Banner on profits vs. victories

POSTED: Monday, April 4, 2011, 12:14 PM

Eagles president Joe Banner spoke at Temple University last week during the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management’s ongoing Executive in Residence program.

Banner met with 250 students, talking about his unsual path to a high-profile position in the NFL, the labor negotiations, his managerial style and more.

Perhaps the most interesting question came from a student who asked about the balance of profit margins vs. victories. Banner did not hesitate: the Lombardi Trophy is the ultimate goal above all else.

“That isn’t even a decision that takes half a second,” he said.

Banner said the commitment to build the Linc helped establish an organizational culture built on the singular goal of a championship combined with principled and passionate leadership.

Banner also recounted how he was in Hawaii interviewing for a teaching position when longtime friend Jeffrey Lurie called him about making a bid on an NFL team.

Lurie had bid unsuccesfully on the New England Patriots. He bought the Eagles in 1994.

Yeah, more like a decision that will take 50+ years. I'm running out of patience with this team.

These kids need to speak with the Phillies leadership to get an honest sense of passion for a championship and passion for Philadelphia..........

When did spend money = winning? With the way bonuses were counted against the salary cap and other manipulations, you cannot judge a team's intentions by looking at their salary numbers. Eagles always got the guy they wanted. Being under the cap is what keeps the Eagles competitive every year. You want to end up like the raiders or redskins? IMO, the biggest problem is AR, not his coaching, but his player evaluation. I like AR during the season, but cannot stand his player selections. ESPECIALLY on defense!

I bet the fans in New England are happy Lurie's bid for the Patriots was unsuccessful.

AHA, the spinmaster in another of his finest moments....talking down to students in a controlled atmosphere....The only goal he and Jeffery have is making money.....If that was not true, he would have a Lombardi Trophy by now....Just think what would happen to Joe if the Eagles had not made any money for 12 years....Yup..he would be fired....but since the only goal is money, and Joe keeps all spending at a minumum, Jeffery is a happy man.....and he allows Joe to do anything he wants......Just another smoke and mirrors performance by Joe....who wouild have figured he parlayed a fantasy football groupie experience into the best paying job in the league...

yea ok Joe, just like you guys have been more successful then the Steelers for the past decade. thats a good one. best roster ever assembled. a real classic. giving reid 13 @$%$% seasons, thats great. he should have been fired like 3 years ago. 08 championship game was pathetic throwing it 80% against a beatable team and losing a 4th championship game in 5 attempts and 1 SB. with the most lopsided passing in LEAGUE HISTORY. its not rocket science. delusion from top to bottom in that organization.

If the Lombardi was the ultimate they would have signed Mark Brunell like Reid wanted and we would have had two trophies. Joe didn't want to pay him. Didn't want to pay Trotter and TBay got the trophy. Those two decisions were huge and revealed the place of money over the trophy.

The Eagles used to be a team that I couldn't get enough of (even during the lean seasons). Then they became an arrogant, delusional organization with a knack for patting themselves on the back. Now, I see them as little more than a semi-amusing sideshow. By the way, Hamels pitches tomorrow night.
