BETHLEHEM -- After the draft and free agency, it was hard to see how Joe Mays fit into the Eagles' crowded linebacking picture.

Turns out he didn't.

The Eagles traded Mays to the Denver Broncos for former Arizona Cardinals running back J.J. Arrington, a team source confirmed to the Daily News. If Arrington does not make the team, the Eagles will receive a sixth-round pick in 2012.

Arrington would have been a really exciting pickup a few years ago, when he looked like a pass-catching back with Brian Westbrook-type potential. But microfracture surgery on his right knee last year changed that picture drastically.

Arrington, who didn't play last season, was quoted this week as saying his knee is "getting better every day," but the Broncos hadn't started hitting yet, which Denver coaches said would be a big hurdle.

An Eagles source said Arrington still has to pass a physical.

Arrington (5-9, 212) was the 44th player taken in the 2005 draft, from Cal. Mays was a sixth-round pick in 2008 from North Dakota State.

The Eagles had high hopes for Mays, but he flubbed a chance at the middle linebacking job and faded into the margins.
Arrington played a prominent role on the Cardinals team that defeated the Eagles in the NFC title game after the 2008 season. His knee started bothering him right after the Super Bowl loss to the Steelers.

As I sit here reading this, I just have to snicker and shake my head. Why another running back? Why another player with a medical history? Why does AR insist on picking up these medical rejects? I Am Depressed (sorry Wolfie, I had to use it here).

Wow! If Joe Mays can be traded, anyone can be traded. He was a fan favorite becuase he made a tackle or two in preseason and now he's traded for extremely damaged goods.

i realized in life that if you put enough energy into a disappointing outcome, it's bound to manifest. Why not hope for the best? It's not like the trade isn't complete already. I'm sure it was a reason for the move. Positive energy peeps! I'm so ready for my eaglesssss!!!!

I see Joe Banner, depressed, in bed, eating a tube of cookie dough and pausing "Sleepless in Seattle" while he negotiates a trade, any trade, just to erase the painful memory of the Phillies making a front page splash for Oswalt.

The Eagles were going to cut Mays anyway.. Why not get a 6th round pick.. JJ will be cut and we will get the 6th round pick in 2012,,

mays was not needed anyway. the birds will hopefully take the extra draft pick then use it on draft day to move up a few spots. don't forget we always find a way every year to end up with plenty of picks so the glass is half full. come on week 1. kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick off already!

Mays was a physical specimen but it just didn't translate to the field. Arrington is done, but we got another 6th rounder to fail with
