Banner, Brandt: Sheldon's Timing Bad

POSTED: Tuesday, April 21, 2009, 8:18 PM

Sheldon's historic hit on Reggie BushOn the day after Sheldon Brown publicly aired his trade demand, frustrated over the Eagles' refusal to consider redoing his contract, Eagles president Joe Banner and consultant Andrew BrandtJoe Banner appeared on Comcast SportsNet to give their side of the dispute.

The Eagles approached Brown to extend his original 2002 contract in 2004, his first full year as a starter. Players and agents argue that contracts done before the substantial change in the salary cap triggered by the 2006 CBA are more outdated than anyone could have anticipated when they were signed. Banner called Brown "one of the few players in the league to get a contract that early, with that much time left." Brown's extension doesn't expire until after the 2012 season.

Brandt, the team official Brown said kept postponing meetings to talk about Brown's situation, said it was "unprecedented to have four years left" in a renegotiation.

Brown told the Daily News he felt Brandt and the Eagles disrespected his agent, Jason Chayut. Brandt described his actions as "listening to them, being respectful of their position -- but it's not the right time."

Brandt struck a decidedly softer tone than Banner, who listed prominent players on other teams he considersAndrew Brandt underpaid and noted that they have not requested trades.

"I think it's human nature" to be dissatisfied with a long-term deal, Brandt said. "People see the market pass them by."

Brandt summed up by saying: "The Eagles have to be respectful of the situation, but at the end of the day, they cannot adjust a contract with four years left on the deal."

For once in my life, I agree with management. Four years is too much.

Can't see them using that 21st pick on a corner. They have Hanson, whom they really seem to like and Ike was 1st round talent before the injury. I think anything after the 1st round is fair game though. The depth at corner was probably already an issue, so this may not have thrown much of wrench in the plan. Even with Brown shuting up and playing, the Eagles only have 1 experienced backup corner - you have to think this was an area of need alreay.

This is the first time I side with a player demanding more money. With the loss of Dawkins, the Eagles are looking for Sheldon to step up and be the new captain. That means playing a more prominent role on the team. In any other job, when the bosses ask you to do more work, there is usually a pay raise. Also, if Sheldon had a guarantee that the Eagles would pay the remaining years of his contract he would have less leverage, but teams do not have to fulfill their end of like they expect players to. The Eagles can just cut a player or ask them to earn less money. The Eagles do renegotiate. They just did it with Peters. Takeo Spikes was good enough to be their starting linebacker until he refused to take a pay cut, so they cut him and didn't pay him another dime owed on his contract. With only a few earning yeras left for Sheldon, in a company that has shown they do not care about a player after 30, then he has to look after himself.

No more dough for a spoiled brat who cannot abide by his contract. No one forced him to sign it. The Birds just signed two other DB's. Brown, baby, see how you like Cinn.

Several of you think management is wrong because they can cut the player or not pay if one is hurt. The contract Sheldon signed was guaranteed due to it being an extension of his rookie contract. He received a good bonus and is being paid 3-4 mil a year. If you don't sign the contract you can become a free agent and hit the market. It's a gamble for both sides, he wanted security and agreed to it. Just like regular work, someone new can come into a company and earn much more than a person working there for 10 years. If you don't like it, quit. Now Sheldon should just honor his agreement and play.

Mr. Promise, you are forgetting when Sheldon signed his contract to begin with. He was just a first year starter and wanted the security of a long term deal (which is guaranteed by the way), instead of waiting another year to make it to free agency. He gave up a bit of money potentially to avoid playing a year and risking injury or not playing well for a nice signing bonus and a VERY long term deal. Win-Win, Eagles get a discount, he gets security for the rest of his life. Now, after just 2 years, and 4 years left, he wants them to tear it up and be paid as if he signed only a 2 year deal? It doesn't work that way. They would renegotiate if there were only 1 or 2 years left, BUT NOT 4!!!!!!!!

No didder, what it will do is make every guy on that team want their deal re-done. The QB already wants his re-done. Now every O-line guy will want his re-done, next the D-line will. And soon enough they will be cap strapped like the Redskins. And after the draft and Peters signing (not to mention if a WR still might come here), they are gonna have a good chunk of the 20 million spent anyway.

Mr. Promise, are you a numb skull or what? When Sheldon signed that extension he got six to seven mill. Not exactly chump change. He pocketed it and now looks at what others are getting and feeling screwed. Perhaps he should look at the people being laid off and average down and help those folks that are out of work. I just can't fathom where you are coming from with this. By his own admision, most of the players drafted with him are now out of football and he's still making his two or more million a year. Do I feel sorry for this clown?, absolutely not. He got his bonus and now he shows that he is simply a greedy creep. He also has incentives in his contract that could increase his earnings each year by nearly 2 million more. Do you seriously expect the average person to empathize with this cry baby? If he is a clown, you are Bozo !! Has he been to a pro bowl yet? No. Is he one of the top corners in the league? Again no and by the way the other players and coaches determine who goes to the Pro Bowl. If and when he earns a raise by being voted to the Pro Bowl, then and only then should you put your two cents in on this subject.

I am a diehard Eagles fan. Been a season ticketholder for a long time. I really can't say that I agree with Sheldon on this one, however, I completely understand his position. He KNOWS that the Eagles will not do the right thing when his contract has one year left; they'll make him play it out, and then toss him on the scrap heap. One other thing that defenders of this DISGUSTING FRONT OFFICE fail to recognize; when the Banner, Reid, et. al. sign these players to the long-term deals when they are young, they are basically holding a gun to the player's head. Sign this deal, and you'll start. Don't sign this deal, and well...who knows what we might do in free agency or the draft re: competition for your position. Even if you don't agree with Sheldon on this issue, how can any of you possibly defend this front office? They are a complete bunch of slimebags including Jeff Lurie, Joe Banner, and Andy Reid. Doesn't matter what you say boys, it's your actions that define you.

I am not going to say I'll side with Sheldon becuase I think players should honor their contracts but I understand where they are coming from, you know if Sheldon stunk he would have been gone years ago the team would not have honored the full contract, the teams clearly hold the upper hand at least until the new CBA. To me the real problem with this and the other recent public fiascos is the Eagles have too many cooks in the kitchen. Reid is supposedly caling the shots but you never hear anything from him about player negotiations and Heckert seems to be a GM in name only. So we have a geek like Banner being the primary negotiator and now we have some "consultant" negotiating as well? No other team has so many people being the public face in negotiations and no other team handles their PR problems so poorly. First Dawkins and then Tra Thomas two long time vets deserved at least a call from Banner, Reid, somebody to say you know what we're not going to resign you but we appreciate what you've done for us the last 12 years or so. Banner is a friggin geek who gets off trying to be the bad cop negotiatior and he really needs to stay in the back room crunching numbers. The players who left all say they love Lurie so its clear who the problem is. If Heckert has any real responsibility he needs to be more involved in negotiations not some "consultant", and Reid needs to keep them all line if he's really in charge. Can we please have someone at the DN weigh in on this everytime I hear something from Banner and nothing from Reid and/or Heckert I get more and more sure this team is a complete mess management wise

Chase Rollins - Say what you want about the players loving Lurie (which they claim to), but the bottom line here is that Jeff owns this team. Joe Banner is an extension of Jeff Lurie at the negotiating table. While this kind of porous behavior and lack of respect towards employees is most frequently exhibited by Banner, it is accepted as policy by Lurie. Therefore, Lurie condones Banner's actions and is thus part of the problem as well. The whole organization top to bottom is arrogant and out of touch with reality. They make it very difficult to be an Eagles fan these days, as exhibited by the complete disrespect of Brian Dawkins, maybe the greatest Eagle of all-time. It's really a shame - the players and the fans deserve better than these scumbags.
