Andy Gets His QB, and It Isn't Foles

POSTED: Wednesday, February 27, 2013, 2:11 PM

The team most of us considered the main suitor for Nick Foles went in another direction Wednesday.

Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs agreed in principle to a trade with the 49ers for quarterback Alex Smith, FoxSports.com reported. The 49ers will get Kansas City's second-round selection this April, 34th overall, and a conditional 2014 pick. The trade can't be official until free agency starts March 12.

This development could mean the Eagles were not just posturing, and really do want to hold onto Foles, at least until Reid's successor, Chip Kelly, gets a look at last year's rookie QB on the practice field. The Chiefs did ask the Eagles about trading for Foles, and were told last week that the Birds weren't ready to trade him.

If the Chiefs had been scouting out, say, a draft weekend move, last week might have been a prelude to more serious bargaining. But if they have already traded for Smith, the Chiefs clearly were ready to get down to business right away when they contacted the Eagles. Reid left the Eagles on excellent terms; there is no reason why the sides would have misunderstood each other. If Reid made it clear he was looking to make a deal now, and the Eagles said "no thanks," that would seem to mean they are keeping Foles.

It also could mean the Chiefs weren't willing to trade the 34th pick in the draft for Foles, who was the 88th selection last year, and that the Eagles weren't willing to trade Foles for what they were offered. Smith, the first overall pick in 2005, has a much more extensive resume.

In any case, Reid is the only NFL decision-maker who definitely sees Foles as a viable starting QB, and Reid now has a QB. So what's the remaining market for Foles, if he is available? In Jacksonville, as we've noted, Gus Bradley hired Frank Scelfo, Foles' University of Arizona quarterbacks coach and closest advisor, to coach the Jags' QBs. But the immediate goal there is to develop Baine Gabbert, whom Jacksonville took 10th overall two years ago. The Jags might be interested in Foles next year, if Gabbert flunks what looks to be his final chance to establish himself as a starter, but for now, there is no indication anyone else will quarterback Jacksonville in 2013.

Foles might not have shown enough in his six 2012 starts to entice a strong trade package from any team that doesn't have someone who knows him well on its staff.

Why didn't Reid want to trade for his hero Vick?

We don't need a QB. There is plenty of O-line and D-line talent that the Birds need to grab early. I want to see what Foles can do under a new coach. You have to give him a chance to see what he can do with an improved O-line. And I actually like EJ Manuel as a possible QB pick in the 3rd round; he might be a sleeper.

There will be a QB in the 3rd round, who is over 6ft. and can run the option. He may come from a small school, but he will be there if...Chip wants to simply stick with the 3 guys he has and drops Trent. Put the choice on the stand by squad and train him. By then, the 2013 will be over and the Eagles will not make the PO's and Chip can see if Dixon, Foles or this 3rd guy can be the QB's.

This is why fans are sold on the fact that Foles cannot play !!!
Out of Les' own mouth, no one in the NFL thinks that Nicky boy can play a lick. NO ONE !!!! Except the idiots in Philly...

Buffalo, The Jets, the Jags, The Cards, The Bills, Tampa may all be interested. Additionally teams with aging Vets like Denver and Oakland may be interested. Cleveland just invested a #1 so not likely. Even NE if they didn't have Mallett. Foles doesn't have to be trade to be an immediate starter.

It mes down to who is interested and how badly the Eagles need that extra pick Foles would bring. Now that some of the higher draft picks are showing health concerns trading down may be another option in the draft. If Kelly has his eyes on a QB Foles will probably be gone [not my choice] and if he does use his #2 on a QB that means he probably can't go OL in the first either. With that D investing the top 2 picks on O would be risky...unless they go FA for DL or OL. Lots of options...round and round she goes...

Hindsight, so Foles is no good but good enough to get to the championship game like Smith? Interesting.

Andy Reid chose Alex Smith over Geno smith. Bet if Reid was still working for Lurie he would have been forced to take Geno Smith.

Most Eagles fans live in the parallel crazy universe where Alex Smith is a loser (despite being a top 5 QB last year in every possible statistical metric, traditional or otherwise) and Foles is the greatest QB ever, but was just hampered by a "poor offensive line". It will be huge reality check next year when KC is fighting for a playoff spot while Eagles are 3-13

Reid IMPROVED his QB....but Kelly keeps the same old loser Vick who was 0-6 in Vick's six games....LOL.

Vick was 0-6 in Vick's last six games...but Kelly gives Vick a new $10 million contract for this year....meanwhile Andy Reid greatly IMPROVES his QB position with Alex Smith who was a sensational 19-5 the last two years and makes LESS than the old loser Vick....LOL.

Hanibal: Joeckel or Womack won't be there. KC traded their first round pick for Smith, remember?

well it appears maybe andy never really had true control over personal if not he wouldnt have had a running qb trying to be a pocket passer. he would have had an alex smith type guy instead of vick dont you think? seems like lurie and roseman always wanted the athletic running qb. which is why they were so intent on grabbing chip kelly and his read option. this is why so many years of round pegs in sqaure wholes. kc will make it to the championship game and then lose... time management wont change nor will the play calling doesnt matter how good his players are reid will always be reid. its just now we know it wasnt all on him... ugh y

Reid had final say on personnel. The problem was that Mrs. Roseman's little boy, Howie, has no idea what he is doing and his team of accountants were making personnel recommendations to Reid.
