Nick Foles insists that the race to be the Eagles' starting quarterback this season does not have to go to the swift.

On the same day that the Eagles brought potential first-round quarterback Geno Smith in for a NovaCare visit, Nick Foles met with reporters Wednesday and made it clear that he thinks he can be the team’s starting quarterback next season, foot-speed be damned.
"Whoever’s the quarterback of your team, you build your offense around them,’’ Foles said. "I feel like I can go in and run anything. I’m here to compete. Everybody’s here to achieve the same goal and that’s to win.’’
Because Chip Kelly ran a read-option offense at Oregon, and because Foles doesn’t have the speed to run the read-option, it has been assumed he will be the odd man out when Kelly decides on a starting quarterback.
Michael Vick? Maybe. Dennis Dixon? Maybe. Geno Smith or EJ Manuel or Matt Scott? Maybe.
Foles? Uh, probably not.
But Foles isn’t buying it.
"There’s different kinds of quarterbacks,’’ he said. "You play to the strength of whoever your quarterback is."
Andy Reid, the guy who drafted Foles last year, is gone, replaced by Kelly. But Kelly is familiar with Foles from having coached against him in college. He knows what he can do and can’t do.
"I understood when I got here that (pro football) is a business,’’ Foles said. "I’ve known Chip. I knew him in college. Played against him several times. He knows me well. He’s studied me. So there was a relationship. It’s not like I’m going into a situation where we don’t even know who each other is.
"I feel comfortable. I’m excited Excited for the opportunity to compete.’’

- Foles had no offensive line in college or last year in the Pros and still stood tall, completed passes and limited turnovers. Anyone remember Troy Aikmen losing game after game at the beginning of his career. He only thrived when you built around him.
How much of an upgrade would Geno Smith be over Foles??? Minimal if at all. How much of an upgrade would Joekel or Fisher be at RT? Significant. Draft EJ Manuel or Scott later for security. Offensive lines make great QBs, RB, WR.— Taxpayer Leaving City

He can't be worse than Sanchez.— verve- This is an interesting article. Kelly has spoken about Foles before and it has been very positive. Foles did a pretty good job last season in some very tough circumstances. I am not sure what Kelly intends to do with the offense, but if there is a healthy dose of running, and they give Foles some protection, he could turn out to be a good NFL QB. He looked like a gamer to me, and didn't quit. He didn't point fingers at anyone, or make excuses. Team mates love a QB who takes responsibility and shares credit. I think the kid got off to a good start and I am not sure they can do any better than him no matter what QB they might take in this draft.— Paul SoTX

He's smart enough to play to his teams strenghts something Reid lost long ago. And stop with the Vick talk. Vick should have been cut long ago. No one else wants him. Bottom Line all the QB have to compete if Nick wins and becomes the starter... he becomes my guy... (HTML deleted)— trinieagle - Foles could have put an end to Mike Vick's stay in Phila when he was handed the QB responsibilities over Trent Edwards last year. He had 6 chances to establish is superiority over the position. He was in a position to cut down and, or eliminate turnovers from the QB spot. He was positioned to charge the Eagles on scoring drives and come from behind victories similar to the efforts produced by other Rookie Quarterbacks in the NFL last year.
At every opportunity Foles had to distinguish himself from the other Eagles Quarterbacks on the rosters he did not produce. To continue to lobby for another go at the position is more than some of you are willing to give the other Quarterback in Phila.
