Andy on trading Kolb: We're listening
Paul Domowitch, Daily News NFL Columnist
If, through either negotiation or court order, the NFL lockout is lifted before next month’s draft, there’s a very good chance the Eagles will acquiesce to Kevin Kolb’s request to be traded.
Head coach Andy Reid pretty much acknowledged that this week in an interview with club employee Dave Spadaro that appeared on the team’s web site.
``People have shown a little interest (in Kolb), and as this thing picks up, I’m sure it will continue,’’ Reid said. ``Listen, we’ll sit back and we’ll evaluate.’’
Kolb has just one year left on his contract. It wouldn’t be a financial burden for the Eagles’ to keep him as a backup to Michael Vick. While Vick signed a franchise-player tender that will earn him in excess of $16 million this year, Kolb’s 2011 salary is less than $2 million.
But in a year when there are an inordinate number of teams needing quarterback help and the draft is mainly full of uncertain projects, Kolb’s trade stock is high.
``He’s ours,’’ Reid said. ``Everything else from there is easy. It’s kind of like what I said last year. If people are interested, they’ll come to you. But on the other hand, do we love Kevin Kolb? Are you kidding me?
``I mean, this guy is a helluva football player. You look at his numbers and the things he did when he had the opportunity to start, and you start six or seven games and you’re the NFC Offensive Player of the Week twice, and all the 300-yard games he put together and the way he commands the offense and all these things, you’re not in a big hurry to get rid of Kevin Kolb.’’
After listening to all that, you almost wonder if the Eagles are tempted to hang on Kolb and trade Vick.
Asked in the interview about offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg’s recent comment that Vick could be one of the ``all-time great’’ quarterbacks in the game, Reid said: ``He sure was a pretty good quarterback before he came here. You didn’t know about the layoff. You didn’t know what you were going to get after that. But he came in and worked his tail off.
``First of all, he identified some problems he needed to work on. Then, he and Marty and (former quarterbacks coach) James Urban attacked those problems. And he got better. There are some other things he needs to get better at. He’s identified those. This offseason and through training camp and the preseason, he’ll work on those.’’
Both Vick and the Eagles’ offensive line showed a vulnerability to the blitz late in the season.
``Do we need to do a better job with the blitz? Absolutely,’’ Reid said. ``All of us, not just Michael. We all have to do a better job there. It will be a good challenge for us all. It reminds me of the Super Bowl year. We went into the offseason (after the Super Bowl), there were a couple of blitzes we needed to work on there and we were able to work them out and get them straight and we fixed them.
``It’s a fixable problem. We kind of look forward to the challenge of fixing it and thyen having somebody come in and try it against us.’’
Despite 2 straight first-round playoff exits, Reid said his team, ``could go play and compete for a championship today. There are not a lot of coaches that can tell you that right now.’’

Didn't Kolb lose 4 of the 6 games he started last year? He played really well against Atlanta but otherwise what am I not seeing? rvb2321
rvb ssshhhhhhhhhh...we're trying to keep other teams convinced Kolb is a legit starter, let's keep the truth quiet please... sla6yer
KK should fetch a 1st round pick, but probably not in the top 10-12 spots. There are likely a few teams that see him as the missing piece and would rather take a known commodity than gamble on a project in the draft. He has some upside, he's intelligent and he's been groomed for 4 years so he's ready to step in anywhere as a legit starter. I just don't think he's a Pro Bowl QB. chandler561
Of course you hang on to Kevin, and trade Mike Vick. It's not fun, Kolb is not as good and may never be. But he's younger, and good enough to win a championship with the right group. Best guess is, Vick will finish 2011 on injury reserve. You trade him while he has extremely high value, getting maybe two first round picks.
Of course the whole lockout thing probably means no trade will happen before the draft. But which do the Eagles want: Kolb, Ayers, Carimi, and Pouncey for the next 6-10 years? Or Mike Vick, Ayers, and Carimi, (one first rounder for Kolb), with Vick lasting a year if he's lucky?
armchairGM
quick, lift that lock-out... M60tanker
There are at least 12 teams in the league that need a qb now. That makes Kobb a top 20 qb. Schaub fetched two second rounders and two spots in the first round. Kobb will get us at least a first -- maybe a first and third. phillydopes
As soon as I saw the headline, I knew the article had to be written by one of these two. Not once did I see a direct quote from Reid saying: We are listing to trade offers for Kolb vipers53
lol Kolb...he has a 73 career passer rating, 11TDs to 14 INTs and 9 fumbles. this guy absolutely SCREAMS mediocrity and GMs around the league know that too. and for anybody who thinks the Eagles are getting a great deal with a late first round pick? think again. the eageles selected Kolb in the early 2nd round at a time when they had other needs that THEY STILL HAVE. which means that for only a few draft spots the eagles will have wasted: 4years of nothing from Kolb, 4years of development of another player who would have HELPED the team, 12million dollars and all this hype just to move from a high second round pick to a late first?.....if they do that Kolb will have been a COLOSSAL failure IcanTakeit
If Vick gets hurt, we go with Franz Kafka? dasher
Armchair, I couldnt have said it any better, except I think you missde the fact that we are dealing with Andy Reid and company. The same guy that made a O-line coach the new D-coord. The same guy that didnt start Brian Westbrook his first two years in the league when everyone else saw how special he was. The same guy that for his entire tenure here has refused to run the ball even when Lesean McCoy was averaging 5 to 6yds a carry in game that we lead by 7 pts or less or were losing by a touchdown or less. Andy will do what Andy wants to do. Make enough moves that get us back to the playoffs and fill the seats at the link so Jeffery can have a extra special xmas. Vick would bring in at least 2 first round choices and maybe some extra picks as well. It would be enough to secure the o-line but it isnt going to happen. Atlas
Oh, listen to the whining fanboys and the Vick Nuthugger Society; Kolb never got a real shake with this team, and he never will, considering Reid's mercurial temperament, and fans who just need something to complain about. Honestly--if Reid wants to go with this flash and dash offense and throw the ball 80% of the time, then Vick is who he needs. Kolb is a more ball-control style QB, and the differences are too much to deal with. I'd say get the best you can for him; at least one viable starter at a position badly needed, and/or a good draft pick. It becomes a win-win situation; the Eagles get something they need, Kolb gets a chance with a team that will actually support him, and the Nuthuggers can take comfort in knowing Vick will be the man. Just what will happen to the Kolb bashers? They'll find someone else to complain about I'm sure. MidStaterUXB
I will never, ever believe one word that Fat Andy says. He has outright lied too many times; he has no credibility. If his lips are moving, he is probably lying. He would have made an outstanding used car salesman. Fat Andy will never win a super bowl; that is final. oneway
Matt Cassell & Matt Schaub both were 'Promising' Backups & they were traded for 2nd rd picks . What makes 'Kolb' any different to warrant a 1st round pick ?? 2BellyBillyFromPhilly
Unless Reid starts to have more of a "real" balanced offense and not rely on his QB's rushing stats to show how he is balanced, then he absolutely needs to keep Vick and trade Kolb. As far as him winning 2 of the 6 games he started; The Dallas game is a throw away because he was playing with minor leaguers the GB game was only 1 quarter of play, and then he had 3 starts in the middle of the season that you can look at. He won 2 of them convincingly, one againts a pretty good Falcons team that went 13-3. He lost only one game of those 3 and that was the Tennessee game where his secondary completly melted down and gave up 200 yards recieving to Kenny Britt of all people in the 4th quarter. HE was offensive player of the week twice and threw for over 300yds in each of his first 2 starts. The guy is legit. Is he Joe Montana?? I dont think so, but he certainly knows how to play the game and he is easily a top 15 QB this year if he gets traded to Arizona. I would prefer to keep Kolb and have the offense more balanced , but as long as Reid is the coach, the Eagles are better off with Vick for now and you dont want Kolb walking at years end and getting nothing for him either. My guess is that they trade him after the lockout ends and they get a first and another pick in the top 3 rounds, but they will be in the following years draft because this draft will be over before the lockout is over. Might just be a good thing too. Lets see what necxt years draft class brings. This one is fairly mediocre, especially at our areas of need. hubbs_in_frisco
Who is dumb enough to trade for a rag-armed country bumpkin QB? I have to chuckle @ all the DOPES in the area that have been calling for this kid to start since being drafted...great call morons!
Where can I find the info that states this clown is a "winner" or good enough w/the "right pieces" around him to hoist the Lombardi Trophy? I haven't even seen a glimpse of that from this "pretender". Hopefully there is a sucker out there willing to trade for him... somertonspartan
@2BellyBillyFromPhilly - Atlanta got more than a 2nd round pick for Shaub. They got to flip-flop first-round picks with the Texans and received second-round picks in 2007 and 2008, so getting a 1st for Kolb is not unrealistic. MrBigDizzle
Unfortunately for KK you were drafted by the "smartest" guys in the room. Being with the "gold" standard origination will only help you in the future. Like I said before don't forget to leave the knife this coach stuck in your back. Hope you end up with a team that has a decent O line. delcodanno
Please keep KK... Trade MV. Didn't we have enough of McNabb? Vick and McNabb are so similar... They can escape practically everything, great leaders, weak on recognizing blitzes and coverages, and below average accuracy. Isn't it time for a passing quarterback to lead these Eagles? Clt Philly Fan
Once again the head case Reid will outsmart himself. MV will be the final move that will cost him his job. Reid's deception off the field is superior to that on field. When is the owner going to wake up. Kioto
@BIG RED we listen to you after every game say you 'have to do a better job'..40% of KK's start were NFL player of the week awards..he beat the best team on the schedule last season the #1 seed falcons-he took them apart..no one can succeed with the wilddog offense coming in and out every other play..mv will never win a SB,,he regressed the last six games..MV=0/SBs..book it..times yours.....wolf. wolf 4
kiotto-i agree 100% BIG RED will never win a SB with injury prone mv he hasn't played a full season in five years,he regressed in the last six games,,he was 19th in passing years,16th in TDs,15th in pass pct,he will not last a season and the same mv diehards(ppiff-manus-cyo-hoodscum-CHARmaine)will flipflop like they always do..MV=0/SBs..book it.....wolf. wolf 4
kk should be traded for a couple of barbie dolls and beef jerky..forget player of week awards..vick was nfc offensive player of year...reid is no dummy. he will trad him before draft if cba and in october if no cba...book it.wolf (the smart one) wolf 4
The Eagles will mess it up shawnmac
Teams will offer a number 1 pick, but Reid will want more, so they won't trade him and he'll sit on the bench all year, then walk. ej610
Unless Vick gets a lobotomy, the things he needs to work on will not improve. ej610
It is the usual Andy saying nothing....of course they will listen....Duh....but unless they can get a high pick, he will be gong nowhere.......but a trade for a stud defensive lineman or a real offensive lineman who could replace anyone of the current line would be a good deal... nuggett
they'll trade him in a heartbeat if the price is right...and it won't be just draft picks kgd
Let's trade KK and get what we can. If he plays out this season and then walks as a free agent, we get NOTHING. Tar Heel 1
His first pass was an INT and his last pass was an INT....nuff said. NC Eagle Fan

Good God what a bunch of no-nothings you so called "Eagles" Fans are. Did Kolb lose 4 of 6 games? Are you kidding me?? He lost them ??? Man you people better get over yourselves, you're all making Deadskins fans look good. You're of the same ilk who said Brees couldn't play. Yeah - you're morons. Phillyexp
falcons were fraud team and everyone knew it...wolf wolf 4
its so beautiful out..time to mow my lawn in my kk wife beater..ah to catch kolbs balls.wolf wolf 4
Hey wiff, it looks like you aren't going to be the only one we can call ex-Eagle! Hahahaha, remember, I told you it was coming! You heard it here first baby! AR = Dr. Frasier Crane: They are both listening! Hahahaha, it's almost over wiff, just like a time bomb, the tick...tick...ticks are coming faster and faster until KABOOM...no more Kolbjob...and no more wiff. I can't wait for both!
Nephew, the crazy uncle will need mega-therapy soon! tpizza- It doesn't matter who QBs for the Eagles next year. Once Andy's first 10 or so scripted plays are executed - the ones he takes all week to put together, his weight-induced hypoglycemia kicks in and he's in a foggy stupor for the rest of the game. Andy's stern look during the games and at the post-game press conferences are really just looks of total confusion. The Eagles will always be at a disadvantage with Reid on the sideline. He just can't get in done on game day. Time to look for a physically fit, experienced coach who can hang in for the entire game and keep his wits about him. Boru
Oh, and wiff, before you go too far with that injury BS, exactly how long did KK last till he was knocked out? Yeah, like you'll answer...about 10 minutes. And I disproved that last 6 game BS so many times it isn't funny. So how did kk do in his last 2 games [as an Eagle, btw]. Talk about regression. He fell back so far you needed binoculars to see him. Tennessee and Dallas were two beauts. Yeah, and Vick regressed to being responsible for all the Eagles TDs except TWO in that time span. Learn the game wiff. You don't keep the run of the mill mudder and get rid of the thoroughbred. And do you honestly think KK will win a SB? That's the question wiff. I asked you time and again to convince me but, as usual, you can't/won't. It isn't that Vick may or may not win, it's just that KK has absolutely NO CHANCE at winning a SB, so you go with your best shot. That's Vick! Vick can win games on his own, KK has to have max support. Case closed. Move on! LEARN THE GAME!!!! Hahahahahahahahahaha...tick...tick...tick... tpizza
phillyexp-i agree 100% we wouldn't have known what Aaron Rodgers could do if the Packers didn't give him a chance and let Brett Favre go and mv ain't no Brett Favre-can i get a witness.....w. wolf 4
He'll get a team w/a real offensive line and then it'll be the same "damn he got good when he left Philly" But tade him to shore up the biggest weaknesses the Eagles possess..OFFENDING OFFENSIVE LINE. shabokey1
@ppiff-did i hurt you and CHARmaines and CYO feelings mv has not completed a season in five years..he's 19th in passing yards-16 pass tds-15 pass pct...it's a 50 50 split between the fans alot of fans want to keep KK because of the mv injury factor no completed seasons in 5 years..facts are facts...MV=0/SBs..book it......wolf. wolf 4
I think that Kevin Kolb will never play well enough to satisfy the Eagles fans or the F.O. I am not saying that Kevin Kolb can't play very good football I am sayimg that under Andy Reids' system of passing passing passing that KK does not have the arm or mobility to work in this system .Get him into a system where he has time to see and adjust to the other team he will probably flourish as a QB. ccoulter68
wiff, feeling exceptionally delusional today?
Keep Vick 86%
Keep KK 46%
Yeah, that's even. tpizza
"...It reminds me of the Super Bowl year. We went into the offseason (after the Super Bowl), there were a couple of blitzes we needed to work on there and we were able to work them out and get them straight and we fixed them...." Uuhhmmmm...what was the Eagles record the year after the Superbowl again???? Yeah, I'm thinking 6-10. But don't worry, they were great in the blitz pick up......

BREAKING NEWS! REID TRADES KOLB FOR A CHEESESTEAK. Justaschmuck
To all the people laughing at the notion that Kolb could be a very good starter, especially the guy that said "what am I not seeing?", did you not see the good games he did have amongst his 7 or 8 starts? And what exactly are people who are actually professional scouts seeing where they obviously want to trade for him? I have no bias towards any player and I dont care who stays and goes but Im always amazed at the dislike of Kolb by the idiot fans. How many qb's have had as many good games out of their fist 10 starts? Aikman and Manning were horrible at first. Since when does a qb have to be Joe Montana every game in his first 10 starts? Please name the other qb's who have done as well in their first several starts. Let me know when you can name one. That doesnt mean he'll be good in the long run but why does he have to be a bust?? You people are morons. Sewellmatt

Kolb is definitely screwed by the lockout. There is no doubt about it. If he could walk in and get a settlement done I'm sure he would spend 24/7 to make it happen. Right now the way things are going he is stuck here for another year. He will get some starts but he will be no closer to establishing himself as a starter. If the lockout goes past the end of April it will be real hard to move him unless the Eagles get some monster deal. It has to happen like this. The Eagles through the back channels have to tell a team what players they want in the draft. The team ships those players to the Eagles after an agreement is reached. That team has to prove to the league the Eagles didn't contact them and those are the players they really wanted. It can be done. There will be more than one team doing that same move. You'll see these mysterious trades after the draft when the agreement is signed most likely in August. Drew777
Hey Andy-you might want to watch for a corner blitz from the right. The Vikings hurt Vick on the first play, and Green Bay did the exact same thing. And somehow, inexplicably, the Birds were shocked and sacked exactly the same way. Don't you watch film? I'll predict right here and now that next year the same thing happens on opening day. Please be ready. hallux
Please,no crocodile tears for Kevin Kolb. He received 12.26 million dollars last year. He played 5.1 games. That's 2.4 million a game. Boo hoo. Nice enough guy, now run along and fetch us a 1st round pick please. hallux
A first round pick for KK is laughable! pedge

The Eagles can only hope the lockout is settled before draft day as trading Kevin Kolb is a must. To lose Kolb for nothing at the end of next year would be a real mistake..Vick is going to be a top quarterback for years to come and he'll definetly keep the Eagles a winner. As for a backup QB, there will be plenty of veteran guys available cheaply who can step in a be our backup.. Seattle has a 1st rounder in the mid 20's and could definetly be a candidate to trade for Kolb. As far as the Cardinals, who may have an interest in Kolb, how bout a switch of 1st round and 2nd round picks and we give them Kolb? That would give us the 5th pick in the 1st and 2nd round and they get our 23rd selection in each round. That would allow us to get a real defensive stud in the first round like Patrick Peterson and a real quality offensive lineman in the top of the 2nd round like Derrick Sherrod. bradco
Kevin Kolb has a woeful lack of arm strength, as demonstrated in the Tennesse game last year as well as an inate inability to pick up the blitz. The Eagles NEVER benefited from Kolb at QB rather, Kolb benefited from the receivers he had. I guarantee you 100% of the QB's in the league would have improved passing numbers if they were throwing to Jackson, Maclin and Celek. KK will fetch a middle second round pick and that's it. With a year under his belt, and a full training camp knowing he's the starter, Vick, Maclin,Jackson and McCoy will burn this league up. I call them the "Four Degrees of Separation" and Philly WILL win the Superbowl with them in 2012! phillyfly
Kolb wants to be on a Super Bowl team...unlike the Eagles who has a Dog Killer starting and will never get a ring! MRD
