Baskett re-signs with Birds

POSTED: Thursday, April 23, 2009, 4:04 PM

Much of the news this offseason regarding Hank Baskett has been related to his impending nuptials with former Playboy Playmate Kendra Wilkinson. From the reality TV show to the size of the ring to sales of her stripper pole.

Now, here is some football news about Baskett.

The Eagles re-signed the restricted free-agent to the 1-year tender offered by the team. The Eagles had extended the tender previously, but Baskett had not signed it.

Baskett and offensive lineman Nick Cole were tendered at the so-called midlevel, which would have required any other team making them an offer to give the Eagles a second-round draft pick if the Birds declined to match the offer. Like Cole, Baskett will make $1.545 million and will be a free agent in 2010 if he does not have a new deal.

Because Cole and Baskett entered the NFL undrafted in 2006, the Eagles had to tender them at least at the midlevel to assure compensation if they signed elsewhere; low-tender compensation is a pick in the round in which the player was drafted.

Baskett set career highs in 2008 with 33 receptions and three touchdowns, adding 440 yards. He has posted 71 catches, 1,046 yards and six touchdowns in his 3-year career in Philadelphia. He is one of six players in NFL history to have three catches of 85 yards-or-more in a career.

The team also announced the signing of tight end Eugene Bright, a Harriton High graduate. Bright (6-4, 254) played defensive end at Purdue, compiling 48 tackles and 7.5 sacks in his 4-year career. He was undrafted in 2008 and was not on an NFL roster last season. Coach Andy Reid's older sons, Garrett and Britt, also attended Harriton High.

Who needs Tony G when you can get an undrafted DE from your sons high school?

Why does this team continue to waste money on mediocre players...A second rounder for Gonzalez is a bit steep, that said, a first rounder for Boldin would be great value.

It's the Tin Stantard here at Eagle land. Celek at TE, were fine there so says the rotund one.....plus we have one of the loser sons school mates who is a DE? Oh that's right andy can make a TE out of a DE. Looky at what he did with Kleko....that really worked out...

Stop whinning about the team spending 1.5 million on a player that's been decent last year and bringing in a big body for camp. Even if they draft a TE high in the draft, they need a bit of depth. As of this morning, Matt Schobel(spelling?) was the only other TE on the roster. Now they have someone else and can get rid of Matt if they want. This wasn't a huge signing by any means and that's why it was only a blip on the side of the team page- don't fool yourselves into thinking Andy Reid is tossing around high fives today at the Novacare center about this. There is a lot more to running a team than signing huge names.
