Birds' Marathon Meeting with Kelly Over
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
The Eagles' lunch meeting with Oregon coach Chip Kelly was initially considered a formality before Kelly's scheduled dinner meeting that was expected to seal Kelly's deal with the Cleveland Browns.
But the Eagles and Kelly met until after midnight, a source close to the situation confirmed. USA Today's Mike Garafalo reported that the nine-hour discussion would not be the end of conversation betwen the team and the 49-year-old coach.
The Eagles are still scheduled to interview Syracuse coach Doug Marrone in Arizona, where they met with Kelly, then are to go to Denver to interview Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. Colts interim coach Bruce Arians and Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley are on deck.
The Eagles have asked for permission to talk to Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, whose team was bounced from the playoffs Saturday by Houston, but the request did not get an immediate response.
Please...not Chip Kelly! Being a Philly native and having lived in the SF Bay Area for the past 12 years, I saw a lot of PAC 10/12 Oregon games. While his offenses have been good for college, it's a mystery if that style can succeed in the NFL. That aside, his defenses have often been far from respectable...in what was often a weak conference. Oh, and one more thing, if you thought Reid could be standoffish...Kelly will drive you crazier with his abrupt non-answers and attitude. Westandeastphillyguy- yea, thats because the players he recruits are TOO SMALL AND GIMMICKY GARBAGE FOR THE NFL. THATS WHY. ITS PATHETIC. Do you thats going to work agaist huge NFL linemen, LB's, and safeties ? The best of the the best in college all on one team, just an average NFL defense, let alone a good NFL defense ? ITS A JOKE. This is how stupid Lurie and the Eagles are. Notice how an actual superbowl winning team like the Bears had a guy go 10-6, they still fire him because they know a chance was needed (insteada of keeping an 8-8 loser for a 14th year) and they are looking at one of the most qualified guys in Ken Whisenhunt. They have literally 0 interest in gimmicks and Chip Kelly, like Lurie And Banner. Those morons arent going to win anything, ever at this rate. ITS PATHETIC. Most SB's in the last 15 years have been won by guys that had some succes as an NFL headacoach in thier first stop, but didnt get it done, and then won the whole thing in thier 2nd stop. Whisenhunt won a SB as OC of the Steelers, and then took a terrible Cardinals franchise to a freaking superbowl. Thier first ever. Having worked with the steelers he knows how to run the freaking ball and is tough smart, and understands defense. He is one of the most qualified guys, but of course Chicago is looking at him while Lurie looking at the next failed gimmick. Jeffrey, please sell the team before you look dumber. Please.
- Dude you are hilarious. Andy Reid is terrible but Whisenhunt is good? You trumpet the Bears for firing Lovie, although they kept him for 9 years (only 3 playoffs)? Your arguments range from Kelly is bad because he only wins with the best/fastest players to Kelly is bad because he never sends any good players to the NFL? I love the enthusiasm for the Birds, but really man...total whack job. It's like someone taught you two new words - pathetic and gimmick - and you have to use them in every sentence. Calm down man. People much smarter than you are running the show. Chip Kelly would be someone to enjoy if you could open your mind a bit. We cannot just give Wilbert the ball 30 times and go to the SB any more.
cdedrick05 - Charlie Garner25, you can't have a girlfriend and must live with your mom. Who with a life has time to write a post like that on a Saturday night. I just came on the site to see if anything new happenned and was like huh? Corey301
- lol, thats some wonderful insight "Corey301", but at least you didnt accuse me of being a pedaphile or something like you did some other poster. SB winning coaches are not out at 3am on a saturday night, they are probably asleep or watching tape. And accusing some grandpa of possibly molesting his grandson because he posted on an Eagles forum too late at night is truly monumental "corey301". (its in your posting log). Get some sleep.
This comment has been deleted. DooDooFresh, Chunky Roasted Peanut- Didn't Belichick go out and talk with Kelly (not the other way around) and didn't the Pats use some of Kelly's schemes? Why, yes, they did. So, maybe Kelly isn's as bad as some of you posters claim.
mike l - lol, wow. Andy Reid used to be a "genius" too early in his tenure. You see how that turned out. I am not saying Chip Kelly isnt "smart". I know he apparently is. I am saying his gimmicky system wont win a superbowl in the NFL. Gimmicky college systems DONT WIN SUPERBOWLS IN THE NFL no matter how "smart" the coach is. He might win some games, even win some playoff games, with whatever team he might go to, but it wont win a superbowl. He needs a scrambling QB, which has NEVER won a SB in NFL HISTORY. Unless he just changes the scheme to an up-tempo, no -huddle with a pocket passer, but if thats the case well ANYONE CAN RUN THAT AND MANY ALREADY DO. The idea is completely stupid and Lurie is a moron if he makes the signing, but thats pretty much already been confirmed with everything else he has done so far.
Your not making any friends CharlieG25... :( I won't bother refuting all your points as i doubt I will change your mind but scrambling QB NEVER won a SB in NFL HISTORY? John Elway? He is in the top 10 of rushing QB's in history, pretty sure he won a SB. Steve Young he has the second most rushing yards of any QB in history, won a SB. Roger Staubach was a scrambling QB won a few SB's and was only 400 yards shy of being in the top 10 of all time rushing QB's. You might not like Chip Kelly, he might not be good in the NFL but the reality is that you don't know. You are, by the way, saying that Chip Kelly isn't smart because if he can't understand or work out what apparently you can - and I am guessing that you have no coaching experience, how smart can he be? Chipshot- uh, no, your not understanding what a "scrambling" QB is. A scrambling QB is a guy that is BETTER at running then he is at paassing. A guy who can throw for a 100 QB rating like Steve Young is NOT what I am refering to as a scramlbing QB. No QB, ever, has won a superbowl BECAUSE OF THIER ABILITY AS A RUNNER. EVery QB, to ever win the game, WON WITH THIER FREAKING ARM. Steve Youngs passing yards vs rushing yards is not even close. He had 4,000 rush yards vs 34,000 passing yards. He wasnt winning superbowls because he could run, it was with his ARM. Early in his career he was a bit of a scrmabler and NEVER WON DOING IT THAT WAY. He didnt win anything until he BECAME a pocket passer with 100 QB ratings. No SCRAMLBING QB, a guy who is BETTER AT RUNNING THEN THROWING has EVER won a superbowl as far as I know. Guys like Tebow, Vick, McNair, Kordell Stewart and any other gimmicky QB that cant be a good pocket QB has never won a Superbowl in the NFL. Chip Kellys system is dependent on a scrambling QB with the threat of the run...on every play. Otherwise the play fake option with the QB holding it is worthless if the QB cant run, which is the staple of his offense right now. Do the math. Also, having 0 NFL experience is a great precurser to winning multiple superbowls. This organization is so dumb its pathetic and there will be no superbowls if Chip Kelly is hired.
- I agree you don't want the QB running around on designed runs. But the spread "read option" is a healthy dose of hand off or pass.....not hand off or run. Brady is doing it now. Kelly would bring a system that deals more with tempo rather than he same plays he runs at Oregon. He believes in the run, and uses two TE sets. You are right, all the same plays he uses now at Oregon won't work in he NFL.....but he knows that too. It would be more what you see New England doing now. I actually don't care if its Kelly(who I think will be good) or McCoy or whoever...the key will be who they get to resurrect the incredibly terrible "defense". Nick SABAN anyone?

The pro game today is an adaption of the college game from the 5-4-3 to the 4-3 to the 3-4 etc. Todays players come from all different systems and only the high level players make it in the pro's. I like change and with the right players he can be successful, and didn't Bill Walsh bring in the west coast offence from Stanford. With Kelly it all depends on the personal people bringing in the right players, with the right players this offence can be successful and fun to watch. The worst that can happen is it doesn't work, Reid didn't work for the last 5 years I want to see an aggressive team and not the same ole same ole. angrywhtguy
Les, update this. Marrone is signed by the Bills. Earl J
If Kelly is in then Vick stays cause Foles can't run his type of offense.I think McCoy is the best fit for Philly. mainstreet
SIGN Chuckie ! Bring Jon Gruden to Philly. Pay the man...he is head & shoulders above any candidate out there. Reroute the flight pattern & head to Tampa! Bring the checkbook, & the keys. Bring personality back to Philly, bring the best football mind on the planet to the LINC! frank castle
How can Lurie watch pocket QB's win Super Bowls over the past 15 years and be willing to subject us to another 5 years or so of athletic QB's schemes. Unless I hear Kelly admit that he knows this only works in college and will change for the game on Sundays. If he's sticking with his gimmicks then please Cleveland outbid Lurie. Also, Kelly's never won anything and his teams have chocked in winnable games late in the season. Gray Areas- Guess you didn't look at Oregon's record or the games they played late in the season. How about the other night against Kansas State, which was a No1 team this year? As far as not winning anything, how many titles have Marrone, Gruden, McCoy, etc. won? As many as Kelly.
mike l - Mike McCoy should be the choice. Look at his record with what he had to work with. If he could make Tebow a playoff QB he can do it with Foles.
I would think if they met for 9 hours one of the hot topics would be can you work with foles. Relax philly no we have not won a super bowl but lets hope Lurie uses all his nfl resources to pick the right coach if it is Kelly then I would think they did their due dilligence even before they met with Kelly. This is the direction the league is going with these gimmicky offences when the D can't put their hands on them. zbeachigo

One thing you have to admit. Lurie made a great hire with Andy Reid. A complete unknown gave us the best 5-6 years of football this town has ever seen. But Lurie became enamored with those 5-6 years and stayed with Reid way too long. But admit it, Lurie did his homework when he hired Reid. I have to imagine he is doing the same homework with Kelly. He's was too loyal to Reid but he's no dummy. I too, would rather have McCoy. But I'm not gonna say that Kelly is a horrible choice. Lurie obviously knows what we know about Kelly's system. I'm excited about a new offense. I don't care whose it is or what it is. Just get it done in the red zone and I'm happy. bodybaggame- It's becming ovious here that the media has no clue what is happening and are being used by agents to build hype for their clients. Hopefully Lurie meant the things he said in his press conference since that;s our only hope. There's been a lot of back and forth about Kelly's ability to adapt to the NFL but in the end its a risk, you find out after you hire him. He has said he is not married to his current offense, he's married to adapting to his situation, and others have praised his ability to do this. Unfortunately, he's only done this at Oregon so there's a lack of a track record here. I still don't think this is the desperate battle the media is making it out to be and hope Lurie is good to his word and will gather all the info on all the candidates and nake a measure decision.
Trent Dilfer won with his arm? Brad Johnson won with his arm? Elway completed 12 passes in his 1st SB win. 12. johnnews- i still say talk to lovie smith.this whole team is so undisiplined, and no college coach is gonna waltz right in and earn the respect of players on this team.they need someone with experience who will demand respect and lovie smith is the kind of coach that can do it.ill bet he can lite a fire under desean jacksons lazy a** and have whats left of this team playing at a higher level.
Hire Lovie Smith. Team need defense and discipline. Find a good offensive coordinator to fix the offense. Ssteve115
Maybe have some faith in the process. You have three very intelligent people focused on one task, collecting all sorts of data, and interviewing each person. Although as fans we have the person we think would be best, our process of selection is significantly more flawed than the process being used. Keep an open mind, and trust in the process. Bobphxville
First off, the "5-4-3" is a 12 man defense and has never been a part of any defensive game plan anywhere because it's illegal.HOWEVER, I do agree with the concept that there is nothing really new in football. The 4-3 is nothing more than the old 6-3-2 with the ends standing up and lining up a little wider. The 5-4-2 evolved into the 3-4. the old Gap 8, which was popular in the 1950s, is still used in short yardage situations. And finally, these "shotgun" and "pistol" formations are nothing more than than variants of the old Single Wing formation which Otto Graham, among others, rode to championships in the early 1950s. That being said, what is needed is a coach who can adapt his system to the personnel he has, rather than try to adapt his players to his system, (which Andy tried for years with mixed results). Chip Kelly specifically addressed this issue in one of his recent interviews, and Mike McCoy has proven he can adapt his system to what he has (See TEBOW in Denver). I'm okay with either guy. 9 hours? Have the Eagles found their next Rich Kotite? Where is Nich Skorich or Joe Kuharich when you need them? One thing for sure, KC will win a Super Bowl before PHILLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! psd
Marrone went to the Bills. gunrights7
Charlie Garner, stfu already. You are an idiot. According to you, any coach who hasn't won the Super Bowl is terrible. Now you're saying we should hire a coach that failed when they were a head coach. Dope. MikeP
History of the Eagles according to Jeff Lurie: it's Joe Banner's fault they fell apart. Banner doesn't know what he is doing. Jeff Lurie's approach to hiring a new coach: let's get the guy Joe Banner wants. My head hurts. jtj06
