Andy: Juan to Make Calls 'As I Stand Here Now'
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
Eagles coach Andy Reid confronted a host of questions at his day-after news conference, in the aftermath of the Eagles' meltdown against the Lions, in which the Birds blew a 10-point lead in the final five minutes of regulation.
Reid spoke of doing a comprehensive evaluation during the bye week. Asked specifically if defensive coordinator Juan Castillo would continue to make the defensive calls in games, Reid said he would "as I'm standing here right now." That seemed less than a ringing endorsement.
Reid spoke of wanting to "tear things apart" during the bye week. He noted that there is "a lot of season ahead" for his 3-3 team. "I still believe we have a good football team," he said.
Though he expressed only lukewarm support for Castillo, the offensive line coach turned defensive coordinator, Reid vigorously disputed corner Nnamdi Asomugha's postgame contention that the Eagles changed their coverage scheme and blitzed more in the fourth quarter, after keeping the Lions in check for three quarters.
Reid did acknowledge that when the Lions flexed tight end Tony Scheffler wide, the Eagles went to dime coverage, with corner Brandon Hughes on Scheffler. That was the setup on the 57-yard broken-play reception that got the Lions back in the game, four snaps after Jeremy Maclin gave the Eagles a 23-13 lead.
Reid also scrutinized the offense's confused, horrendous start.
"We started poor. I mean poor," said Reid, who noted that the Eagles lead the NFL with 17 turnovers following two picks and a fumble against Detroit. He called that figure "ridiculous."
Reid reserved the word "pathetic" for the Eagles' final two drives, the last drive in regulation and the overtime disaster that set up the Lions' winning field goal. The Eagles had scored on their first four possessions of the second half, a touchdown and three field goals, before not scoring on their final possession of regulation, and going backward 21 yards on their only possession of OT.
I will not watch another Eagles game until Nick Foles is the starting QB & Todd Bowles is the DC. They are the most non-enjoyable team to watch. Complete mess on the field. So sloppy!! And Andy doesn't have the sack to make any of the changes listed above.. I those 2 moves are the only thing that could save his job here. Anyone who thinks this team is a Super Bowl contender with Mike Vick & Juan Castillo in power is out of their freakin mind!! I've seen the late Jim Johnson outsmarted in the post season... What do you think is going to happen to Castillo?? FetchDixon- You won't have to worry about it; there won't be any postseason!
JBinPA - J.J. saved Andy's bacon for years. He passed on and now it's time to pass on to a new beginning.
bonnerlou - Last time I checked, a good offense makes the best defense. Eagles offense regularly leaves the defense in less than desirable situations (turnovers/poor field position), and the fact the offense can barely manage 20 pts against the Lions leads one to think maybe the defense has given up on the offense and the "Mike Vick experiment".
Need new attitude, leadership, game planning and clock management. Professor1982 - Reid will not change. Oh sure, he might change for a game, maybe even two. Nothing will change under this regime so it's time to change the regime. Does Jeffy have the guts? The Tonner's not sure. The Tonner just hopes Jeffy will do a total housecleaning and bring in a personnel person with a track record instead of hoping the mailroom flunkie they promoted to GM will start making wise player choices. Whether you like it or whether you don't like it, learn to love it because it's the truth according to the Tonner and it's the best thing going today.
- You took the words right out of my mouth. Anyone who believes Reid will change...well, I got some prime real estate on Mars I'll sell them for.01 cent per ten thousand acres...no, make that square miles. If they believe Reid, they'll buy the property. essell
- So you're suggesting, with the same game plans; a less mobile rookie Quarterback behind the Eagles rice paper Offensive Line is a viable solution?
That is as ridiculous as asking Vick to stay in the pocket to wait for 20 yard routes to develop. Dexter - Les Bowen is a joke. Why isn't he asking about REid being ont he hot seat?
ebola
Its funny how all you loser fans want Foles as QB. He will play one series and get killed. New Song for the Birds!! CRASH EAGLES CRASH..in the city of Crying morons! MRD- This comment has been deleted.
papabear702 - As i look all around the league, all i see is rookie qbs winning games. RG3 beat Brees, Wilson beat Brady, Locker beat Ben R , Luck beat Rodgers... On and on it goes. Foles has what it takes to be a starter. Vick is just to inconsistent to ever be a superbowl caliber qb so why are we wasting time with him. He might get us to the playoffs this yr, but does anyone really expect him to make a deep run? Everyone will be watching and waiting for him to get strip sacked or injured, or dive head first untouched and leaving the ball on the ground for the defense to pick up. Someone please explain to me what Mike Vick has accomplished to warrant being unbenchable. Quick fixes rarely work in football, the only way to win a superbowl is to draft and develop your own qb. By giving Vick more time all your doing is prolonging a poor decision to bring him here in the first place. It pains me to say this, but i hope we don't win the superbowl this yr, i don't wanna be tied to this guy for the next 3-5 years because he got lucky once. He's incapable of consistent play, his entire football career is more than enough proof. Period!
The Pink Floyd - Oh, and the reason why Vick won't get benched is because of that lofty contract he was given. That would mean Reid and the brass paid a guy 100 million based on one or two games in the 2010 season. Thier egos won't allow them to admit that was a mistake. Reid is going to ride it to the bitter end, and as it looks Reid is going down in flames. I love the team but our head coach is not up to task, as I've stated before, that was evident when he had a lead in the SB and was out coached. It's time for new head coach who knows how to use the talents of this team.
- " It pains me to say this, but i hope we don't win the superbowl this yr..."
Believe me, from the evidence presented thus far, that is ONE thing you won't have to worry about. essell
