Breaking down the Eagles' roster

POSTED: Sunday, June 14, 2009, 11:17 AM

The Eagles have finished up their offseason OTAs and will not reconvene until the July 26 start of training camp at Lehigh.

The roster stands at 80 players and the Eagles will have some decisions to make come cutdown time, although they also will have information from training camp and preseason games to make those calls.

NFL teams needs to be at 75 players by Sept. 1 and then down to 53 by Sept. 5. The Eagles open Sept. 13 against Carolina.

Here is how the 80-man roster breaks down right now:

Wide receiver (11): Danny Amendola, Jason Avant, Hank Baskett, Reggie Brown, Kevin Curtis, Brandon Gibson, DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Shaheer McBride, Brandon Robinson, Marcus Thigpen.

Offensive line (15): Shawn Andrews, Stacy Andrews, Nick Cole, King Dunlap, Paul Fanaika, Mike Gibson, Todd Herremans, Jamal Jackson, Max-Jean Gilles, Winston Justice, Mike McGlynn, Chris Patrick, Jason Peters, Dallas Reynolds, Fenuki Tupou.

Tight end (4): Eugene Bright, Brent Celek, Cornelius Ingram, Matt Schobel.

Running back (4): Lorenzo Booker, Eldra Buckley, LeSean McCoy, Brian Westbrook.

Fullback (3): Kyle Eckel, Marcus Maileli, Leonard Weaver.

Quarterback (3): A.J. Feeley, Kevin Kolb, Donovan McNabb.

Defensive end (7): Victor Abiamiri, Chris Clemons, Trent Cole, Josh Gaines, Darren Howard, Juqua Parker, Bryan Smith.

Defensive tackle (5): Brodrick Bunkley, Jervonte Jackson, Dan Klecko, Trevor Laws, Mike Patterson.

Linebacker (9): Stewart Bradley, Tank Daniels, Moise Fokou, Omar Gaither, Chris Gocong, Charleston Hughes, Akeem Jordan, Joe Mays, Tracy White.

Cornerback (9): Sheldon Brown, Joselio Hanson, Macho Harris, Ellis Hobbs, Jack Ikegwounu, Dimitri Patterson, Courtney Robinson, Asante Samuel, Trae Williams.

Safety (6): Rashad Baker, Quintin Demps, Sean Jones, Reshard Langford, Quintin Mikell, Byron Parker.

Kicker (1): David Akers.

Long snapper (1): Jon Dorenbos.

Punter (2): Ken Parrish, Sav Rocca.

And just to clarify the point after reading some of the comments below, there is a long way to go before the Eagles have to come up with a final roster and they could potentially add players between now and then. The idea here was to give you a sense of what they have to work with as they try to craft the 53-man roster, where they have depth and where they don't appear to. Believe us, there will be plenty of analysis to come, including an entire special section devoted to training camp.

A lot of attention has been given to all sorts of rankings. Rick Gosselin, the highly respected football writer for the Dallas Morning News, listed his offseason rankings today. He has the Eagles third behind New England and the New York Giants. Here is what he said about the Eagles:

The Eagles have won an NFC-high 92 games this decade on the broad shoulders of Donovan McNabb, who went to his only Super Bowl with Terrell Owens. Other than that season, McNabb has been throwing to a cast of no-names this decade. We've all wondered how good McNabb could be if he had some legitimate weapons on the flank. Eagles coach Andy Reid has finally decided to find out, using premium draft choices on speedy WRs DeSean Jackson in '08 and Jeremy Maclin in '09.  Final '08 ranking: 12

Any chance they keep two fullbacks if they plan on giving Weaver a lot of carries at tailback?

    1) You didn't really "breakdown" the roster. You listed the players. Anybody can check the roster on the eagles website. 2) You put the players in alphabetical order for each position EXCEPT quarterback. Why the deviation?

I agree with BroadcastingWisdom. Anybody could have done this. How about some insight as to how many they will keep at each position, who stays and who goes.

Agreed this is pretty boring. I live in DC and they printed a projected 53 man roster weeks ago in the Post or Times. And good point about the QB, BroadW.

Les and Paul need to go... I can bring more to the table than copying a roster and posting it. Do you get paid for this?

ya why weren't the players listed by starters to reserves? I could have gone to the Eagles website for that useless info. A "breakdown" would evaluate each players viability to "make" the final roster......guess I will have to listen to Colin Cowherd or John Clayton for a "Breakdown" "LK"

In fairness, Rocca was listed before Parrish. Besides, I found no spelling errors and the parenthetical position counts were a nice touch. You guys go take a load off while the Pulitzer committee sifts through this one.
