Akers' need for speed

We know this is a football blog, and we know this is not exactly football ... But we thought it provided a little insight into some off-the-field activities of a member of the Eagles.

Eagles kicker David Akers is an avid auto racing fan.

He was the one who organized a visit to Dover International Speedway for his teammates in which a number of Eagles drove the Monster Mile. He invited NASCAR driver Martin Truex to training camp last summer.

Akers was back behind the wheel Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee.

Akers won his celebrity heat in the "Saturday Night Special" race for NASCAR legends and celebrities. That gave his teammate, Harry Gant, a chance to start on the front row but Gant had to make an early pit stop for a mechanical problem. He ran most of the race without a hood on his car.

In case you are wondering, Sterling Marlin led all 35 laps in the main event to win.
