Akers named to All-Decade team

Eagles kicker David Akers was named to the 53-member NFL All-Decade team for the 2000s.

Akers led the NFL in scoring during this past decade with 1,169 points and earned four Pro Bowl berths. He is the Eagles' franchise leader in points scored, field goals and extra points and ranks third on the NFL list behind Adam Vinatieri (42) and Gary Anderson (32) with 30 postseason field goals

"It is obviously a huge honor just to play that length of time in the NFL," Akers said. "To be able to be looked at in that high regard is surreal to me. I couldn't have done it without the Mike Bartrums, the Koy Detmers, the Jon Dorenboses, the Sav Roccas and great offensive lines and coaches helping me along the way. The Eagles have always believed in me and I am truly grateful for that.

“A lot of it goes to the consistency of the team, and of the team having confidence in me, from Mr. Lurie and Andy Reid on down. It keeps your confidence up. I have worked extremely hard over the years and I will continue to do so. I would like to play many more years with the Eagles. That would be a great, great thing."

Akers is among 12 All-Decade team members who will compete in Sunday's Pro Bowl, including Brian Dawkins. The entire team will be announced before the Pro Bowl.

“This is a tremendous honor for me to be recognized as one of the best out of all the safeties who have played in the NFL this decade,” Dawkins said. “To know I’ve been able to do the things I’ve been able to do, with the help of my teammates, to earn a spot on the league’s All-Decade Team means a lot.”

The team is chosen by the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee members. The 2000s will mark the ninth All-Decade team to be selected in NFL history.
