Baskett surprised by release

POSTED: Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 6:25 PM

Hank Baskett began the season as an Eagle for the second time. Now he is a Viking for the second time.

Baskett was cut by the Eagles on Tuesday when the team signed running back Joique Bell off Buffalo's practice squad. He signed with the Vikings and was on the field for practice today.

Baskett signed with the Vikings in 2006 as an undrafted free agent and then was traded to the Eagles for Billy McMullen.

"It definitely caught me off guard," he told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "But it’s the NFL. It’s the life we choose. Stranger things have happened. In my career I’ve had some pretty strange things happen ... Welcome back to Minnesota. It was a short stay but I’m excited to have the opportunity to come back."

Baskett will be a teammate of Brett Favre now, meaning he has played with Peyton Manning, Donovan McNabb and Favre.

"My brother actually joked with me about that. He said I was just teasing you a couple of years ago when I said you get to play with some of the greats. Now you’re kind of pushing the limits. It’s awesome because you get to learn from these guys. They’re great and they’ve been around a long time. I get to say that I’ve played with guys who are forever going to change the record books."

Baskett said he needs to earn Favre's trust quickly, but said he feels like he can step in with the offense being similar to what he is used to.

"If I walk in right now and he tells me he trusts me, I want it that fast," Baskett said. "But I know it takes time. It’s either put up or shut up. I need to come out here and perform and get his confidence. It’s not going to be given. I’m willing to work to get his confidence. That’s what I’m here to do."

Baskett will be looking to fill the void left by the injury to Sidney Rice and give the Vikings a big receiver.

Revolving door NFL jobs with top-notch QBs, Playmate chick, millions, and all despite no discernible skills whatsoever. Hank Baskett must have done something amazing in a past life. Like build an arc or free the slaves

I know everyone hates on Baskett, but he was still 5 times better than McMullen. Baskett gave us some glimses of potential, like his 3 TD receptions of 85 yards or more, but never progressed. If it wasnt' for his special teams play, he probably would be out of the NFL by now.

Time to bring Chad Hall off the practice squad and use him in a Wes Welker fashion. I'm sure that's part of Andy's plan, but he's waiting for just the right time when he can outsmart nobody, but himself.
