TRADE (release) DION LEWIS - you can get a 7th round pick for him (22 years old, fresh legs). Open the roster spot for a third Tight End. Totally ridiculous that this team dresses only two tight ends. They run more two tight end sets than any team in the league. Bryce Brown is your backup RB. Polk should stay because he backs up the FB ad RB.

TWO BACK SETS - Bryce Brown and McCoy at the same time. Occasionally shift McCoy to some slot formations. He runs a 4.3, and Avant runs a 4.6. Turn him loose.

Just looked up a disturbing statistic. The only team to have scored fewer points than the Eagles are the Jaguars. Hope the bye week results in the offense waking up.

Hasn't everyone seen enough already? The Tonner knows he has. Time for a change even if it's just for change's sake. It's not personal, Andy, just business. The Tonner would like to go to a football parade down Broad Street before the coroner puts a toe tag on him. So Jeffy, time to cut the apron strings and step out on that limb. And the Tonner means clean house. AR, MM, the mailroom flunkie, everyone.
