Cowboy fined for hit on Celek

POSTED: Wednesday, January 13, 2010, 12:06 PM

Cowboys safety Ken Hamlin was fined $12,500 for his hit on defenseless Eagles tight end Brent Celek in the first quarter of Saturday's wild-card game, according to reports in Dallas.

Hamlin was assessed a personal foul penalty on the play. Celek said he did not see Hamlin coming and ended up with a swollen lower lip.

HONOR FOR DeSEAN

DeSean Jackson, who has been selected to the Pro Bowl as both a wide receiver and kick returner, was named to The Sporting News' All-Pro team today as a punt returner. Voting was done by a panel of 636 players, coaches and executives.

Jackson led the league with an average of 15.2 yards per return.

Denver safety Brian Dawkins also was selected to the team.

The publication named Green Bay's Charles Woodson as its defensive player of the year. Saints safety Darren Sharper was second.

CHILDRESS GETS HIS CHANCE

Vikings coach Brad Childress gets the chance to do something his former boss could not do the last two weeks -- beat the Dallas Cowboys.

Childress, the Eagles' former offensive coordinator, said he had not yet spoken to Andy Reid about the Cowboys.

"I just know what it’s like at the end of the season, all the exit interviews and the things you’ve got to accomplish, so I’ll probably catch up with him a little bit later in the week," Childress said. "It’s all right there on tape for you to take a look at and right back-to-back, two weeks in a row.

Childress was asked about the similarities between the Vikings' offense and the Eagles' and what that might mean, given how well Dallas handled the Birds.

"You know even though it falls under the generic name of West Coast offense, everybody kind of has a little different personality," Childress said. "We’re a different personality really than the Eagles. I can see concept-wise what they were trying to attack and what they were trying to do and then conversely what Dallas did differently in the second game than in the first game. I don’t think it hurts, but we’re wired a little bit differently."

Dawkins being voted in is a joke. That's more of a lifetime acheivement award.

Hey "PhillyinDaChi", Dawkins was one of the better safeties in the league this year. I'm not saying the best, nor are his skills/speed what they were in his prime here in Philly, but he actually deserved the award this year based on his skills and team leadership. Why so many people in this town talk sh*t on Dawkins is beyond me. He left for a better guaranteed contract, something Philly would not have given him. While he didn't do it for the money, he proabably did it for the job security factor and I'm sure he felt disrespected by the Eagles. I'm not saying we should have offered him what Denver did, but it's so sad how negative this city is towards its athelets once they leave. Probably b/c so much of this town lives their lives as though the Eagles and Flyers are the only thing to live for. I love this town, but the people and their negative attitudes really get to me sometimes. Oh, and Dawkins would have actually shown up on defense against Dallas...something our safeties decided NOT to do.

Avoiding hits extends careers, especially when your DJax's size.

Gotta agree with aisaac: how early in Saturday's game did you hear "man, we could really use Dawk right now." And how much money did the mob pay Sheldon Brown for his performance? Only reasonable explanation.

How does he avoid hits? He's rarely ever in a position to get hit, being as fast as he is, and frankly, when he is in a position to get hit, he takes it and gets up. Unless, by avoiding hits, you mean, getting into the endzone instead.

I'm surprised that Dawk made all-Pro, but "good on him." D-Jack had some spectacular punt returns, and was probably the best PR specialist, Cribbs the best KO returner, and Harvin the best combo returner. I hope DeSean has the humility and work ethic to keep improving, especially in games when things aren't going easily for him as a WR. The sky's the limit if he works hard and stays healthy.

Sorry but there is no way Dawkins should be on this team.

When are they going to replace those two "has beens" pictures on the Eagletarian header to show Desean Jackson and Kevin Kolb? I think it's appropriate that Mcnabb has a dumb look on his face also.

I agree with Ibrianfellows concerning the old picture. But keep Andy's picture just as it is. That is a famous expression. I can imagine him thinking, "But we made it to the playoffs...It's chowtime!"

As a punt returner/receiver... aren't you supposed to avoid hits? Oh you want our star receiver to lower his head and take hits? Dumb.

@imbrianfellows- I dont think theyre replacing the picture, because they both still play for Philly. Was that supposed to be a serious question ?
