McNabb or playoffs?

POSTED: Tuesday, March 23, 2010, 8:22 AM

We usually try to stay away from the glut of television talking heads, but this comment caught our attention.

The subject of the day, and seemingly the subject of every day, is Donovan McNabb's future with the Eagles.

Former NFL defensive lineman Marcellus Wiley, now an ESPN analyst, had this to say about McNabb:

"To their fans, they're always winning the silver medal with him. After a while, when you can't win gold, it's like they would prefer to not be in it at all."

So, we ask you as Eagles fans, is that really true? Would you rather the Eagles be a playoff contender with McNabb or miss the playoffs with another quarterback and start a new chapter?

As you know, the Eagles have made the playoffs in eight of the 10 years that McNabb has been the full-time starter and one of those missed years was when McNabb played only nine games. They have been to five NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl.

That is not to say that the Eagles would not be a playoff-caliber team with Kevin Kolb as their quarterback, especially if the Birds continue to address their problems on defense.

Wiley also offered this about Michael Vick: "You could see the progression of getting back to where he was as an athlete. It might not be too long before where we see the old explosive Vick."

*

Speaking of quarterback changes, Dennis Dillon, from The Sporting News, reports that 15 of the league's 32 teams have seen some sort of change among their quarterbacks this offseason. And that does not mean there won't be more ahead.

One spot where the situation remains somewhat fluid -- and a spot that Eagles fans are monitoring -- is Minnesota and whether Brett Favre will return.

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that he is expecting Favre to return, although he won't apply any pressure to force him to make a decision.

"There were a lot of people who questioned us last year both with the decision of bringing him on board and him coming on so late, but it turned out to be a great decision," Wilf told the paper. "We're looking forward to having him come back this year. We understand it could work either way, but certainly with the team that we have I would expect that he and everyone else is excited to come back to fight for a championship again."

More to come from the owners meetings later ...

If they can get a 1 and 2, trade Donnie. Kolb with lots of O line help can throw the apple. The Birds have the WR's to catch and if Bell signs , the Eagles have 3 pretty good ball buys. Get some D people and they will contend. If they had 2 1's and a high 2nd, they could fill 3 spots very quickly. Go for it and trade Vick too. Picl up two vets that will be around after camps.

Last I checked it takes a team effort to win a SB, not one person, anyone who knows sports knows this, sorry 95 percent of Eagles fans that leaves you Out.......

Voytas, I misread your point about the championship games so I take that back. Whatever you think of him, getting to within one game of the SB 5 times is an accomplishment. Pman has NOT done that and please don't give me the "he won a SB" bit because it was the Bears and Pman usually stinks in the playoffs and gets a pass for everything he does. If DM had pulled that stunt at the SB [running off the field and not shaking hands with Brees] he'd be crucified. PM does it, eh, it's PM, it's got to be OK. If $$ meant wins why only one SB for him? Answer: the QB doesn't do it alone. I am not giving DM a pass on those games either but this constant harangue that he is always to blame is ludicrous. At least you give some blame to AR, unlike some others. We agree on that but I give him the majority of the blame for multiple reasons. As far as Ricky Williams, I don't have to read Wikianything to know that DM was the correct choice. You can't be serious on that one and there is NO ignorance involved. RW quit on his team, is a loser on and off the field and nothing will change that, case closed. And when did the law of averages have anything to do with sports? If you go by that, the EAGLES were only average. Did you expect DM to be able to carry an average team to the SB? Circular logic? Yep. Now, one last thing. I've said it is best that the Es trade DM now. It's best for him and best for the team. I have no love for the guy or any other player. However, the disingenuousness of this board towards him though is appalling.

Yeah lets not let Donovan work with a Team that has the Potential to win a SB for once in his 11 years, lets give the team over to Klob so he can throw pick 6's all day.

One thing I read on these boards all the time that gets old and is really frustrating is that "Jeffrey Lurie only cares about the bottom line and making money. He needs to care more about winning a super bowl." I hate to break it to the ignorant "fans" who continue to post that but Jeffery Lurie is in it for th MONEY first and winning SECOND. He's not a fan, he doesn't root for the team like all the drunk idiots who sit in bars on Sundays. He is a businessman who purchased a team with borrowed money to MAKE MORE MONEY! Get over it. He's in it for the MONEY. He wants to MAKE MONEY!! Duh!!

Give McSlab the hook and start Kubb. its his time. Donowhine had his chance for the last 11 years. His time is over! If we're lucky enough to keep Mike Vick, run the VickCat and let the man run the offense from time to time. Find a vet QB (is Jeff Garcia still functional?) and bring him in for insurance purposes. Forget all this "ok, at least we're in the playoffs" BS! That's old now, people!

Reddgie, the QB position does bring out the extremists, doesn't it. I'm not sure why but it seems though that a lot of people take it personally. The idea is to put the best team on the field, the rest is just smoke. I disagree somewhat with you today on one point. I think winning a SB and profitability go hand in hand and can't be separated. It's the approach that bothers me. If I was the FO I wouldn't listen to us either. Lonewolf as GM? Hahaha. Ricky Williams over DM? 'Nuff said. Moving on, so far this year the Es have cut a lot of fat and some no longer productive players, but other than resigning a few of their own [Weaver and Avant, rightly so] I don't see any real improvement. Tapp and Jackson? What do you think? I'm hoping AR has a trick or two up his sleeve but not many of those have worked before either. I have to admit I'm worried about the future. I have no faith in KK other than being a caretaker, no faith in Reid and Marty changing their philosophy or being able to even adapt in to the roster they have, no faith in Reid's drafting ability or his FA signings. I really see a downward spiral coming. But then again, wiff says this year KK wins the SB so why worry at all, right? Book it!

What a ludicrous question. Anyone who would rather see a player leave town than see their team qualify for the post-season is not a true fan. Don't compare the Eagles and Sixers, either. The Eagles have shown that they are capable of advancing in the playoffs.

I've got to agree with bleedinggreen's comments. If anybody wanted McNabb he'd already be gone. McNabb will be here again next year, not because he's the Eagles' best chance of winning but because while everybody loves telling Philly fans they don't know what they are talking about, not one single team is willing to put their draft picks where their mouths are and trade for McNabb.

One more thing: Every year we stick with McNabb is another year of DeSean Jackson's career wasted. It's another year of Jeremy Maclin's career wasted. These guys are young now, but the NFL is a tough game and they won't be around forever. Eagles fans aren't looking for a superstar QB to come in and win them a game single handedly. We are just looking for someone who can get the damn ball to our playmakers.

"To their fans, they're always winning the silver medal with him. After a while, when you can't win gold, it's like they would prefer to not be in it at all." That is certainly true for a certain percentage of the fans. These are the fans who always think the unknown is better than the unknown...they are always ready to anoint the next prospect or unproven guy as some sort of savior. Look around the NFL...look at the QB situations of the various teams...if Kolb turns out to be another Bobby Hoying, then it may be a long, long time before the Eagles have a good QB again. As for the Superbowl talk, the McNabb haters will continue to hate McNabb even if he leads the Eagles to a Superbowl win. Look at the Phillies. Didn't take long at all for people to turn on Hamels or Lidge even though they were World Series heroes. The Charlie Manuel haters still rant about him. Some people are just miserable people who like to complain and whine and they'll continue to do that no matter what.

Why is it that the only position that we can't discuss upgrading is QB without being called bad fans?? McNabb may be a good QB but he buckles under pressure and then blames everyone else for the L. If our TEAM is good enough, then we should be able to win a SB without DM. In fact, look at the QB's wearing SB rings from the same time period... Brees, Roethlisberger (2), Manning (both), Brady, Johnson, Dilfer & Warner. None of these guy's did it alone!
