Shawn Andrews says not to believe any of the salacious rumors about his absence from the Eagles. Don't even believe the more mundane "speculation that I just don't want to go to camp," Andrews said in a phone conversation with the Daily News from his home in Arkansas Monday afternoon.

"I'm willing to admit that I've been going through a very bad time with depression," the Eagles' two-time Pro Bowl right guard said. "I've finally decided to get professional help. It's not something that blossomed up overnight. I'm on medication, trying to get better."

Andrews didn't want to go into the origins of his depression, which he said began a little more than a year ago and steadily worsened. "I really was kind of at my end," he said. "I've really had a lot on my mind, really (been) contemplating a lot of things."

Anyone who has been through such struggles knows the symptoms he is dealing with -- a frantic, anxious feeling, inability to sleep or concentrate.

"In the state that I'm in, (had he reported), I would be at training camp physically, but mentally, I could have gotten myself hurt or gotten one of my teammates hurt," Andrews said. "But I have a meeting with my doc on Thursday, and hopefully, I'll be up that way on Friday."

Actually, if Andrews shows up on Friday there won't be anyone at camp to greet him -- the Eagles play their presesason opener that night in Pittsburgh. Saturday would probably be good for everyone.

Andrews confirmed that he is being fined more than $15,000 per day because his absence is unexcused. He praised the Eagles, though, for being understanding, despite Eagles coach Andy Reid's hints Monday that the longer Andrews stays out, the more danger there is of sub Max Jean-Gilles taking his job.

"Football is important, it's a means to an end, but my mental health, I feel like, is a lot more important," Andrews said. "That's a helluva lot of money ... Money's good, money's a necessity, but it's not everything. I can't put a price tag on my mental state."

Andrews and agent Rich Moran declined to speculate on whether they could make a case legally or through the players' association to have the fines rescinded. They said they just want to get Andrews squared away and back with the team, right now.

Andrews has been reading some of the comments fans have made online about his situation.

"I don't expect sympathy," he said. "I know there are harsh people in this world, but dang, that made me feel low. I do care what people think about me, to an extent."

Andrews, who said he has continued to work out and is in top shape, 335 pounds, said he has spoken with a few teammates. He said he hopes to speak with the team when he returns, "to stop some of the bleeding."

Andrews said he is "a fan of Max," and that "Max deserves what he works for."

Andrews said when he speaks to his teammates, "I just want to look 'em in the eye and let 'em all know -- this wasn't BS, this was for the mental health of me, I could have gone out there and gotten any one of you hurt" by not being focused.

Look for more on Andrews in Tuesday's Daily News.

Give him help, give him support, give him room, and excuse that absense. Let him keep that penalty money for a mental health MD.

You guys are a bunch of children. People with clinical depression commit suicide, harm others. Don't be so quick to judge lest you be judged.

Good post Les. I had a feeling this is what was going on. There is unfortunately a callous contingent out there in the world that will make extremely insensitive comments and remarks like, "Oh sure, I am sooo depressed about my Million$" or "Grow up! Don't be such a Drama Queen". Truth be told, unless you walk in a man's shoes you will never know what he is experiencing or going through. Assuming all of this IS TRUE, Mr. Andrews is certainly saying all of the right things when he chooses not to complain about his fines, he thanks the Eagles for their understanding and acknowledges the very likely possibility he will lose his starting job as a result of his absence. As a former offnesive lineman, he is certainly right about the possibility of getting one of his teammates hurt if he wasn't mentally there. I lost multiple games in my career from "friendly fire" because a teammate didn't know what he was doing on a given play or he was just in outer space. Still, this whole thing spiraled much further than it needed to. The speculation has gotten so out of hand but I fault Andrews and his agent for that. I have a saying for this: "In a vacuum of information, speculation runs wild". People tend to be very understanding when they feel like they got an honest story. But the secrecy in this matter was so out of control that I must admit it has left me with at least a little bit of skepticism on my part. All in all, I wish Shawn the best and hope that he is back in the mental place he needs to be. Unfortunately there are many fans that care little about these guys as more than just football players who win games for MY football team so that I can feel good about MYSELF. But I also know there is a significant population of fans that actually do care and if you are reading this, i am thankful for you.

Depression is tough. Especially, when people so close to you die. It shows how money can't buy everything. Hope he's back in camp soon. He's already out of a quarter mil. People don't waste 15000 a day because they're lazy.

I'll take Andrews at his word that he is really battling depression, and not just taking time off during training camp. Depression is a very serious sickness, it often gets overlooked and even poked fun at by people who have never had the illness. It's a debilitating sickness that can take control of your life. Those who have it, don't want to be depressed, but they can not fix the situation on their own. That causes more anxiety and sadness becausee they want desperately to feel better. It builds on itself. I really hope Shawn is ok. It would be great to see him on the field this year. Get better soon.

if its clinical depression, its a medical sitation and hopefully that gets him off some of the fines. but regarding depression, it takes HUGE GUTS to admit it & face it. and HUGE GUTS to battle it. its not anyone's fault that the human body is a wierd bird and does wierd things. its like we have no control going bald, but depression is an even more silent and serious opponent. handling it, battling it and doing something in the face of this debilitating sickness takes courage! that he is admitting this AND fighting it, makes me PROUD HE IS AN EAGLE! GOOD LUCK SHAWN, ALL EAGLES FANS ARE ROOTING FOR YOU!!

As a Clinical Psychologist and long-time Eagles fan I am impressed by the maturity and confidence of Shawn Andrews in stepping up and letting it be known that he is suffering from Depression. Eagles fans, please educate yourselves and don't fall prey to the negative stigma which exists in our society regarding mental health. Depression is a real and serious disorder which can be incredibly debilitating, and yes can even affect professional athletes who earn large salaries (google what happened with Barret Robbins prior to Super Bowl 37 for a reminder of how serious this stuff can be). For more information on Depression and its treatment you can go here: http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/depression/complete-publication.shtml

This should have been addressed in the off season....Sitting around not doing anything is not going to help..Get out there stop feeling sorry for yourself and focused on your goals, your families and the teams goals!!!!...Getting off the couch is the first step!!! Many people deal with depression on a daily basis and still managed to function..Stop feeling sorry for yourself and instead of wasting that money paying fines, if you can afford to pay the fines then put the money you are wasting every day you sit out to a good cause the helps people with mental illness...Andy didn't sit on the couch last season and I am sure he had plenty to be depressed about!!!

I'm confused. I'm assuming that Andy Reid and the top brass at the Mother Ship must've known that he was suffering from a medical condition. If so, then why the tough talk all along? Why allow the talk about unexcused absences and fines and losing your spot, etc. to continue? That's pretty insensitive to pick on an employee with a medical issue. Unless, of course, they had reason to believe this wasn't the reason he was missing camp... This doesn't pass the smell test.

Our owner talks about being "the gold standard" in the NFL. Well here is an opportunity to show the rest of the league how to handle a delicate situation such as this. Don't fine Shawn Andrews - instead provide every resource the Eagles have to rehabilitate him. That way, when the Big Kid is ready to play, both mentally and physically, he will WANT to play for this organization. If handled correctly, this situation could show future free agents that the Eagles are willing to go the extra mile to take care of their players.

Depression is as physical a disease as a broken leg. It is usually caused by the body not making enough neurotransmitters, but sometimes by a region of the brain that keeps firing signals inappropriately and constantly. Those idiots who made the snide comments about a guy who regularly does what they couldn't do in a million years should try enlarging their brains by looking up the big word in my second sentence.

PhilliesFan08 - Depression isn't a medical conditions which is treated overnight. The fact that he believes he may make it into camp within a few days indicates he has been receiving treament for some time now. Perhaps DrMS and comment. As to the fines, the Eagles have been the class of the NFL under the current ownership. Once they feel the situation is as stated, and under control they will do the right thing (provided there is some control in place to keep the big guy doing what he needs to do).

This is a private matter, and the Eagles did not have any right to make the situation publice before the big guy wanted them to. My guess is Shawn went to get medical help on his own (good for him, the only way to be successful with treatment is to want it), and did not go throught the Eagles. The Eagles are rightfully holding back any medical opinions until they get the full story. If true, they will do the right thing for this good guy. Take it to the bank.

Depression is serious business and it affects more people than are willing to let on. So all the so-called "fans" who say Andrews doesn't want to perfomr in the heat of training camp or to cut him should take a good hard look at their mothers, fathers, wives, girlfriends or other family members before blowing off what Andrews' comments as that of a whining, pampered athlete. Someone close to you might suffer from depression and you might not realize it. Depression knows no profession or income. I give him points for realizing he has a problem to deal with. If Andrews is correct and suffers from depression, "fans" should show him support in helping him deal with it.

Would people be this cynical if he was being treated for diabetes, or uncontrolled high blood pressure, or some other "physical" ailment? Depression is a disease, there need not be an obvious "origin." It is a leading cause of disability. Fortunately, with the appropriate treatment and help it is quite treatable. He appears to be doing the right thing. All the best to him- hopefully all of us can cut him the break he deserves and welcome him back as he gets healthy again.

Yeah, I hope he gets his meds and gets better soon, with that being said, I agree this was handled all wrong by Shawn and his agent from the beginning, I understand that when it comes to ones health, even mental health, you have to be selfish....but selfish to a point....he has to know how much he means to a whole bunch of people (family, teamates, FO, fans) and to keep almost all of them in the dark this long is wrong.....I realize it might be embarrassing(sp?) for a big, tough guy to be going through something not physical, but mental, but if he was embarrased, why come out with it now?? Maybe some of the people he kept in the dark could have helped him get through this?!? Anyway, love ya Shawn, get better, keep us updated, keep your chin up.....lots of people pulling for you, not just as a football player, but as a person....good luck...

I'm sure this is something serious, but its hard to feel sorry for him. What Shawn needs to do is take a walk in the life of people making near minimum wage and see how hard life can really be. I, fortunately, am not in this predicament, but know people that are. If he sees this and sees how lucky he has it, it'll probably improve his mood tremendously.

Anyone who writes about "being depressed" in conjunction with what Andrews is fighting - "depression," should really shut up. He is doing a very smart thing in staying away if he is suffering from depression. If he gets it treated right, he'll be fine. If not, he's correct in stating that he could get hurt or hurt someone. It has nothing to do with the heat, and he clearly knows that it will cost him some serious money. So, the haters had better mind themselves, because this is the monkey on the back of a lot of people who choose not to deal with it. Good for Shawn Andrews that he is willing to do so - it's hard when you're not a public figure. It must be really hard when you are.

People who don't understand depression (ie. Wow....I wouldn't be depressed if I had his money! -or- Gee.....he needs to see what it's like to work for minimum wage if he wants to be depressed!) are usually the ones who don't have a brain complex enough to experience depression. It's a medical condition, like cancer. Do people with cancer (non-self inflicted disease) need to see how a homeless meth addict (self inflicted disease) lives so that they stop feeling sorry for themselves? Get some perspective, people. And.....get well, Shawn.

This is a serious and deadly illness that people better realize is very real. The fact that ANDY REID and others are downplaying it is obnoxious. Yes the guy makes zillions but if he had the right advise early instead of the fear that the NFL puts into the players he would have been fine by now. These ignorant "fans" probably feel their lives are much worse off and they probably are and people most likely don't care about their worthless lives either. If Andy Reid and the Eagles are really fining him $15,000 a day for this, and they continue to do this, I will seriously consider turning in my Eagles fandom. It shows you just how emotionally unconnected Reid and this organization is. This is a real illness that you don't ever "get over" you just learn how to deal with it a lot better. Depression is just as serious of an illness as anything else. It can and will leave a person debilitated. Shawn my thoughts and prayers are with you. Oh and last year I began to notice that Shawn's behavior showed sensitivity during interviews .. not that everyone who is sensitive or over-sensitive is prone to depression, but it's a sign. If I saw it on the Tube, I was wondering if friends on the field or office also sensed something. Give him time .. he may need to be on mediciation.

phillyrealist, I get your point. I posted earlier that this is really unusual behavior to bash and fine and employee for what is accepted today as a genuinely serious mental health condition. Because of all their talk, I can only conclude that Andy Reid et al are: (1) Totally oblivious to the problems of depression or (2) Do not believe his depression was keeping him from camp. Something's not right here. Either scenario speaks volumes. A piece of the story is missing.

The Eagles made this worse by not being more forthcoming. I can understand not wanting to publicize depression unless the player was ready, but "personal reasons" covers a lot of ground. They could have said "health issues" which would have included mental health. The people would not have been thinking the guy was just lazy and out of shape. The Eagles just have to get over this "national security" mentality. It's just football, folks.

I am not a football fan, and I really have never heard of this man before. But I have been through depression and I can tell you, it can strike anybody--young, old, black, white, rich, poor--it doesn't matter. It has NOTHING to do with your occupation or how much money you make and it is NOT funny or something to be mocked. Depression is believed to have an actual PHYSICAL cause, theorized to be a chemical imbalance in the brain. Medications usually help tremendously. I know if it weren't for Prozac, I wouldn't be here writing this. So all of you making fun and sarcastically asking what somebody like Mr. Andrews would have to be depressed about, don't. You can't understand depression if you haven't gone through it, and if you haven't, thank God. Believe me, nobody wants to feel bad. Mr. Andrews, I wish you the best in your battle against depression. I will be praying for you. I KNOW what it's like.

It's simple. Shawn mans up to what's going on; class act. Andy Reid, of all people, should know that people's personal lives sometimes affect the team, whether they plan on it or not. Cut they guy a break, give him his fine money back, see that he gets help, and let him lead the fight against depression, as well as leading as a lineman on the field.

Good luck Shawn; I and others I know have battled this, and unless you've been there, you don't know how difficult it is. Sounds like he is doing the right things, and I hope he is successful in dealing with this. There ARE more important things in life than money.

Eagles need this guy, I hope he can get better with proper medication. I say give him the benefit of the doubt at this point to all the people dumping on him. I seen what depression can do, anyone remember Brian Skinner of the Sixers, he was battling the same thing. I think he still is.

Depression is no joke. It has serious physical ramifications that are not imaginary. I give the guy credit for going public.......most 'macho' guys see it as a weakness. I think he showed a lot of courage.

I can't believe he's being fined by the Eagles... that just seems wrong.

Life isn't money, get well soon Big Kid. There are very stupid people in this world, so don't pay them any mind. Unfortunatly there is no medication or therapy for them. My prayers are with you!

Anybody who has the audacity to question the seriousness of depression and its affects on one's everyday life is both ignorant and callous. With mental illness, it's not a matter of curing an illness, but of getting a handle on it and figuring out how to live with it. Best of luck to Shawn and his family as they work through this together.

Good job Les, We all need to be sympathetic for people suffering from depression . It can strike anyone, and Shawn bringing it into the publics eye is not an easy thing to do. It can help in furthering peoples understanding of the nature of mental illness and how everyone is vulnerable. With that said I hope that it is not a play to miss the tougher part of training camp, because that would do a great deal of damage to Shawns reputation.Keep up the great work Les.

Les BowenLes Bowen has covered the Eagles for the Daily News since 2002. Before that, he spent nearly 13 years covering the Flyers. It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent. He, his wife Barbara, and their two sons live in Haddon Township, New Jersey.
