Kelly Hire Has Link to Scandal
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
MOBILE, Ala. --- Wearing Eagles garb at this morning's Senior Bowl weigh-in and sitting with the Birds' scouts was Josh Gibson, Oregon's former assistant director of football operations.
Reports from Oregon over the weekend indicated Gibson was being hired by the Eagles in an unspecified capacity. The Eagles have not confirmed this, or much of anything else about Kelly's staff.
In the summer of 2011, Gibson was implicated as a key figure in an NCAA investigation that could result in sanctions against the Ducks. Gibson was the main contact at Oregon for Will Lyles, a Houston-based "recruiting consultant" who was paid $25,000 for "information" that reportedly did not meet NCAA standards. The implication has been that Lyles was paid to steer players to Oregon.
Kelly, and perhaps more of his mystery staffers, are supposed to be present this afternoon at the South Senior Bowl practice in Fairhope, Ala.
CLARIFICATION: An earlier version of this post referred to reports that Gibson was dismissed by Oregon in 2011 because of the recruiting scandal. He was not. Gibson remained at Oregon until last weekend when Kelly hired him for the Eagles.
so what WFChamps- What! Your boy helps recruit (and breaks a few rules in the process). So what, Kelly's supposed to now abandon him?
I don't think so.
Besides, the NCAA, in its entirety, is a hypocrisy. - At the time of this post, 27% of the people think Pat Shurmur will blend well with Chip Kelly.
On what do you based your opinion?
Do 27% of the people actually "know" Shurmur and/or Kelly?
I just don't get it. You known neither, yet you have an opinion as to whether they'll get along.
Okay, here's one . . . would I and Lawrence Rudymore get along? What's the difference. Yo don't know me and L.R. doesn't even exist.
I watched the same thing happen with Kolb. Many thought he would be great (comparing him to Aaron Rodgers). And I kept myself asking what these people what they were basing their opinions on.
As it turns out Kolb is more like Ginger Rogers than Aaron Rodgers.
So, again, I have to ask, "On what????? do you base your opinion?"
C'mon, help me somebody.
While, I'm at it, these polls suck, and that's why I don't answer most of 'em.
Since when did the "newspaper" become a polling station?
And worse, since when did the "news"paper ask the most unintelligible questions known to man?
Ah, I think I've got it . . . since the "news"paper started going out of business . . . and yet, you wonder why? - You right..We dont know. But the question asked "do you think". And I prefer to remain optimistic and say yes I do think . Why? Because Shurmur is calm and conservative, and I believe can help to adapt Kelly to the NFL..Shurmur is mature and experienced. I believe he can help with Foles also. In other words,Kellp adapts well to stiuational football ,but the NFL lil different than coolege..Thats where Shurmur comes in.Just as Kelly has helped Belichek,Shanahan, and Carroll(all made playoffs)..
tommy129 - @tommy129. Good answer.
walt1 - And Lonewolf1, who cares what you think?! Opinions vary for many reasons, none of which you would understand. Get a life.

It shouldnt matter unless you care about college football. Wont be the first or last time these things happen, its the fault of the culture of big time college fball. Students have to commit, coaches dont, they do what they have to do to win, bottom line. peteike- Oh please! The NCAA has tried to put lipstick on that pig of college recruiting for years. The fact is Division I football is a professional minor league for the NFL. Any attempt by the NCAA to make it look like "collegiate athletics" is futile. Get over it. John621
- James Michener wrote as much 40 years ago in his book "Sports in America." His suggestion at that time was to separate college football into two leagues: One league would have semi-pro teams playing under a college brand which didn't pretend to give the athletes a university-degree education, a second league would have high academic requirements and no scholarships or TV revenue. There are certainly exceptions to both sides of college athletes who excel in both areas and still graduate in 4 years, but this is incredibly difficult, as the given sport amounts to a 1/2 to full-time job running at the same time as the academic year.

Anything having to do with the Eagles is scandalous according to Philly.com. And if not, they'll make it a scandal. ej610
this is a story? must be a slow day PSUJAX
Josh Gibson? Who's next, Satchel Paige. watsonmr
It's probably no accident of timing that Kelly is moving to the pros, like Pete Carroll before him. They see the fire started before the rest of us do, and grab their coat. banned
