In his position breakdowns of the draft that have run in this blog the last several days, Mike Mayock has made reference to ``3-technique’’ and ``5-technique’’ defensive players.
A few people have e-mailed me and asked for an explanation on exactly what Mayock means when he says that.
So let’s do that, boys and girls.

Chip Kelly was talking about the Eagles' running back situation a few weeks back. He extolled LeSean McCoy, Bryce Brown and even Chris Polk, the 2012 rookie who didn't get a regular-season carry. Kelly didn't mention Dion Lewis.
It probably wasn't a case of Lewis slipping Kelly's mind. Thursday, the Eagles shipped their 2011 fifth-round pick to Cleveland -- still a top destination for Eagles disappointments, apparently, even though GM Tom Heckert is gone -- for the Browns' 2012 sixth-rounder, linebacker Emmanuel Acho.
Acho spent his rookie season on IR with a leg injury. He's 6-1, 238, roughly the size and shape of Akeem Jordan, the veteran linebacker and special teams stalwart the Eagles let slip into free agency. There was a report this week that the team had made an offer to Jordan, but the report surfaced as he was visiting the Bengals, so it might have been an effort into enticing Cincinnati into signing him.

So, the NFL Network/NFL.com "Bracketology" promotion voted DeSean Jackson's Dec. 19, 2010 walkoff punt return against the Giants the greatest play in NFL history.
This is ridiculous, of course. Jackson's touchdown was an amazing end to an incredible comeback, but it didn't define an era like the "Immaculate Reception" in the '70s or "The Catch" in the '80s. The Eagles failed to win another game in the 2010 season and have since sunk to the bottom of the NFL. Among Eagles fans over 40, that 2010 play probably doesn't resonate more than the original Herman Edwards "Miracle at the Meadowlands" of 1978.
But lots of fans aren't over 40, and they are the fans who vote in online polls. Also, I think Eagles fans decided they might as well win something this year, and seized on the "Bracketology" promotion.

For the 12th straight year, NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock will break down each of the positions in the draft for the Daily News, providing his assessment of the best player at each position, as well as his top riser and sleeper.
Mayock, 54, resides in Newtown Square and is a graduate of the Haverford School. He was a tenth-round pick of the Steelers in 1981 and played two seasons with the Giants (1982-83).
I'll run his assessments in the days leading up to the April 25 draft. Today: the tight ends and running backs:
