Banner talks "gap" between Eagles and Cowboys

POSTED: Tuesday, February 9, 2010, 11:39 AM

Eagles president Joe Banner called this past season "a mixed bag" during an interview with the team Web site and said it was "very disappointing and frustrating" to go another season without a championship.

He also acknowledged "there is a gap there" between the Eagles and the Cowboys based on the Birds' losses in the regular-season finale and the playoffs. However, he cautioned the gap might not be dramatic as it appears, just as he said the gap was not as large as it seemed when the Eagles beat the Cowboys, 44-6, in the regular-season finale in 2008.

Asked to evaluate the season, Banner said, "It’s difficult to make the playoffs, sustain the level of injuries we did, see the team play as hard as we did and not feel some satisfaction in that. At the same time, we are singular-minded in this goal we have. There is only one thing to focus on and achieve and we certainly haven’t reached that goal another year. That’s very frustrating, and disappointing. We have got to go back and look at what we can do and try to figure out how we can get back."

As for the Cowboys, he said, "The truth is, when you lose that solidly, and Andy says this and people think he’s not really giving them a lot of information, but I think this says everything, they must have beat you in a lot of different phases. Whether they are talking about the caliber of play, the scheme they used, who showed up that day or how healthy they stayed or all of the above. When you lose 20-17, it could have been the bounce of the ball or somebody having a good day that day. When you lose that soundly twice in the span of six days, then you have to look at all of the aspects that go into the game and objectively evaluate what areas you need to upgrade to be able to change the outcome of the game … I don’t think the difference is as dramatic as one may think just looking at the scores of those two games but there is a gap there. We have to figure out how to close that gap and be ready to go next year.

Banner said he expected the NFC East to be the toughest division in football next season, which he said was a good thing because the players realize the team is not going anywhere without winning the division.

So much changes from season to season in the NFL I wouldn't make too much out of this supposed gap.

Joe loves to spin. He will realize that trading Donovan and going with Kolb allows him to spin a tale of a "young, talented, up-and-coming team" for the next few years. He can say Kolb-DeSean-Maclin-McCoy-Celek can rise up together like Utley-Howard-Rollins-Hamels did.

Yea, a mixed bag of sh**. What seperates the Birds and Boys is FS and OL. Positions that Banner let his ego get in the way of putting the best team on the field. He is no longer just classless, he is also now clueless in making football PERSONNEL decisions.

For some reason, watching the Saints win the Super Bowl gave me the feeling that the Eagles will never do it. Certainly not with a combo of Reid, McNabb, and Westbrook. You gotta at least change two of the three, and we all know Andy isn't going anywhere...

Poor safety play, no pass rush and a weak group of linebackers = 2 losses to the Cowboys, they have a good TE and solid receivers so you cannot double TE, they also have a QB who makes good throws when not under pressure. We need to drastically fix one area and we will be back.

We need a pass rushing DE! this will help the safety and corner back problems. The eagles are giving qb's too much time to throw the ball. We should pay sheldon some more money as he is a number 1 CB, but we need another as asante is not a number 1.

I quite honestly believe the reason they brought Jauron in is to fill in for McDermott if and when he fails. For everyone that wants to fault McNabb, it's the defense today that's holding back this team. The scheme doesn't work, and there isn't enough talent. We need size and talent on the defense, flat out.

there is not an issue with the "status quo" if your team's status quo leads to you being the best in your division and advancing deep into the playoffs soo consistently... now that that dynamic has changed, it seems to me that Andy and Joe have actually seen that and so they are changing.. .shaking up the coaching staff, drafting for big offense.. just because they didn't dump money on a flashy receiver doesn't mean they didn't do the right thing or make the right choice... and the gap between Payton and Reid?? lets see the Saints continue for the next decade near the top of the conference, and then that becomes a valid point.. yes this year Payton was fresh and therefore effective.. but lets see a length of time...

They need to move up in the draft, whether through trades of picks or players and pick the best free safety in the draft, and then sign Julius Peppers for however much it takes to get him here before Dallas does it! And then, like they picked basically offensive players in the last draft, make it defense, defense defense!! Some new linebackers and/or cornerbacks would not hurt, either. The Eagles' defense was feared by the league when Jim Johnson ran it, they need to take it back to that to win anything!I totally agree with beegal99!!

What soo many people fail to realize is that we have become soo spoiled by being consistent winners (albeit without a championship), that anything short of a Superbowl is a complete and utter failure and should be blown up... Da Birds are one of less than a handful of teams that are always in contention near the top.. most teams in this leagues don't even make it to the playoffs, and yet you want to scour those teams for the talent that you believe will bring us to the promised land? rethink your logic

Who cares about the opinions of Bernard Hopkins on football? Last time I checked, he's a boxer, not a football player. The Cowboys were a bad match-up for us....period. Just like the season before, we thumped them at the end of the season. There is no "gap" between our teams. We finished with the same record this year and since they beat us twice, we had a better record than them against the NFL. They weren't anything special as the Vikings demonstrated in the playoffs. We just need to do a better job with the gameplan and execution against them next year so we can match up with them better.

And will you people who keep harping on a "Real Middle Linebacker" please think before you speak... our real MLB was injured before the season.. show me any team that can replace a top tier starter that close to the season.. now I agree we need some depth.. but stop acting like its a liability on the team...

turn the corner at running back, quarterback and center on offense and upgrade that 2nd rate defense. they have already prepared to revamp special teams with a new coach which is an excellent beginning. i feel he will change the punter first. stewart bradley comming back from a serious leg injury is a season away from returning to being good. always improve your middle first. free safety was a disaster in 2009. all championship teams start with a strong quarterback which the eagles lack since 2005. if they keep the status quo at qb the season is hopeless before it starts.

Well let's see the Braves won, what, 14 straight division titles? And attendance in Atlanta since that time has basically been chopped in half.... because the status quo is only satisfactory for so long. At some point, you've gotta take a step back and see what you can do to raise the bar, otherwise you test fans' commitment, it's no different here or Atlanta or anywhere else. If it weren't for the fans, they wouldn't be in business because we are the ones buying jerseys, going to games, etc. Giving AR another extension may be a nice "thank you" from the owner for the Eagles being a $billion-dollar franchise, but it isn't changing the status quo. A rookie GM and a couple new strength and conditioning coaches isn't changing the status quo (yes Tyahav - FA hasn't started yet, but with the collective bargaining issue, the only name remotely worth even a peak is Peppers). Not only is this team not Super Bowl caliber, what makes it tougher to swallow is that they got taken outback and smacked around by their most hated rival 3 times in one season. Without organizational and philosophical changes in direction, all you're gonna get is a couple more seasons of hoping for a Wild Card and an inevitable early exit from the playoffs. Barring those changes at the top of the ladder, I'll choose not to purchase tickets or jerseys or go on road trips. But as long as Lurie sees those seats continue to be filled at his precious Golden Linc, he has no reason to change gears. Can you blame him?

Folks.....here is the game plan...a QB that is accurate; commitment to the run (B-west...not sure if that is you); get more physical and bigger receivers; get another big and fast DE; upgrade LBs; get a vocal and hard hitting safety. Dun!

JMICK - you sum up my basic point. You and some other seem to be living in the past circa 2000-04 when you talk about the consistent success of this team. Over the last 5 years, the Eagles have a .550 winning percentage, have won a whopping 1 NFC East Title and have even finished last in the division twice. How, exactly, is that spoiling us with success?
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 1:04 PM, 02/09/2010
uh JMick, payton and the saints have had continued success. They took us out of the playoffs just 2 or 3 years ago and lost in a championship game which you seem to think is a great accomplishment. And then he goes 8-8 (we also went 8-8 recently), and then he goes and wins a SB. so in like 4 years he has accomplished more then Reid has in 11 years. Reid goes 10-6 and losses to the saints, then goes 8-8, then 9-6-1 taking a miracle just to make the playoffs and then blows the championshop game by calling 80% passes and only 12 run plays and then goes 11-1 against bad teams and 0-5 to playoff teams and loses in the first round while payton wins a SB. I cant say he is a better coach then Payton. He has lost way more big games. thats not good. in fact his playcalling is horrible and thats why he will never win a SB. payton ran a 54/46 balanced offense this year even with brees hitting 70% of his passes, an NFL record. Reid every year, throws it 60%...and no team that throws it that much has ever won a SB. you do the math.

Jauron reporting to clueless McDermott is a joke, seriously. Our defense was pathetic. On offense, McNabb has run his course for sure but the real issue is the offensive line. Peters and the Andrews Sisters killed this team. Then losing Jackson was the nail in the coffin. If you are going to pass 50 times per game then you need stud bookend tackles and a solid interior line. We don't have that. Kolb will be good for a few games before he gets beat up. He is much smaller than McNabb and will not last 16 games behind that line.

I love it! You Eagles fans are the dumbest bunch of cry-babies in the NFL. I love watching you morons tear down your own Pro Bowl QB and team after another winning season. Ever wonder why no top-flight athletes want to play there? Ever wonder why your home-field advantage is meaningless? It's because you guys create a culture of losing! I hope you people keep doing exactly what you’re doing for the next 50 years!

I hope they brought Jauron in to make McDermott sweat. McDermott was a terrible choice for defensive coordinator. He is a kid. The defense was noticeably and substantially weaker this past season.

Zeru - I don't think it is a split at all. It is a PR plan. This way Reid can act like he is loyal to McNabb and that Banner forced his hand (assuming they get a decent trade offer). Think of it as good cop/bad cop. SF and Arizona both should be calling for McNabb.

Not to go off on an unrelated rant, but what is this organization's fascination with the extra use of the word, "there"? Every Reid press conference is all about doing a better job "there." Now we hear that "THERE is a gap THERE". Where? Go ahead, count the number of superfluous "theres" next time Andy speaks.

I wonder how this bargaining agreement will play out...the Eagles have an advantage with people like Weaver now not becoming an unrestricted FA. The downside is the potential about of unrestricted free agents dropped significantly b/c of this.

Honestly I think to much blame goes on to the Quarterbacks, Mcnabb isn't losing football games, he's not missing tackles or poorly covering recievers is he?...it's a total team sport...McNabb has better stats than half the qb's in HOF...Do you honestly think Kolb can win the SB...McNabb was successful with James Thrash and Pinkston, Stallworth,Curtis, Reggie Brown...give the guy a break. And if anyone thinks they would rather have Vick then know his best season 2004 his comp.% was 56.4 , Mcnabb's worst season 2006 57%...watch what you wish for...maybe you'd rather have Pederson, Mcmahon or the Detmer brothers...oh can't forget you cry babies who gave Garcia God status for winning a few games.

Truth is, Cowdumps are way ahead of Birds. So far ahead that they are out of sight. Anyone who thinks Birds will have a shot next season without making major changes is fooling themselves. O Line, D line, linebackers and secondary need serious upgrades in order to compete with Dallas. Will not even mention QB. Blocking and tackling are the main things needed to win in the NFL. Birds did neither in the final 2 games, therefore, season ended with a thud. Injured players working hard to get healthy for upcoming season. How about taking a shot at Peppers?

They go out and sign the top two avalable O-lineman last year, no one could have projected the problems they would have there and they go out a replace MLB after we lose the best LB we have for the year.. yet some of you claim Joe's spinning or not doing anything... they work hard every year to turn over the roster to make it better and will again this year.

Whatever your opinion is of the quarterback's skill level, I agree it is a pretty foolish sentiment to suggest he doesn't have heart. You can't throw 4 TD passes on a broken leg with no heart (why his coach would put him in position to throw 4 TDs on a badly injured ankle, is another story)

JOE, JEFFERY....QUIT FOOLING YOURSELVES.....YOU SAW THE GOLD STANDARD ON SUNDAY.....Sean Payton destroys your coach....both teams would destroy your team....so would Minnestoa and Dallas....YOU ARE SO FAR AWAY YOU CAN'T SEE THEIR DUST..... and until you decide that a Championship is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR BUSINESS PLAN You will never achieve it...as long as money is THE most important thing...YOU both will be LOSERS...(rich yes...but losers jsut the same) Your coach and GM can't win THE Big Game, can't pick good backups, (who Joe would not pay anyway) and cannot make gameday adjsutments....Neither of you desreve this franchise.....but you both do know how to make money....but you have NO PRIDE and are satsifeid with just making the payoffs and hanging around for a game.......(10 different teams have won the Super Bowl since you have taken over...)... Sunday should have been an eyer opener for you both....but suspect you have neither the "desire" the "commitment" nor the "competaiveness" to become "Winners"....and all your spinmeister moves do not change that ......as a leopard can't change his spots...You Joe and your boss Jeffery are just Losers.....and the city desrves better....Hopefully you will sell and go back to whatever you did before you mikled an NFL Farancise and its fans.

Yup. Before I clicked on this article I knew there would be four or five idiots in the first ten posts blaming EVERYTHING on Donovan McNabb. Worst fans in sports right here in Philadelphia. It's McNabbs fault Sheldon Brown was playing injured. It's McNabb's fault the Eagles lost to the Arizona Cardinals last year with the lead in the fourth quarter. It's McNabbs fault the line backers couldn't get any rythym whatsoever this ENTIRE season. It's McNabbs fault DJax was owned by the Dallas secondary. It's McNabbs fault Westbrook had fifteen concussions this year. It's McNabbs fault he has to stand outside the huddle waiting for his nervous nancy coach to call plays to him in crunch time. It's McNabbs fault the Eagles receivers were, once again, in the top ten dropped passes for the entire NFL this year. It's McNabbs fault the O-line was giving him roughly 2.5 seconds in the pocket (from ESPN News, by the way). Yues, geniuses, it's all on Donovan. In reality, he wasn't very consistent in the first Dallas game. However, the only thing that WAS DOnovans fault was 11 losses to other teams in the NFL, over 3,000 yards and 22 touchdowns with, once again, the least amount of turnovers in the top 10 QBs. Those are stats and facts. What are the haters going to bring to that??? GUESSING that Kevin Kolb is the next Joe Montana. Worst fans in sports.

Hey Dr., here's all you need to know about Smiley. Losing 17-0 with under 30 seconds to go before half in the last game of the year, with so much riding on it, our Qb's last 2 passes were 6yd and 7 yd completions to Westbrook that moved us to our own 43 yd line as time ran out. Don't we have a speedy receiver we could throw downfield to? Two checkdown passes? No guts. Gotta keep that completion ratio solid. All I could here was Herm Edwards going " YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME ". Time for a change.

I think someone on 610 stated this, but I have to repeat. The Eagles like to win, but they do not mind losing. This is the problem from the VERY top to the BOTTOM of this organization. At the end of the day, they go home and counts our hard earned money for their product, which does not care. It is more than just McNabb. This team will never change the philosophy and get RBs that can run it down the throat. Any young talented coaches with fresh ideas leave or are forced out of town where they are succeeding (Spags, Payton, Harbaugh, etc...). It is their way or the highway. "We have a team that will be in the hunt every year." What they don't tell you is they know they have a team that is just not good enough to win it all due to attitude, management, and yes... current personnel or lack of key personnel to save money. I am tired of their spin on things.

Jiggs, Hopkins was right on about McSmall having no heart but he forgot Reid too! The 2 of them have had 11 years to put a Super Bowl on the shelf and both have failed miserably yet they are still here. Why??? I'll say it again one more time, I don't want to here about all the regular season wins that mean nothing when you fail so often in the big games. Check the fans poll on who should Go or Stay with the Eagles.

The Eagles being "cheap" argument is one of the dumbest, and least insightful arguments out there. Love how people over look all the big money deals the Eagles make just because they didnt sign "their" guy.

Morons, the fans and the ownership have different definitions of success: fans define success in a singular fashion, and that is by raising the Lombardi trophy at the end of the year & owners define success as a function of profitability and revenue, just like EVERY OTHER BUSINESS ON THE PLANET. For Christ's sake people, get a clue.

jkidd49 - umm, the eagles entered last season somewhere between $20 and $30 million under the salary cap. actually, at one point they were in danger of being penalized for not meeting the NFL's minimum salary requirement. So please, enlighten me, how is that a dumb argument?

"When you lose that soundly twice in the span of six days, then you have to look at all of the aspects that go into the game and objectively evaluate what areas you need to upgrade to be able to change the outcome of the game." Joe, using the word soundly, don't you think your evaluation should include changes in coaching. Your the one that used insanity last year, the fans didn't. When you see a coach like Payton come in, and accomplish what he did in 4 years, don't you have questions about who is running your team?

stikolaboloni - and do you know who else was between 20-30 million under the cap...? The cardinals, broncos, bucs, chiefs, titans, dolphins, bills, 49ers, texans, bengals, patriots, falcons and vikings, almost half the league. And payroll number is irrelvant anyway... Do you know who had the highest payroll..? The Raiders, how's that working out for them? 4th lowest payroll, none other than the Colts. And that is why its a dumb argument. Not to mention the numerous large money deals the eagles have made over the years.

The Cowboys were blown out by the Vikings, they are no one's measuring stick, especially ours.

that has as much to do with rookie salaries and draft position as anything. regardless, their "large money deals" are essentially targeted at locking up young players to multi-year deals at an affordable price... which now they are seeing is coming back to bite them. When said player gripes after seeing his salary falls under market value, or a Brian Dawkins-type wants a payday he probably deserves, the front office almost always balks, and the result is usually a holdout or the player just goes elsewhere. If you ask me, knowing that EVERY team suffers from injuries EVERY season, they would've been better served to use that cap space and better fill out the roster. Instead, guys inevitably got hurt, their replacements stunk, and a certain faction are left playing the injury card as to why they didn't get it done this year.

NEW offensive coordinator to start. New CB corps. Another MLB, because Bradley won't be 100% or fast for another year. Kolb.

McNabb is the best thing that ever happened to the Eagles. He is a sensational QB and showman. The fans love him and cheer wildly when he dodges a tackler and escapes a sack. He should have been the league MVP this year. The national TV analysts always praise him for his abilities and his intelligence. He has a better arm then Brees and is smarter than Manning. The very very small minority of philly fans that don’t like him always site his passing inaccuracy. If you really look at that, many times its slow receivers like Kevin Curtis or Celek not getting to the spot fast enough. I am tired of the people complaining about the air guitar. That is his unique way of relaxing before the big performance. Its not fair how a few of the fans treat him. If this continues, we are going to lose him, a man can take only so much. I hope and pray that those few fans do not upset him to the point that he asks for a trade.

McNabbgags...Sensitive...A superstar QB like #5 should never have to answer to fans. When you are the best at what you do you should not take negativity. The vast majority of the fans cheer him and wear his #5 jersey. Just look at all the people wearing #5 jersey. They know and show by wearing his number 5 that he is the best QB that ever played in the NFL.

McNabbgags...McNabb is a high character very intelligent guy. He wanted nothing to do with TO once he got to know him better. TO is a loser and #5 just does not associate with losers like him. Brady almighty was nothing until Randy Moss came along, just goes to show the character difference between Brady and #5. Brady will take anyone. Fans all over should wear their #5 jersey to show support for our QB. Whats this 4th quarter stuff? Thats the o line and receivers that is choking. Again, I urge all fans to wear their #5 jersey or even #7.

There's a gap between the Eagles and the Cowboys, then between the Cowboys and the Vikings, then between the Vikings and the Saints. That is A LOT of gap jumping that needs to be made. Evel Knievel couldn't make it across the total gap! Time to start a new era, even if it means taking a step back. GET RID OF DUMB AND DUMBER MCNABB AND REID.

Sean Payton isn't a clown, he is a deserving Super Bowl winning coach. By the way, the Saints had some injuries too, just in case Banner forgot.

The GAP? Wade Phillips absolutely schooled Andy Reid in three games. While Reid was mesmerized with gimmicks like his new wild cat, on-sides kicks, and double reverse; Phillips and the Cowboys focused on fundamentals. Its leadership. Reid got distracted and got poor support form his staff.

haHA! The she-gles suck, and nothing is gonna change no matter which QB you idiots go with. You have the WEAKEST OL in the division, a trash talking loser for a WR, an aging SB loser, a rusty ex-con, and a rookie for QB. Along with a weak defensive front, idiotic and classless disgusting thugs for fans, Asante Samuel is the ONLY thing you yankee losers have to be proud of. Thats right. I forgot. Your filthy city has that statue of a fake boxer from the 70's. Closing the gap with Big D? Not in this lifetime. 2010-The Boys' from Big D-First NFL team to win the SB in their OWN HOUSE! World Championship number 6! Congratulations to Filthadelphia on BOTH of your Super Bowl losses. Maybe the Eagles would have better luck at curling...

Payton looked "great" because his on sides gamble paid off. If the ball had wound up in Basketts hands instead, the media would be singing a different tune. It was all in the bounce of the ball in that game. And one poor route by a Colts receiver. Wasn't so much coaching skills...the "little napoleon" did alright, but not rocket science by any means.
