Birds' O-Linemen Headed for Stoutland

Did the Eagles make the right move in selecting Billy Davis as defensive coordinator?
Yes.
No.
Who knows? We’ll find out starting with the opener.

Turns out it wasn't the Eagles' new defensive coordinator who was waiting for national signing day to pass before announcing his was leaving college for the NFL. It was the new offensive line coach.

In what looks like the biggest coup new head coach Chip Kelly has managed, the Eagles are expected to name Alabama offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland to run their unit. A league source said the hiring, reported by Footballscoop.com, "is likely to happen."

Stoutland, 50, had the best offensive line in college football last season, for the national champion Crimson Tide. He coached there two seasons, coming from Miami, where he has been among those implicated in the scandal involving booster Nevin Shapiro. A recent Palm Beach Post story said Stoutland is cooperating with NCAA investigators.

Stoutland's 2012 Alabama line featured Chance Warmack, a guard who could be among the top half-dozen or so draft prospects, Rimington Trophy winner Barrett Jones and tackle D.J. Fluker, who also could be a first-round draft pick this April.

Previously Thursday, a league source confirmed former Browns linebackers coach Bill Davis will become the Eagles' defensive coordinator.

Well, no seeming slam dunks on the staff, not that it matters. Successful coordinators and coaches often come from less than stellar backgrounds, and those with great track records often fail in new settings (Mudd, Wash). The success of the new staff will likely be infdluenced more by the leadership and abilities of Kelly/Roseman than the other way around.

I like this hire. I'm not a fan of light O-lineman. Bama won on the front lines by size, strength and athletic ability. I'd love that approach on the Eagles.

EagleEye...great post. Stoutland has a good pedigree. The Alabama o-line was excellent under his tutelage. I have a good feeling about the way Ole' Chipper is moving the birds.

Hawaii Guy, Shame on you. You have not been reading my posts at all. I'm very disappointed. I've never once criticized the recent hires of Chipper and Marilyn McCoo (you need to re-read my posts). To the contrary, my point is that years of terrible decisions (did you forget my Jaiquan Jarrett and Daniel Teo Neshim examples) made by the incompetent Eagle management (primarily Fat Andy and Billionaire Jeff) have left Chipper and Marilyn McCoo with absolutely NOTHING to work with and that it will take MANY, MANY, YEARS for this team to be a SB caliber team.

O goody a DC from one of the worst teams in the NFL and a college coach embroiled in a scandal at the Miami U, at least coming from Alabama, he has experience coaching highly paid players

So you have information that the University of Alabama pays it's football players? You need to report that to the NCAA or Alabama compliance. If not, maybe the Eagles need to bring the daily attitude of excellence like they do in Tuscaloosa. But I guess if the Eagles won the Super Bowl that would limit your snark and sarcasm, which you appear to enjoy more than championships. The constant stream of negativity from Eagles fans is unbelievable.

I really think fans are fine with younger unproven guys getting a shot or even guys getting promoting from position coaches to coord etc. Its the hiring of Shurmur and Davis that are hard to digest when there is evidence of a questionable resume. That is all this is, nobody knows how it will pan out. I agree with Eagle Eye, great point when you spin that thinking in reverse. Perfect example is Spags also. Plenty of speculating just mostly negative with the Browns guys. I think fans wanted a niners or ravens guy in that spot (even the Georgia guy) so after Shurmur it seemed even more head scratching per Davis' past.

Joe Banner just announced the Browns were never interested in hiring Stoutland as their o-line coach.

Good hire...looks like we will use the #4 pick in draft on an offensive lineman which is the right choice.
