Asomugha and the Eagles

As the news continues about the changes being made in the defensive coaching staff for the Eagles, there also are plenty of issues to consider relating to the players.

As Paul Domowitch wrote Friday, among the Eagles' biggest priorities should be pursuing Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Asomugha, a four-time Pro Bowler, is considered one of the league's top two or three corners.

Asomugha's contract was voided last week when he failed to reach "likely to meet" incentives.

As Domo pointed out, the Eagles could have the best cornerback tandem in the league with Asante Samuel and Asomugha.

Asomugha, however, might not be going anywhere.

"There's a chance; there's a good chance," Asomugha said during a series of interviews with ESPN. "It's funny because I've been doing interviews all day and I hear a lot of people saying, 'No longer an Oakland Raider,' 'You are not a ... ,' but anything could happen at this point.

"When you go into free agency and have options, any team is up for you to be on - and the Raiders, obviously with me having been there for so long, have a great shot at it."

Asked if he wanted to return to the Raiders, he said, "I would love to be back," Asomugha said, "but I do have options, so we'll have to see what happens."

Of course, there is a clause in his contract that says the Raiders cannot use the franchise tag on him, so it likely will depend on what he is offered. The Raiders also have gotten rid of defensive coordinator John Marshall, and will have a new head coach, likely Hue Jackson.

As we have reported previously, Eagles offensive line coach Juan Castillo's name has come up as a possible offensive coordinator with both the Vikings and Browns. Vikings coach Leslie Frazier and Browns coach Pat Shurmur were both former Eagles assistants.

No teams have asked for permission to speak with Castillo, a source has told the Daily News, but that could always change.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune theorized today that Castillo could potentially be in line for a position such as assistant head coach/offensive line with the Vikings.

The Vikings seem to be waiting on Josh McDaniels, whom they interviewed Jan. 7. McDaniels interviewed with the Rams yesterday, according to reports.
