Lurie: Reid is the 'epitome of what you're looking for'

Extending Reid the right move?
Yes
No

UPDATED:

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie termed Andy Reid, "in every way, the epitome of what you're looking for," during a news conference to announce that Reid has agreed to a 3-year extension that will keep him with the Eagles through 2013.

Terms were not disclosed, but a league source said Reid, also the vice president of football operations, will make between $5 million and $6 million per year, making him among the three highest paid coaches in the league.

"I'm just a piece of the puzzle," Reid said. "By my waist size, I'm a big piece, but in reality, I'm just a piece of the puzzle."

Lurie said preseason discussions pointed toward Reid wanting an extension. "It was inevitable. There was no point waiting," Lurie said.

He called the extension "a great message to everyone in the organization, particularly the players."

“Our No. 1 priority by far is to win a Super Bowl,” Lurie said. “One of the reasons for the contract is the obsession and prioritization of that.”

EARLIER:

Now that the three-year Andy Reid contract extension has been announced -- with a press conference pending at NovaCare at 11:30 this morning -- it will be interesting to see what happens with other organizational key figures. Many have only been signed through 2010, as Reid was before this new pact was complete.

When the Eagles added money to Donovan McNabb's deal last June without adding years, that was part of the explanation from the McNabb camp -- "Hey, Andy Reid is only signed for two more years." The implication was that perhaps ownership wasn't willing to commit to the Reid-McNabb combo past 2010, and also maybe that McNabb would not want to be here without Reid.

The Eagles' offensive and defensive coordinators, Marty Mornhinweg and Sean McDermott, and general manager Tom Heckert also are signed only through 2010. The past few offseasons, there have been hints that perhaps the Eagles felt it would be acceptable for Heckert to move on to another organization, with Joe Banner protege Howie Roseman steadily gaining stature. Roseman currently is vice president of player personnel. His contract status is not known.

In 11 seasons, Reid's teams are 105-66-1, 10-7 in the playoffs. They have earned seven playoff berths and seem to be in position to win an eighth this year. The Reid-Era Eagles have appeared in five NFC Championship Games, though they have won just one, and then lost Super Bowl XXXIX. Reid is the NFL's second longest-tenured head coach, behind Tennessee's Jeff Fisher, at 16 seasons.

*

The Eagles also announced that they have signed fullback Joel Gamble to the practice squad and re-signed wide receiver Jordan Norwood to the practice squad. Norwood was on the 53-man roster and made his NFL debut against Atlanta on Sunday, but was released Monday to make room for returning cornerback Joselio Hanson.

Gamble has spent time in both the Arena Football League 2 and the American Indoor Football Association, most recently playing for the AIFA’s DC Armor in June 2009. A four-year letterman, Gamble was a tight end at Shippensburg and has played fullback and linebacker professionally.

the man's legacy is consistency and winning. Bash him, question his play calling - but recognize he is simply the winning-est coach in Philadelphia Eagles history. Ask teams like Oakland, Buffalo, Cleveland, etc - if they'd take Andy Reid - be proud of what he has done for this organization. Like so many others, he will be missed when he is gone from our scene.

No one really cares what happens upstairs...As far as Don. If he does not win this year or the next he is out. No question about that. Kolb's time is very soon. They want to see what this kid can do full time. Andy is being extended partly because they want to keep the same system in place that Kolb has learned over the last three seasons. I think McNabb is gone either way honestly...

sima: I'm inclined to agree with you. I think Kolb could get a shot next year unless the team wins it all. I wouldn't be surprised to see the team try to trade Vick for a pick and use it to draft another QB prospect. In this league you can never have enough depth at any position, especially QB.

I think Andy Reid is a good coach. His record clearly shows that. Ask yourself though, can Andy Reid win us a Superbowl? If you are content with getting to the playoffs and maybe to an NFC Championship then this is your coach, but he doesn't seem to be able to win the big game. Let's face it, the time we got to the Superbowl it was because JJ's defense stopped Vick. Would the Oakland, Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroits love to have Reid, sure, but they are losing clubs. We are a winning organization that rarely wins anything and its not for a lack of talent. Why not bring in a new coach with so many young players on our team that could be molded into a great team?

Sign McNabb and Jackson for 5 year term and focus on defense. Some individuals can't get it in their head that Kolb is a career backup QB at best. He could not beat out AJ Feeley for 3 years.

With some of the QB starved teams out there, Vick could probably fetch a 2nd round pick, esp. if he shows he can still play. And yeah sima, I fully agree. As for the Reid deal, yeah, he is the winningest coach in team history and all but 3 or 4 of the current coaches in the league would love to have his resume, but I honestly think we will see more of the same for the next three-four years, and that is a team tht will make the playoffs, but won't advance further than the NFC championship game. Along with all of the mis-management during the games and the pass, pass, pass tendencies as well.

I'm your typical AR basher because his gameday coaching and playcalling drive me crazy. However, I must say this; it's kind of nice being in the mix EVERY SINGLE YEAR. I remember the old days of Campbell, Kotite, and Rhodes. Knowing your team doesn't have a chance and just looking forward to spoiling the Cowboy's chances is a far cry from Championship games and playoffs every year. I never thought I'd say this but...GOOD MOVE.

Jeff Fisher has never won a Super Bowl, yet he's a name the WIP callers always throw out there. Eagles fans are easily the dumbest of the 4 sports in Philadelphia.

As long as the Eagles have Reid as Head Coach, they will consider a season successful if all they do is make it to the playoffs. That is not success. Success is winning it all, which they won't do with Reid and McNabb.

Extending Reid was the only move to make. The vocal minority will kick and scream as usual in this town, but the proof is right there in the poll numbers. The majority of Eagles fans think it's the right move because they are sane and can see the logic in it(i.e. the birds were not a winning team for the decade before Reid got here, they are now). Those people don't call talk radio shows. Bottom line for the haters: Reid has almost completely transitioned the core of the team and they are well on their way to another playoff appearance. That's why he has a contract extension.

You have to remember that when Laurie, Banner and Reid got together, they were ALL rookies. They built a team that ALMOST won it all, came close but didn't get it done. Now they have there second team in place. With all the winning they have done, haven't they earned the opportunity to see what's going to happen with this new team? Anybody who has been an Eagles fan as long as I (45+ years) knows how bad things can go wrong with bad owenership and coaching. We have a good owner, good GM and good coach and I feel they should be given the opportunity to see if this second team can get it done.

"Would the Oakland, Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroits love to have Reid, sure, but they are losing clubs. We are a winning organization that rarely wins anything and its not for a lack of talent." The point is those teams are losing clubs because they don't have a coach like Reid. The Eagles were as bad as them for the decade before Reid came. He's also the director of player personnel, so it's him that's brought all this talent to the Eagles team.

Reid's record since the 2004 SB loss: 54% winning percentage, 1 division championship (last year when they got very lucky and lots of help), 0 conference championships, 0 SB's. 5 years of inconsistent play. 10 years of being out-coached in big games. You want 3 morre years of this? Not good enough!

Definitely a good move. Sure, Reid has some flaws. His stubborness, abandoning the run on occasion, etc. But every coach has some flaws. The bottom line, is that we've been in contention almost every year. 10-7 in the playoffs is very impressive. We have one of the better coaches in the league and I'm glad we will have him here longer.

McNabb will be Eagles for another 5 years or more. Like it or not, there are no better options than McNabb. Manning and Brady are not up for trade, we can look into Bree's after he actually wins more than one playoff game; he has not done that in 9 years.

Andy Reid is the best coach in Eagles history and only Bill Belichick can equal his winning percentage over their careers (They're tied.)They've made the playoffs 7 times each, but Belichick has coached 4 more years than Reid.Bill B's personality makes AR seem like a Dale Carnegie spokesman.Would you rather have Tom the tantrum Coughlin because he won a Superbowl? Count your blessings. I'll take Reid over any active coach out there. Our QB is another story, but DMac is still one of the best.

Used to be happy getting an additional game at the end of the season. That door has been crossed long ago. Result: 1 super bowl appearance and 4 NFC titles lost. agree with Nimby....front office happy with just making the playoffs, andmaking money along the way......That used to be the philosophy of the Phillies before they became the city's best franchise!

I believe we have seen the best of Andy Reid and Donovan already. We have squeezed all the juice out of these oranges. Both Donovan and Andy are better than most, if that's what satisfies you, but they are not the BEST. I want the best, and I want upper management to want the best. Bring in Bill Cowher, Mike Shanahan,...or a coach that is a proven winner in the big games. I'm tired of good,..I want the best!

salt, you seem to contradict yourself in your post. We are a winning organization? Since when? Oh, that's right, since Reid brought his "system" to the desk of Laurie and Banner and impressed them. I was a season ticket holder for years when we were not a winning organization. Remember, this team has NEVER won a super bowl, not just since Reid got here. And you give JJ all the credit for the super bowl appearance? Then why not get all over JJ for his defense letting NE run the ball down their throat all game. Why does the defense get all the praise here but NEVER the blame. And why doesn't Andy get credit for hiring (and keeping) JJ? Lastly, you say our not winning is not due to lack of talent. Ask yourself this, who picks the talent? You like the '09 draft class so far?

They really need to upgrade Offensive and Defensive Coordinators. McDermott might be ready in 5 years... Building a contending team and finding a competent Quarterback takes great skill, which Reid has shown. Winning the Super Bowl with one-game playoffs is mostly luck.

noooooooo....the Eagles will never win a Super Bowl with Reid as coach.. The uneducated fan will think it was McNabb's fault but nothing could be further from the truth. If other coaches could win Super Bowls with guys named Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, Mark Rypien. Jeff Hostetler, Doug Williams, Phil Simms, and Jim McMahon (twice), there is no reason why Reid couldn't do it. He has not given McNabb the receivers, line protection or the PLAYS win the big one and he never will. He doesn't even have his own house in order!

At least it is only for 3 yrs. That is a tacit endorsement at best. I worried that they would sign him for another 10 years. At least this way, if Reid can't get over the hump, they can let him go and only eat a year or two.

@sla6yer, the poll numbers are proof of nothing...it's not a scientific poll. Andy Reid is at best a good coach, but he can't win the big one. 1-5 is his record in games we care about (NFC championships and superbowls). As for CLE, DET...they are clubs looking to win 8 games and call it a success. Let's ship Andy there and sign Shanahan or Cohwer. Sometimes a new coach is what it took to get a team over the top. Look at Gruden in Tampa Bay. Hell, I wish we took Gruden in. I'm already rooting against this 2009 squad because of Dawkins and the signing of conVick. It's going to be really hard to get back on next year..

Why didn't they wait til the end of the season. Now the Eagles are going to lose the next 3 or 4 games. This is so stupid. We never won a Super Bowl but yet Andy get an extension and we going to hear it again and again, next year, next year, next year. I wish we could get another owner, since Lurie has a brain of a 5 years old.

It was a done deal a long time ago...Jeffery's goal of consistantly selling seats, merchandise and super boxes coupled with the continual appreciation of his franchise makes his goal of making money a success......BUT this just rewards failure...... "IF" AND I DO MEAN "IF" THE MAIN GOAL of this fanchise is to WIN the Super Bowl then he has awarded the man who has failed in achieving that goal for 11 years...YOU decide.....BUT if THE goal is winning it all....Jeff, Joe and Andy have failed.....If you just want to make the playoffs every year and have Joe continue to count Jeffery's money....than you all got your wish.....if "in the mix" is your goal....be happy....but "IF" a ring is the goal...then cry with me.....bottom line IS, if you are not the lead dog then you are constianly looking at someone's behind.....Count the teams who have won Super Bowls since he has been here.....There are a lot of different names and some are from the NFC East......Check it out....Either you want to WIN IT ALL or you are happy with 3 more years of "I'll take responsibilty for that" "I have to do a better job" and "I'll correct that"....Hollow words after 11 years....I hope I am forced to eat my words but history says that a bet on my side of the discussion is a winner......GO Birds

This was a done deal before training camp. Going with youth on the O signaled that an extension was going to happen regardless of this season's outcome. An incredibly soft NFC has made it easier to do the deal now.

The Eagles are built to beat bad teams, and because they are good enough to do that consistently, and because there are SO MANY bad teams in the NFL, Reid has a good overall record. I'd like to see Andy's record against play-off and championship caliber teams. My guess it is sub-.500. Everyone likes to say that he "wins" but does beating Tampa, Washington, Atlanta, etc, mean anyting? This team can't beat good teams consistently enough to win a superbowl, and that's all I care about.

Blah, blah, blah, haters. You haven't got a clue. How long did it take Cower (who y'all want so badly) to win a SB in Pittsburgh? It was more than 10 years! Fisher hasn't won one yet. Andy doesn't tell you everything he's got planned? Well, why would he? Who gives a damn about what you think? He wants to win ball games, not placate a bunch of whining fans and reporters. He keeps his information in-house, which is the only good business (and personnel) decision. This was a very good move by Eagles management. Those of you saying we're satisfied with a mediocre team don't know what a mediocre team is! Fire Andy, and you'll find out.

Good for Andy, good for the Eagles and great for the fans. Yes, I'm as frustrated at times with Reid's game decisions, but he has brought to this city of perenial doormats the greatest stretch of Eagles football in my lifetime. He deserves another chance and another after that. Would still be shy of Cowers 14 yrs to get his ring. Consistency, respect, wins, leadership, playoff success. I want a SB but let it be with AR!!

I don't like this offense I never have, Not when they ran it in SF or anywhere else. However AR wins games and we are consistently in the play offs. It's a smart move for the owner. A winning team fills seats and sells merchandise. I think Donovan is one of the all time greats. I hate to see people bashing him. He is certainly one of the best we have ever seen here in Philly. I agree with Seed's evaluation of Kolb he will never be any more than a back up. he wouldn't start elsewhere in the league why woulf you think he could handle the load here?

Andy is an excellent coach and knows how to put together a winning product. My only complaint over the years is that they have the same three problems every season: Running the ball, scoring TDs in the red zone and managing the clock. It's ok to have problems as long as you aren't fixing the same problems every season. I hope they can come up with a solution, and watching them win a few games in the final moments is a good start...time will tell, and that time has now been extended three years. Good luck coach Reid!

I love how all the haters can bash Andy Reid, yet none can come up with a better alternative at head coach? If you really want him gone at least suggest an alternative!

Good decision to extend Reid. Best coach in Eagles history, and one of the best in the league. His record speaks for itself. For his detractors, keep in mind that the Eagles overachieved to get to the NFC championship in several of those years (e.g. 2003 and 2008). I don't think it makes any sense for this organization to start over when they are one of the best teams in the league, and have a realistic shot to win the Superbowl every year.

Clearly the Eagles don't want to win the SB after all winning it doesn't correlate with higher ticket prices and merchandise sales, TV revenue, etc. The haters are nitwits all of them.

Jefery's money machine is intact.....and that IS HIS ONLY GOAL...."IF" his main goal was to win a Lombardy Trophy he would not extend the man who has failed at this for 11 years......but since it is only about money he could care less about winning it all.....and for all those who think different....11 years and NO SB...that is a fact and it is indisputable.....and for those who spout the Bill Cowher story...did you forget the Jon Gruden Story (taking over from Dungy and beating us to win a SB) and where does it say that letting andy go means you hire a guy like kotite......either your main goal is winning it all or you are jsut a pretender.....and your complacent attitude shows you are willing "to settle".......think of it this way....the Birds are on the 3 yard line and you have four downs to score.....so you settle for the field goal or do you only go for the TD......this is just the typical eagle red zone attitude.....afraid to score....:afraid to fail".....Michael, Magic, Bird, AI, Charles, Clarke, Rose, Rollins, Carlton, JJ, Ali, and many others who we love...pput it all out there every time and were consumed with winning......so you now know who you are.....a Champion or a "settler".....it is always up to you......but winners "hate" losing and the Eagles have lost the only prize they are playing for for 11 years

Most people forget that it took Bill Cowher 14 seasons to get a Lombardi. Reid is in his 11th season. Great signing, this guy is a winner, maddening at times, but a winner nonetheless.

I too remember and don't want to return to the old days before AR. I could care less about what AR says in his press conferences and even less if some in the media(WIP)don't like what he decides to tell them or not. And I'm not impressed with the critism on here that is often a repeat of WIP's agenda. While AR's clock management is often questionable, there's no denying that his teams play their best ball in December (often over-achieving) to make the playoffs. That ability to draw blood from stone, so to speak, makes AR valuable. No super bowl yet, but I still believe in AR (warts and all). Go Birds.

Absolutely the right move. Andy Reid and his staff have been consistent. Players like Keith Byars & Westbrook became stars because of Reid's consistent and effective use of the west coast offense. He hasn't waivered. The only inconsistency lies in the players on the field on any given Sunday. Sure, there's been bad play calling here and there, but find me any NFL head coach that hasn't been guilty of that. I applaud Jeffrey Lurie's decision. Go Birds!

I am ok with Reid Staying, its Marty that has to go!!! He is the idiot that can not find consistency and balance. He scripts plays then never goes back to the ones that work. He forgets about players (Avant, Celek) as the games go on, he drives me crazy!! Keep reid, get rid of Marty Moose!!

hey seed, when kolb get the reins of this offense he will succeed just like mcnabb has. When he was given his chance to shine early this yr, he produced. Unfortunately, he may being growing tired of waiting his turn and choose to move on. I hope not, but the kid can play. seed, on the other hand has no clue. The team needs to focus on ther youth, Mcnabb will be elsewhere in 2010. Too many injuries this yr and shuffling of the O-line will not get them past the saints or vikings.

I'm really disappointed! Reid is never going to win a Super Bowl. While they are no where near as pathetic as the chairman of Comcast Spectacor (Sixer's & Flyers who will not when again in near future)the Eagles are content with bumbling through one season after another, just coming close. Maybe we win one in 2014!

So much can happen in football to keep you from winning the Super Bowl- injuries or just the way the ball bounces. All you can do is be one of those three or four teams in position to win every year, and he has done that. (Hell, Neither Steve Carlton, or Tom Seaver ever pitched a no hitter, yet they were still the best pitchers of their era)

I'm gonna put it like this, if you beat the Giants on sunday night football and have a first place team (because the chargers will crush the cowboys) I'll support you, but if you lose and disgrace us on national tv, I'll tell you you suck and should be fired, and im positive I'm speaking on behalf of the entire tri-state region.

jtcigar.. there are actually 4 superbowl winning coaches available, but in three cases, the teams they won for didn't want them, so why would we? The fourth took 14 years to win a superbowl.

Lets see. Kotite's winning percentage with the Eageles is .563 while Reid's is .613........That's a difference of 5% or 0.8 more wins per season with Reid. Just becuase you are squeaking by Rich Kotite doesn't mean your the best coach in Eagles history. That Title is disrespectful of those that actually won the city a championship. It means Reid and Company are best at creating an illusion of a potential super bowl win. Lurie is an entertainer and he is entertaining the dellusioned fans who are nothing more than tools that believe his rhetoric. "Epitome of a Coach??" Is Lurie for real?? Would you actually look at Reid and put his picture in the dictionary next to coach?

Silent majority here speaking with a voice of reason. Do some of you really think the Eagles are content with just reaching the playoffs as you have stated here? They make the playoffs and then say to each other "OK, we're in. Now we can stop preparing." That is ridiculous. You have to make the playoffs to have a shot at winning the Super Bowl. Just like any tournament, it takes a lotta skill and a little luck to win it all. We just haven't had our turn yet. AR gives us the best chance.

Congratulations Andy! The large piece of pie has done a great job. Eight wins at this point with a banged up O line in the east is impressive. The o line that lost our "big nasty" Jon and Tra who guarded Donovan's back for so long. Everybody, especially the rookies have really played well. The defense, doing whatever is called upon to do. This D has lost a great coach and it's main leader in Dawkins. Andy, most Eagle fans know you have the Eagles on course to win it all. You've always given the team a chance to grab the ring, it's close now go get it. If I had one request it's "please pound the rock".

Bobbyd24 is correct we do have some of the dumbest sports fans in the country. With Mcnabb and Reid we win make the playoffs and are 1 play away from a superbowl or a superbowl when people still cheer for the cowboys who have not won a playoff game in 13 years, the former coach of the cowboys thinks the Eagles are going to win it all every year the Eagles are a top team always in the mix how about we cheer for them and stop waiting for them to fall on their faces can we try that for once?

robert-Yes, I would rather lay my money down on Eagles products knowing we could be good every year. Do you think I would rather be a Baltimore or Pittsburgh fan right now? Yeah being a Pittsburg fan would have been nice, last year, but where are they right now? I'm not implying being a bandwagon fan, but think man. It would baffle me to be a NY fan right now and wonder why our record is the way it is. Are you kidding me? They have so much talent on that defense no one should be scoring more than 10 points a game. Why does Dallas have all those rings, all that current talent, but still only have an 8-4 record? We have had two yeas worth of injuries, yet we are tied for 1st place. Sheldon Brown is still in danger of getting burned b/c of his hamstring...Yes, some of Reid's playcalling, playclock, and red flag management can be annoying, but no coach is perfect...I'll take being good and having a chance every year, than knowing we will win one year, and average the rest...

What a joke? Andy Reid rewarded for what? Worst game manager in the NFL, can't win the big game TO GET to the big game, both his sons in jail, signing a dog killer, groundhog day play calling with 75% passing? The Great Enabler Jeff Lurie strikes again and saddles true Eagles fans with purgatorial Andy Reid for the next 3 years.

Perspective: Only one team wins it all each year, and we haven't done it since 1960. 2010 will be forty years without a championship. Do you really think firing Reid and replacing Donovan with Kolb is the answer? I won't watch another 10 years of Marion Campbell, Rich Kotite, Ray Rhodes football, so thanks Jeff and Joe!

This is absolutely NOT a good decision. Andy Reid is an inadequate game day coach. He cannot handle a 2 minute offense for starters. How many times a game in the last 2 minutes of the half do we see Donovan McNabb holding his hands in the air looking at the sideline waiting for a play to get into him? He uses his timeouts WAYYY too early in games so he doesn't have them when he needs them. He cannot make in game adjustments. For 10 years, he relied on Jim Johnson's defense and McNabb making plays with lousy receivers (until recently) and that was how he won games. Lurie and Banner have pretty much damned this team to not win a Super Bowl til after the year 2014, unless the quarterback regains some of his younger days playmaking ability and does it this year.

If they are going to keep Dumb, they need to get rid of Dumber. Reid + McNabb = No Super Bowl. Don't know if Kobb is the answer, but we know that McNabb will choke at the critical moment, so let's move on. Otherwise, second best -- at best -- is what you get. Lurie needs to force Reid to hire a good bench coach, like the Phillies brass made Charley do.

Whatever happened to supporting your team? When all we had was Staley everyone complained about no pass offense, now we can air it out. Who are any of us to question people that are far more versed in the subject than any of us are? At some point it will all come together. What matters most is when is it happening and will it last long enough for us to win a Superbowl? It's luck people. Teams get hot, they match up good with the teams they are playing. They should want to win a Super bowl for this city, not in spite of it. Quit yer whining and be an Eagles Fan, passionate and faithful regardless. It's about that just as much as it is about mean defenses and smash up running games.

Hey CA Eagls fan, Keith Byers played under Buddy, not Reid; you are off a few years. If Reid's record is so great, consider this, how many NFC East teams have won the Super Bowl in Reid's tenure here? 1- NFC East has not been that good during Reid's time here (Dallas hasn't even made playoffs), which helps make Reid look better than he is in Eagles history.
