Birds' Kelce: Would Love Reunion with Kelly

POSTED: Wednesday, January 9, 2013, 9:54 PM

Is Brian Kelly a good fit for the Eagles?
Yes.
No.

Eagles center Jason Kelce played three years for Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly, when Kelly coached the Cincinnati Bearcats. Wednesday night, after a league source said the Eagles had interviewed Kelly on Tuesday for their head coaching vacancy, Kelce called Kelly “an outstanding coach who manages his college teams very similarly to NFL organizations.”

“I would be extremely excited to play for him again, and he is a proven winner,” Kelce said.

One pattern from the Eagles’ coaching search doesn’t require Sherlock Holmes to deduce – they really like the college guys. Coming into this week, their two longest interviews were withOregon's Chip Kelly and with Penn State coach Bill O’Brien, who ultimately decided to stay in college. The Birds scheduled an interview last weekend with Syracuse coach Doug Marrone, but he agreed to coach the Bills before they could meet.

Kelce, I like you as a player but SHUT your trap. We need coaches that'll know what they're doing not an overwhelmed fool.

Every year several college coaches use nfl teams to get a raise. I'm pissed off that the eagles are dumb enough to be used twice already by chip kelly and bill obrien and now they are going to allow another kelly to do the same thing. And this kelly doesn't even have the resume that should put him in the nfl. He spent most of his career at division 2 grand valley state! Give me a break. When this process started I had a lot of faith in Jeff Lurie after his presser in which he announced the reid firing but that faith is really wavering at this point. I dont see a "defined list of candidates" as Jeff promised. I see a team interviewing anyone that is willing to sit down and talk. And why have we not even kicked the tires on Jon Gruden? It's appalling.

I agree. Jon Gruden wants to coach and he wants to coach for the Eagles and we have the Three Blind Mice conducting the search.

Does anyone remember the last Eagles coach from Notre Dame? Can you say Joe Kuharich? This is the guy who traded Sonny Jurgensn and Tommy McDonald. The Eagles suffered for YEARS because of this guy.

the stress of coaching in the SEC almost killed him so he took some time off and then decided to land at a lesser conference. I can't see him getting into the meat grinder of the NFL. He might have a heart-attack before the end of preseason.

Jason Kelce is a proven loser in the NFL. He played a whole 1 year for a medciore 8-8 team, and then injured his ACL 2 games later. Wow. Proven track record right there. And now that Howard Mudd is retiring hes not going to fit the scheme anymore, and almost no other team is looking for "Mudders" either. He will be lucky to be a backup within 3 years if he is even still on a roster. Horribly over-rated player that can join Andy in Kansas City where I am sure the fans are "amazing". (Where they cheered thier Quarterback getting injured...our fans put up a sign peacefully and get confronted for it) Please sit on the bench Jason and get more then 1 year of NFL experience before talking like a 10 year vet and critisizing fans for something you have been around for a whole 1 year.

He had a very good rookie season then got hurt his second year. Yes he seems to talk alot to the media about his opinion on this but isn't that what fans want? You have guys like Reid and McNabb up there spouting slogans and meaningless drivel. Kelly was prob asked his opinion and gave it.

How do you know he had a very good rookie season ? Because pro-football focus said so ? They rated the Eagles having the #1 line despite a mediocre 8-8 record. The reason why is because it was all propped up by Jason Peters 27. Take him out and the line becomes very medciore. And they are just looking at how many gys you got in front of and blocked, as in a smaller quicker 0-linemen will get good grades there but do TERRIBLE against a big physical defense such as top 5 Miami where he did HORRIBLE. Shady had an amazing 17 carries for 27 yards or something, 1 yard a carry. Kelce got MANHANDLED by 340 pound Paul Solai the ENTIRE GAME. IT WAS PATHETIC. He had an OK year for a 5th round rookie, thats it. Some good and some very bad. And the where was he year #2 ? NOT EVEN ABLE TO PLAY BECAUSE HE BLEW OUT HIS ACL. Not surprisingly again while he was going up against a huge 330 ound DT in Haloti Ngata. Most over-rated guy on the team right now probably. He will not be good NFL starter for more then 2 years, and may even be out of the league if he doesnt recover AMAZINGLY from his ACL.

Another genius with the football IQ of a flea. Dopey, many times the talent on a team trumps how good a coach is. Only one coach in Div 1 wins the National Championship so I guess all the others are worthless? You should really stop commenting on things you know very little about, could make you sound stupid. Oh wait too late

...who cares how many people they interview or if college coaches are using the process to get a raise? What does that matter in the long run? The GM, owner and people making the decision may pick up an idea during the interview...and, maybe they're waiting for their real choice to become available. The day they announce who the new HC is...that's what matters...keep interviewing...

Yeah, how stupid can Kelce be to get injured? He and RG3 should just go sit on the bench and shut up. The nerve of them to get hurt. And yeah, Philly fans would NEVER NEVER NEVER cheer someone getting injured. That has NEVER happened.

    Are you daft?

Kelly had about 1/3 the talent on Notre Dame that Saban had on Alabama so it only stands to reason that he'd lose 42-14. The guy is a great coach,I don't know why everyone is picking this guy to ridicule.

OK, I'm having problems understanding why interviewing Brian Kelly is a bad thing. You don't know about a guy until you talk to him. And now that the Eagles have talked to him, other NFL teams will spend the time and reach out to him, possibly giving the Eagles some time to get comfortable with their real target. Ever think of that?

beegal, it isn't. I guess the complainers would rather just have Lurie jump at the first coach they interview rather than take their time and talk to as many qualified coaches as possible. Not sure what the hurry is. Even if they have an asst. coach on a playoff team targeted they can't announce a hiring for maybe 3 more weeks. Can you imagine the angst by then? To me it's comical reading some of these posts. It's like kids just before Christmas. No patience.

What a moron convention. Typical mental midgets who look at the one game as a measuring stick of a coaches ability. I guess it doesn’t matter that Alabama is a much better team, don't care who the other coach is. Arizona beat New England in New England. What a terrible coach that Belicheck is. But hey keep making those idiot comments; I’m sure it helps you feel better about your own miserable existence. Dopes

Lets calm down on Chucky. He inherited the SB team from Dungy and played teams that choked and collapsed in title game (infamous last gane at the Vet debacle) and SB (Raiders - one of the weakest SB teams ever) Other than that he did nothing but annoy us on MNF

Do Eagles fans who want Jon Gruden realize that he runs the same west coast offense as Andy Reid??? Gruden doesn't believe in running the ball either. The truth is Eagles fans just want a big name, period. But the best coaches usually are not big names when they arrive with new teams. Belicheck was not a "genius" when he arrived in NE. Outsiders called Tom Coughlin washed up until they beat the Patriots. Mike Tomlin was a secondary coach I believe, when he was hired. Soory folks, but the Eagles would be fools to hire a coach just to please the fan base. I don't care what the talking heads say on TV or the radio.

The journey is tiring and every time I think you have reached the bottom of the stupid-well you take ou a shovel and keep digging. Maybe take an elevator, it would save us all some time. Now it's Kelce's fault he got hurt? Guess that Raven who hit him low had nothing to do with it? Guess that dang RG3 was a wasted pick then too. Skins should have known he was going to get hurt. Adrian Petrson should hang them up too. And Peters propped up 4 other guys? Is that the same Peters you said the Eagles never should have traded for? Funny how YOU always use one game to prove Kelce is no good yet ignore all the evidence to the contrary. Now THAT is pathetic.

lol, uhh I couldnt even read all that. Thats not good. I mean I know what it says I just skimmed through it in 5 seconds becaue I have seen it already like 45 times. As for as those ratings they dont account for 1. injuries and 2. size. Thats how they can rate a teams 0-line that went 8-8 and was OK as #1. When they get injured or go up against bigger defensive lines they are not the #1 offensive line in the league and it shows lol...the low fan IQ is really amazing sometimes. Kelce was MASSIVELY OVER-RATED by some after only one season and it showed in his second season, NOT EVEN BEING ABLE TO PLAY MORE THEN 1 GAME. 2011 EAGLES DREAM TEAM STILL KOOL-AID STRONG IN 2013.
