Vick Can Still Throw

POSTED: Saturday, August 15, 2009, 12:34 PM

All that stuff about timing and footwork and conditioning remains to be assessed, but Michael Vick had no trouble Michael Vick at Friday press conferenceeffortlessly connecting with receivers Saturday, in his first NFL practice since spending 18 months in federal prison.

Wearing a white longsleeve workout shirt under his red No. 7 practice jersey, Vick completed his first pass of the practice, a short toss over the middle to Danny Amendola, with no defenders on the field. Later he authored back-to-back 50-yard TD strikes to Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson, during 1-on-1 drills against defensive backs, on a day when Brian Westbrook returned to practice on a limited basis, and Victor Abiamiri and Trevor Laws were participants for the first time since training camp began.

Cornerback Sheldon Brown suffered a rib injury of unspecified seriousness late in practice, Brown falling on the ball in the end zone after picking off a Donovan McNabb pass intended for Kevin Curtis.

Vick stayed briefly after practice, throwing perfect end zone strikes to Maclin and Jason Avant. He also threw to ex-Temple QB Adam DiMichele and talked things over with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and quarterbacks coach James Urban.

Asked how it went, Vick said, "Great," as he jogged off the NovaCare field. An Eagles spokesman said Vick would not take questions Saturday. In the locker room, Vick emerged from a treatment room, saw a few dozen reporters gathered around his cubicle, and observed, "This is weird," before going back into the treatment room. The cubicle contained the same gray-and-pale-yellow pinstriped suit and yellow shirt he wore to Friday's press conference, or one that was identical.

DiMichele does not figure to be around much longer, especially with Kevin Kolb about to rejoin the crowded QB cadre, but practicing alongside McNabb and Vick was a pretty good treat, he said.

"If you're me, what more can you ask for?" he said. "It was exciting."

DiMichele said he stepped in as a receiver for Vick when "I saw coach Mornhinweg catching. I know he can catch it, but I figured I'd step in and catch some for him. Mike just wanted to work on some things, his footwork and some timing routes.

"I thought he looked good. I was actually surprised. In the past, you've seen him just flick his wrist and the ball just shoots out, and that's kind of how it was today. He made some throws in the 1-on-1s, it was like he wasn't even gone for 2 years ... Looked smooth."

PREVIOUSLY:

We interrupt the Michael Vickathon for this important announcement: Brian Westbrook will be a limited practice participant today, Eagles coach Andy Reid said, and presumably will do more tomorrow, when he and the team are scheduled for a full-pads workout.

Westbrook, who underwent an ankle cleanout in June, has been working out apart from the team since training camp began.

Reid said Vick will do everything the other quarterbacks do in practice, that he is not limited, though the coach cautioned again that Vick will need time to get back in football shape. He hasn't played since New Year's Eve, 2006, when Vick and the Falcons dropped the regular-season finale at the Linc.

ESPN.com reported Saturday that Vick will be paid his $1.625 million 2009 salary unless the Eagles release him before the season opener. Any possible regular-season suspension will not affect Vick's salary. In 2010, ESPN>com said, Vick is due a $1.5 million roster bonus March 5. In addition, his base salary in 2010 is $3.75 million, $1 million guaranteed. He can make an extra $2.75 million in incentives.

Vick has been assigned a locker stall just down from where the other quarterbacks, the kicker and the punter dress, on the left side of the long, narrow NovaCare locker room. The first group of left-hand stalls, which starts with McNabb's, ends at a doorway to the treatment and shower rooms. Vick's is the first cubicle after the doorway, separated from the space of longsnapper Jon Dorenbos by a support pillar. As a few dozen reporters from all over the country crowded around Vick's new digs, Dorenbos wasn't sure the pillar offered enough of a buffer.

"This is going to be a circus," Dorenbos said, arraying folding chairs as a protective barrier.

Other tidbits:

*Reid said the Eagles added to their "wildcat" package at Lehigh, independent of any thoughts of signing Vick.

*Reid said reaction from the team has been "so upbeat and positive with it," that the addition has added "almost a little bit of energy."

*Reid reiterated that Kevin Kolb is the No. 2 quarterback, but he couldn't explain how that would work in a regular-season game, when only two QBs normally are fully active. Let's say the Birds wanted to use Vick in the "wildcat" down at the goalline in the first quarter. If he were the third QB, and entered the game, the other two couldn't play again. Reid would have to fully activate all three QBs, meaning he'd have to deactivate a special teams player. Or he could just make Kolb No. 3. In which case, Kolb wouldn't be the No. 2 quarterback, after all.

*Reid said he wasn't worried about reactions in other cities, that when the Eagles go to play in a hostile stadium, "they're all protesters of the Eagles."

*He said Vick needs to lose 2 pounds, which Reid didn't think was bad, after 18 months in federal prison and two years overall in the justice system.

*Not practicing today are RT Shawn Andrews (back), TE Brent Celek (shoulder/AC joint), DE Trent Cole (same), and LG Todd Herremans (foot). Reid said Kolb did some work "on his drops" Saturday, but his knee was still tender.

*Reid said TE Cornelius Ingram underwent a successful ACL repair, performed by Dr. James Andrews in Alabama.

I wish Vick's contract included a significant amount of his salary goes to the ASPCA.

Do they have to label him as a QB on the roster? Why can't they just label him as a WR, RB or something on the roster and still use him at QB during a game

With the restrictions faced by the numbering system for QB's, I just can't understand why he wasn't given a number such as 15. Then he could come in at any time and perform at any position. My thought is that this thought never occurred to Andy during this no-doubt hectic period of time. Here's hoping that someone informs him of this possibility, so that no problem is encountered during a regular season game.

Is anybody wondering where the Birds got the money to pay Vick $1.6 mill? I mean, didn't Joe Banner just say last week that they had no money, that they spent it all? First he said the Birds had so much money under the cap, he couldn't spend it all. Then he said they only had enough left to cover their draft picks. Then Joe said there wasn't any $$ left. Now, he signs Vick to a million plus. Can anyone ever believe anything Banner says?

Dave and Tampa, he would have to change his number from #7 then, its only for QB's, punters, and kickers. Not position players. Ridiculious I know.

Maybe there can be an underperfance clause in Vick's contract. If he underperforms he can get held under water and high-voltage shocks. Is he going to pay back all the rescue groups that took all his dogs that were still alive?

"They are going to wind up pulling Westbrook, Weaver, Maclin, McCoy, Avant or somebody pretty darn good off the field to get Vick on the field." - is that a joke? Who besides Westbrook out of that group is as proven of a football player as Mike Vick?? He was one of the best talents in the game in 2006....if hes 20% the player he was than he's better than most of those guys....have your opinions of the man, but the football player is "pretty darn good"

Dr. Michael: How many NFL players do you think paid to have unwanted children aborted when they got some girl in some "away" city pregnant? What's worse killing a person or a dog? Maybe we should just shut down the NFL (sarcasm intended).

I hope they do well, but if the circus ends badly - Vick screws up somehow, the Eags self-destruct under the national spotlight - can Lurie bring himself to resign Big Andy to another contract in 2010? Sadly, probably so.

Jaws made a good point on Mike & Mike the other day...He said if Donovan is having a bad game and we're losing then 65,000 fans will scream for Vick...When you look at the #2 and #3 QBs Vick is the one I'd want to replace McNabb.

Despite all of the controversy, You have to think if Vick is throwing some great passes now, I think he was brought in, to really make McNabb push himself and give an ultimatum to produce more winning drives or get benched.

@ mike l. There's a difference with the money paid to rookies. There is a rookie pool and the nfl determines how much each team gets based on the number of picks and where they pick. That's why they only had "enough to cover their picks." As for the salary cap, they have plenty of room and money left

I began to read this thread and had to create an account to set things straight. Prior to all of this, Micheal Vick coming out of college at Virginia Tech, had ALL of the skills needed to be not only a great quarterback, but perhaps one of the best ever. ANYONE that says any differently to what I just said doesn't really know football. And for real fans, take up knitting or something, cause all you do is waste people's time. Micheal Vick in the NFL brought the Falcons to the NFC Champ up here if you remember. Probably didin't have the resources that we have here. Remember, McNabb (who I love and any real eagles fan should too), was 50/50 run pass coiming out of Syracuse. Learned to become what he is today under Andy Reid. Andy Reid has kept us competitive for past 10 years. Notice our window never closed you fools?????? What org other than New England has had that success. Even if we won the superbowl against the Patriots that year, my favorite Eagles team was one of the ones with B&E, Reggie White, Randall, Eric Allen, Jerone Brown. Etc. And any real fans probably have to say the real thing. This Team with Vick, McNabb, Westbrook, Jackson, McCoy, Curtis, etc is the team that I could finally say can take the All-Time Eagles title for me. We want Championships!! And the only things that could get in the way of that for us now with Vick, is the backwards f's that want to create a Vick/McNabb controversay and not see that my man, McNabb, should be thanked for making this happen and not let the lower end of this city get in his head anymore. Anyone against this probably had dad's as cowboy fans anyway.............

I don't care how good the man plays football. I can't let my children cheer for this team anymore. This is a family sport. Everyone got upset over a little skin at the superbowl, but it is okay to hire dog torturers and convicted criminals to play the game? Our family will need to find another team who is more family oriented. I am glad to hear that companies are pulling their sponsorship...if it is true.) It is a disgrace that Vick was hired by the Eagles, and criminals are allowed to play in the NFL.

About the #2/#3 designation, remember the league has stated that Vick will be suspended to start the season for what is, at present, an undetermined number of games. It would be stupid to designate him #2 for the start of the year.

Jayjay why does it always have to be about race? I would say 80% of the NFL are players of coler and us white people buy tickets and root for our favorite teams. Last time I looked McNabb is black or he spends a lot time tanning. Just because we dont like someone of the likes of Con Vick has nothing to do with race. If Charlie Manson was black you would probaly say he was set up. That was a raciest statement. lol

Can believe people are calling sponsors, GET A JOB! If you want to support and help animals, be part of the solution and not the problem. Take the money you would have spent on tickets, gear or food at the games and donate it to the cause. Otherwise you are wasting everyones time and not helping anyone. I dont need to see pictures of abused animals (I KNOW IT ALREADY) and see you standing on the road as we are all forced to pay for extra police and security because of it.

The same fans that cheered when Irvin was down on the turf at the Vet, same fans that boasted about a jail in their stadiums are up in arms about a man trying to make things right. How much money has Jeffrey Lurie and the Eagles given to animal abuse charity since signing Michael Vick? How much of the 1.6 million is Vick giving? They sure did not hesitate to rapidly sell Vick's jersey for profit. Or is all this "soul searching" at the expense of the animals who were given no second chance not to die in extreme agony and pain? It is easy, even cheap, to forgive when you are not the victim. Talk is also cheap.

Wow it amaze me that ppl Vick paid his time, cant you all see it's not personal it's business the Eagles are trying to win, I agree he was wrong for what he did but Americans can go deer hunting, behead them hang them on their walls as trophy's then eat the remains which YOU call Venice as for stew! Yes cows, chickens, and pigs are the norm but aren't that how we live those same animals are tortured and killed and the same ppl ( animal activist ) eat meat! So again I'm against the crime he did but from a football issue it's business besides the Eagles our embarrass that the Phillies won and the Eagles had a dominating roster for the longest! Vick I'm pulling for you as a football fan but off field get your life straight! Go Birds this team is gonna be scary for teams!

Great and HONEST COMMENT, jalinsgs. Only God, MY LORD JESUS CHRIST, is PERFECT! He that is without sin, cast the first stone. Agree or disagree with the signing of Vick, we all have our own issues. A man or woman will make mistakes. We must learn from them and not make the same mistakes.

Why don't you give it a rest, RussOCNJ? Hasn't society gotten it's pound of flesh after two years of incarceration. Exactly when is a man's debt to society paid and the rehabilitative process begun with redemption. One can only atone for their sins if they have the opportunity to do so. Vick's vocation is football fool. You sound ridiculous with the same old tired and redundant PETA mantra that, quite frankly, most of us are sick and tired of reading and listening to. Vick is an Eagle. He is welcome as far as I am concerned and I will continue to support the Eagles in the future as I have in the past. Jeez.

Vick is not the product of a street culture that just coincidently encourages dogfighting. He was a willful participant in a bloodsport that gives dogs no options except to win or die (or get mangled and he'll kill you later). The Eagles top brass have lost their f'n minds. If you enjoy watching animals get ripped to shreds, you ain't my kind of Eagle and Tony Dungy gives no animal killer credibility.

Vick has always been a tremendous athlete with a world class arm. Nothing has changed. It is all good for the Eagles. The man is a tremendous football player and it is time for everyone else to simply move on. He has. Give the man a break.

Can we drop the charade that Vick's return to the league is about anything more than a team believing he can help it win games. It is not about giving a felon a second chance, about helping him put his life back together or about acknowledging the debt he paid to society. It is not about some greater good, and that won't change no matter how many times Tony Dungy frames it that way.

I think they will list him as another position because the 3rd string QB can only come on the field if there is an injury to the 1st or 2nd string.

I am starting a drive to boycott every one of the Eagles sponsors as long as they have Vicks on the team. His second chance should be cleaning up after dogs, not making this kind of money playing football. It does not matter what kind of football player he was, he is the scum of the earth.

Why ruin football for yourself. He's a backup QB who might be slightly useful. No need for the hand-wringing. He doesn't have to be your favorite player. Save yourself the self righteousness and enjoy the game.

HE WITHOUT SIN LET HIM CAST THE FIRST STONE!!!!! What Michael committed was a major sin but in his asking for forgiveness from his creator he was granted another chance. My question to all of you perfect and sinless people who have acted as God by judging your fellow man, what will you do when your sins have been exposed to the world? I have read your blogs and have witnessed the disdain and hatred you have toward others who do not look like you and are doing what you wish you could do. I've said it before and I will say it again take a real good look at the man you see in the mirror and search your soul to see if you are qualified to pass judgement on anyone. Oh yes, for all of you who have accused Donovan of being insecure, sensitive and soft I rest my case it appears he is a bigger man than any of you midgets, I mean Little Small Minded People.

I plan on writing to Mr.Lurie and all of the Eagles sponsors, protesting Michael Vick on the team. He doesn't deserve to be in the NFL. He currently has a job with the Humane Society. If he can save even one dogs life, then he will have finally done something good. Let him continue his new career with the Humane Society. Not in our NFL.

Keep pulling lowlifes like this off the street, and they will never win. He can still throw? lol. Still? He could never throw. The ability he was bred for, to run fast, doesn't make him a QB. They may as well round up all the crack heads in north philly to build a team. Ever seen a crack head run? Talk about fast!

For all of you wondering where you can buy a Vick jersey, ask the 'pharmicist' standing at the end of your decaying, bullet riddled block. But he doesn't take access cards, so go rob some law abiding citizens in another part of town. And think about what you support and teach the next time a sensless crime is perpertrated by your own kids against you.

I'm an Eagles fan with Falcon season tix. Wait until the receivers figure out that Vick's main throwing talent is to put the ball right where the receiver can get the most clobbered and they'll start dropping them like they did down here.

Let's go # 7 E.A.G.L.E.S EAGLES If everybody is healthy who is gonna stop this team? You know what concerns me the most about my Eagles is our defense.... Our Defense look awful rip JJ. And this race thing wow it amaze me how ppl get on here talk trash about white or black but in reality sit in front of ppl and smile and act like a friend leave the race out of it, it goes from dogs, football now race um excuse me but isn't football players 60% Black? All I'm saying is Let's talk football not race, dogs, etc. NOT about something that WE cant control choice was made the man is a Eagle.

Can Vick STILL throw? When has very EVER been able to throw? He's ranks below average in passing every year he's been in the league. He made the pro bowl with his legs, not his arm.

Controversy in Baltimore concerns whether Hauschka or Gano win the kicking job. Matt Stover waits in the wings if they both fail. How can you Eagle fans stand this. I would have my season ticket for sale in the NEWS with a pitch calling for Michael Vick fans to come and see the DOGFIGHTING QB (SORRY he got CAUGHT?). All in Philly. Don't put up with this. Email your team and tell them his second chance should be working a construction job.
