Kelly Hire Has Link to Scandal

POSTED: Monday, January 21, 2013, 12:59 PM

Can Pat Shurmur fix the Eagles’ offense?
Yes. He will blend in well with Chip Kelly.
No. Critics in Cleveland said he was too conservative.
It’s way too soon to tell.

MOBILE, Ala. --- Wearing Eagles garb at this morning's Senior Bowl weigh-in and sitting with the Birds' scouts was Josh Gibson, Oregon's former assistant director of football operations.

Reports from Oregon over the weekend indicated Gibson was being hired by the Eagles in an unspecified capacity. The Eagles have not confirmed this, or much of anything else about Kelly's staff.

In the summer of 2011, Gibson was implicated as a key figure in an NCAA investigation that could result in sanctions against the Ducks. Gibson was the main contact at Oregon for Will Lyles, a Houston-based "recruiting consultant" who was paid $25,000 for "information" that reportedly did not meet NCAA standards. The implication has been that Lyles was paid to steer players to Oregon.

Kelly, and perhaps more of his mystery staffers, are supposed to be present this afternoon at the South Senior Bowl practice in Fairhope, Ala.

CLARIFICATION: An earlier version of this post referred to reports that Gibson was dismissed by Oregon in 2011 because of the recruiting scandal. He was not. Gibson remained at Oregon until last weekend when Kelly hired him for the Eagles.

watsonmr - Maybe Josh Gibson and Eagles running back coach, soon to be tight end coach, Ted Williams can teach the Phillies how to hit.

We thought that the only clean 1A football program was Penn State. Boy were we wrong. The NCAA is running a semi-pro league and pretending it anyting but. So what.

At the risk of whipping up the wrath of the Paterno haters, exactly when was Penn State placed on probation for accepting money from boosters, engaging in improper recruiting tactics, or allowing academic fraud amongst the athletes?

-Factcheck Interesting info, thanks for contributing. I'd like to see them completely revamp college football programs and the BCS. I like the idea of creating two leagues as suggested, with one that would allow players to be paid. At least at that point you can regulate and administer the league and keep the playing field level. The issue is the dominant schools don't want to lose their current power, and they aren't going to allow it without a major fight. I think it would take a Penn State sized recruiting scandal and DC to get involved before a major change will be considered.

if the NCAA had any actual integrity there might be some concern but the NCAA is just one more corrupt corporate entity trying to regulate another corrupt entity, big time college football.
