Eagles assistant secondary coach Otis Smith is no longer with the team, an Eagles spokesman confirmed Wednesday.Otis, no longer their main man

No further information was offered. Smith, a 13-year NFL cornerback who played for the Birds early in his career, joined the coaching staff as an intern in 2007 and was promoted in 2008. He worked under secondary coach Sean McDermott, who currently is running the defense while coordinator Jim Johnson takes a leave of absence during his cancer treatment.

The Eagles recently brought in former Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart to assist McDermott, mainly with the secondary. It's unclear whether that move had anything to do with Smith's departure. Smith worked all of the OTAs, or minicamps, this spring.

The move came to light in a roundabout way. It's a big old goofy internet world out there, as this story illustratres. Derek Sarley of Igglesblog e-mailed your Eagletarian, saying that one of his readers, a salary cap maven named "shlynch" had noticed Smith is no longer listed among the Eagles' coaches on the team Web site, and that a story on that Web site listed former Birds on the current coaching staff, and did not mention Smith. (Sometimes it really is kinda like "Pravda," the nickname bestowed by cynical fans.)

Anyhow, the Eagles acknowledged Smith is gone. Thanks to Derek and to "shlynch."

Sometimes these blogs are helpful. I think Stewart's addition forced him out. Shame liked to have kept him around for consistency.

I think Izell Jenkins would be best to fill this vacancy.

Now I've seen everything: Fire the owner of the team (Lurie)! Good luck firing the owner! "HOW DARE THEY LET OTIS SMITH LEAVE!" What if Otis Smith WANTED to leave, they're supposed to rope him down, and hog-tie him to the organization? The Eagles have had more consistency in their coaching staff than any other team in the NFL. And they've won 0 super bowls. So the people who think everything the team does is bad should now be happy that we have a new D coordinator, a new secondary coach, a new special teams coordinator and a new quality control coach. But I won't bet on that. These are the same people who cried when mommy served meals they didn't like, and one day rooted for the Eagles to draft Ricky Williams.

Just like the Eagles to make a move under a shroud of secrecy. They think they are running the CIA or something !

Hey Monty wait until this secondary that is now being coached by a guy who hasn't played at the pro level get burned due to stupid blown assignments. You and he will wish they had an ex-pro around to help with how to deal with that DURING a game.

Umm nphillyguy, think we might be reaching just a bit? Neither Steve Spagnuolo or Jon Harbaugh ever played pro ball and things have worked out pretty well for them. Also Ticow021 get 3 points for using a humerous Izell Jenkins reference...

Just because the team made no announcement concerning this, some people read conspiracy and self-motivation into it. Get a GRIP people! The reason they didn't call a news conference is because it just isn't news-worthy.

Les BowenLes Bowen has covered the Eagles for the Daily News since 2002. Before that, he spent nearly 13 years covering the Flyers. It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent. He, his wife Barbara, and their two sons live in Haddon Township, New Jersey.
