The fro-hawk hairdo now is accented with a dyed-red crest, making Shawn Andrews look like either a rooster that would have to herald the sunrise from a very stout perch, or a woodpecker capable of taking down seqouias

. Underneath it, he still looks like a dominant, All-Pro guard, but Andrews gave no indication yesterday that he is close to returning to that mode. Andrews finally returned to the Eagles from California last week, after several delays caused by unsatisfactory healing progress following his Oct. 21 back surgery by Dr. Robert Watkins.

Andrews has not been placed on injured reserve, but yesterday he said he has not been cleared to do any exercise kore strenuous than lifting 5-pound weights or walking, with just four weeks remaining in the Eagles' season. More troubling, he indicated his back still does not feel right.

The upshot would seem to be what most people expected -- Nick Cole will be the Birds' right guard as they scramble to get back into the playoff picture, in the wake of Max Jean-Gilles' season-ending broken ankle, suffered in Thursday's victory over the Cardinals.

Andrews said that through the Eagles, he booked several return flights that he ended up canceling, as Watkins kept suggesting he stay in Marina del Rey.

"It was just some things he saw in the X-rays and the MRIs, and kind of the way I told him I felt, that he used to gauge it," Andrews said Monday, as his teammates began preparations for this weekend's visit to the Giants.

"You can hope all you want, and I do hope," Andrews said, when asked if he had any hope of playing again this season. Andrews has been out since being injured Week 2 at Dallas. "I don't know what the possibilities are. So I'm back here, working with (head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder) and the guys now, so it's a matter of gettting to that point where I can get out there and push and pull and take some people out."

Not part of Shawn Andrews' dietAndrews, who missed the first 17 days of training camp battling depression, said he recently became a pescetarian -- which apparently has nothing to do with any fan club for the "Goodfellas" and "Home Alone" star, but instead pertains to eating vegetables and fish.

"I'm focusing on today," Andrews said, when asked to assess his chances of returning soon. "I would like to get back out there, but for now I'm just going by the protocol Dr. Watkins, coach (Andy) Reid and Rick Burkholder have set up for me.

"If I can get back out there, that'd be a plus, but if not, then next year."

"My offensive line, they've been struggling, and it's tough to not be able to be here and struggle with them," Andrews said. "If I were them, I'd probably have some kind of feelings toward me, but I can't do anything about the back surgery."

do NFL teams have insurance policys on players not playing because of injurys? Players that don't play shouldn't be paid. I can't imagine ownership paying millions of dollars to headcases & back problem employees unless they are covered by insurance. Andrews is having a year long vacation because of not liking his job, or just plain letting his mental & physical well being go to pot in the off season.

I think he came to the realization that he likes to swing with the other team. It's really messing with him. He's having a hard time dealing with the fact he's gay.

I think he'll be healthy for camp next summer. The effect of his absence this year has been huge. If he was on the field, 3rd and short wouldn't be an issue. But aside from Andrews, the Eagles have some serious retooling to do this offseason, no question.

Amazing how much lack of sympathy we have for people who live with clinical depression.

Matt, back injuries are serious, no matter how minor! Maybe Joe Pesci should slam ya head in car door, see how much ya whine.

The Eagles should cut their losses now with the guy. It is a shame but as good of a player he can be, dude has way too many issues. He's depressed and holds out and then he returns and hurts his back. He speaks now of the gloomy long lasting possibilities that can emanate from back surgery. The Eagles should just flat out release him and move on. They needed help with their O-line this year and this clown was no where to be found. Why subject another season to the same uncertainty. Oh yeah, I know why. They have spent (first round) money on the guy. Sometimes, a team has to bite the bullet and move on. Wishing, will not put Andrews on the field playing the way the Eagles expected him to play. Release him and move on!

I see McNabb in a lot more commericals now, and even one with Dawkins...Perhaps he's actually trying to work on his PR with the city for once. If that's what he's doing, than I give him credit for that... Matt, and if he wouldn't have said anything about his issues, what would you be saying then? At least he was able to admit what was ailing him. You don't think there is more than one player playing that is playing poorly, and refusing to let anyone know about it? Some people have hard lives, even when they have money...believe it or not. PuPu man, I am compulsive about mistakes. I make them a lot, but I will get all over myself when I make them...However, I don't expect anyone to be perfect at their job.

Trainer Rick Burkholder royally blew this one. Go back and read Andy's initial statements, "Shawn's muscle is spasmed so obviously it's not a disc". Yes Andy, it was a disc problem, wasn't it. Who knows what God-forsaken Physical Therapy was tried before a correct diagnosis was made. If this eventually ruins Shawn's career, Burkholder is to blame.

Matt, shut up... you're clueless. Dont post comments if you have no idea what your talking about. He's hands down best guard in the game. Rest him, get him right and make sure hes 100 percent for next year. "Get rid of him" - so F*&^% stupid...

Matt...."fraud?".....did you ever watch the guy on the field. Best guard I've ever seen watching Eagles for last 30 years. The screen pass has not nearly been as effective without him, and that is not even mentioning why in his absence we can't get a yard!

I get the feeling that he has a back injury and is in rehab so that he can get back on the field asap. The sooner the better. Since he's been out, the offensive line, and as a result, the offense, has struggled. Pro Bowl starting offensive linemen are tough to come by. I give the guy alot of credit for having the courage to speak about some private problems that he's dealing with. Players who don't have desire aren't Pro Bowl players. I really wonder about the intteligence of Eagles' fans more than I do about Andrews. You guys sure read a lot into things. Unless you have information that you;d care to share, why would you questions what the guys says? No wonder so many players can't wait ti get out of Philly.

career in jeapardy, yup. But, he's the best guard in the game. So, someone had better get with him.

I feel bad for the guy.....I'm sure he is a competitor, and who would not want to see him back strong next year? I just question Andy's judgement not to put him on IR when there was every reason to think he was done for the year. We could use the roster spot for somebody that can be a blocking back or tight end to use in blocking situations.

I really question his desire to play football anymore... seems to me he uses every excuse to not play. anyways hope he does get back because he is a pro bowl guard when he plays.

Yes, I get that feeling. ACLs are one thing (if I came back from that anyone can) but back injuries: they worry me.

Cut him. He's such a whiny fraud. His back, his depression, his "career threatening" ankle injury the other year. He doesn't want to play football, it's obvious.
