Andy: Juan to Make Calls 'As I Stand Here Now'

POSTED: Monday, October 15, 2012, 12:42 PM

Eagles coach Andy Reid confronted a host of questions at his day-after news conference, in the aftermath of the Eagles' meltdown against the Lions, in which the Birds blew a 10-point lead in the final five minutes of regulation.

Reid spoke of doing a comprehensive evaluation during the bye week. Asked specifically if defensive coordinator Juan Castillo would continue to make the defensive calls in games, Reid said he would "as I'm standing here right now." That seemed less than a ringing endorsement.

Reid spoke of wanting to "tear things apart" during the bye week. He noted that there is "a lot of season ahead" for his 3-3 team. "I still believe we have a good football team," he said.

Though he expressed only lukewarm support for Castillo, the offensive line coach turned defensive coordinator, Reid vigorously disputed corner Nnamdi Asomugha's postgame contention that the Eagles changed their coverage scheme and blitzed more in the fourth quarter, after keeping the Lions in check for three quarters.

Reid did acknowledge that when the Lions flexed tight end Tony Scheffler wide, the Eagles went to dime coverage, with corner Brandon Hughes on Scheffler. That was the setup on the 57-yard broken-play reception that got the Lions back in the game, four snaps after Jeremy Maclin gave the Eagles a 23-13 lead.

Reid also scrutinized the offense's confused, horrendous start.

"We started poor. I mean poor," said Reid, who noted that the Eagles lead the NFL with 17 turnovers following two picks and a fumble against Detroit. He called that figure "ridiculous."

Reid reserved the word "pathetic" for the Eagles' final two drives, the last drive in regulation and the overtime disaster that set up the Lions' winning field goal. The Eagles had scored on their first four possessions of the second half, a touchdown and three field goals, before not scoring on their final possession of regulation, and going backward 21 yards on their only possession of OT.

There may be something to your proposal, however the last two weeks the Eagles loss because they were unable to maintain leads going into the 4th Quarter.

Blaming Vick for the Defense's inability to hold on to a league is useless, unless you're now suggesting Vick should be held accountable for the weak safety play in those games that directly attributed to those losses.

Besides, chances are good that if Vick wasn't getting creamed in the pocket he would not be in the positions to fumble. Same with the RZ Offense, the Eagles can't score because they don't have the O Linemen to punch the ball into the End Zone with one of the top RBs in the game in their backfield.

Spot on. Vick's had some turnovers where he was to blame but 90% of them are a DIRECT result of the O-line thats plain embarrassing. All the Vick haters please give me an average # of seconds Vick had to throw the ball after the snap before getting contacted - use the last two games. From what i saw, it was less than 3 seconds. THREE. I dont give a $H!t if you are Aaron rodgers you are not completing a pass when you have a Defensive end in your face 2 seconds after the ball is snapped. 2 things must happen: 1. shake up the oline until it gives QB at least 4-5 seconds to pass the ball 2.Bring back JJ blitz defense, and if it means firing Castillo, so be it.

No offensive line in football gives their qb 5 seconds to throw the ball. That's utterly ridiculous, and you think by putting in more backups(a shakeup as you called it) your gonna get better!?! Keep dreamin. The O-line was terrible and has not been good but don't let one aspect cloud your judgement so much you can't see anything else. Sounds like another Vick apologist who says oh just use the last 2 games, all because you think the O-line sucked the last 2 games so you can apologize for everything Mike has done wrong this year(Which is a ton). You guys find scapegoats at every corner for him. Just like they always go to the 6 game stretch(which they routinely say was a whole season, but wasn't) in 2010 to prove hes an elite qb. The man has an entire career worth of poor decisions and never winning big games. Defensive Coordinators love facing Vick cause he is so easy to gameplan for. Used to be keep him in the pocket and contain so he doesn't run all over the field and you'd win easily. Now hes lost a couple steps so it's keep him in the pocket and blitz, forcing him to throw or scramble and you'll get turnovers galore. Same book different page.

Hey, it's 'The Pink Floyd'. Still beating the Vick Apologist drum, are you? What happened, run out of good Michael Vick/child slavery jokes that you thought were so cute?

...by the way, there are legit arguments to be made against Vick's play that people with legit football acumen have made. But #The Pink Floyd, your blind hate of Vick does not make you one of those people. ...and no, starting Nick Foles is not an answer. I loved what Foles did in the preseason, but to say "Foles has what it takes to be a starter" like you just stated is an asinine statement, because even pro NFL coaches would not know that based on his college days and his limited amount of work in the preseason. Again, your blind hate gets in the way of facts.

And for the record, this is not about apologizing for Vick's play, but about the facts. If I really did think Foles was the better option, I would be the first one on here yelling that out. ...just look at my comments from '09 & '10 when I clearly thought Kolb was the better option over Vick, and argued tooth & nail with that point with people here on philly.com. Turns out I was wrong.

As far as the rest of the season, it would be asinine of me to still argue that this team is a contender - like I have so far this season - BUT it ain't over. The Eagles have 2 weeks to prepare for possibly the best team in the NFC at the Linc, then have a supposed easier schedule the rest of the way. After that, well...

...as far as the Castillo column, err. we'll see we'll see.

You say blind hate, yet i say look at his entire career. You say we're not a contender, yet give Vick a free pass despite his 17! turnovers in 6 games. You say look at the facts, yet give none(i've read your comment 2x now and still haven't found one fact), and then you predictably go directly to the Foles is a rookie argument because well, how else do you cover up for a guy who should be benched. Oh right, you say the next guy in line couldn't do any better. Well guess what, i say he can't do any worse!

Yes. Blind hate. Your quote - "I hear Vick has the underground market cornered on the under 10 kid fights. They steal kids from there parents yards and force them to fight in basements. Maybe that's why Mike sucks at football, he's finally found his next true passion, and his name is Lil Clubba Lang, a chubby 8 yr with a monster left hook. Overheard mike sayin he thinks he can make him a grand champion. Follow your dreams Mike." ...Any more questions?

No surprise your comment was made on a Nick Foles story. And here is the link if you just need verification:

Anyways, getting back to football talk. No one is giving Vick a free pass. I'm just stating he is the #1 option at QB as Foles has not proved anything yet in the NFL (even though I'm as pissed as anyone about his turnovers). ...You question facts after making a statement like - "Foles has what it takes to be a starter". smh. ...and I like Foles and am excited to see what happens to him - but c'mon now, lets get real.

And you want more facts? Well if you actually were able to comprehend what you watched yesterday, you would've realized that Vick was most effective on the short drops/quick reads - as Moose Johnston pointed out when the playcalling inexplicable reverted back to 7 step drops at the end of the 4th and O.T. ????

Furthermore, in the games against n.y. & pitt, Vick had a 136 passer rating against the blitz in those game - ya know, short drops/quick read passing typing situations. And I haven't the numbers yet, but Vick did throw that T.D. to Maclin against a Lions' blitz. Understand?

So we can talk facts if ya want, but with your blind hate of Vick, that might be a tough thing for you to do.

...oh, and I didn't say they definitely weren't a contender anymore, just that it's a ridiculous case to make given the way they played so far. Again, the season still has 10 games to go, the talent is there, and I've seen too many things in my life to just discount something from happening based on my own initial anger. ....The giants weren't considered a contender either last year until the last game of the season...

Michael Vick is a chump and i would be ashamed to stick up for him on a personal level. Dudes gonna be right back on the streets the second he gets canned from football, so i'll just wait till he gets busted for god knows what this time and then gloat. Back to football, I'll say his weaknesses definitely get exploited more because his coaching is severely overrated, but aren't qb's supposed to have a command of their offense, the ability to change plays, change line calls, really take control of his offense. Why doesn't Vick do this? You basically took a couple plays(Maclin td included) and you assume he can repeat these plays. He hasn't shown during his entire career hes capable of reproducing these events on any consistent basis so why assume it'll happen now? 6 lonely games is all he can call the best stretch of his career, hes a 32yr old whos past his prime and really hasn't learned a whole lot since getting here. I know this because he keeps repeating the same mistakes over and over. You keep pointing the finger at a small stretch of games just so you can keep hope alive, and i'll keep assuming he'll do exactly what he's done for the last 10 years and blow it. Which is about the only consistent thing he does.

Facts are facts, so much for reality. Oh look Castillo just got canned. What ya gonna say when Vick is next to fall, who ya gonna blame that on?. Just be real, 17 turnovers in 6 games plus another 4-5 fumbles he was lucky to get back, plus several more dropped int's, he's been terribly inconsistent yet you think i want him replaced for personal reasons. No, i hate him personally but i want him replaced cause hes the same wannabe quarterback he's been for 10 yrs!.I hated him in 2010, yet i still went to games and rooted for my team cause he has a right to do whatever he wants. He paid his dues, who doesn't accept that? You stand up for him for no apparent reason. I'm wondering if this is a black/white thing cause i can't figure out why so many people defend him no matter what he does. You should read some of my other posts. The ones saying i don't fault him for living his life however he chooses, signing a monster contract... but i don't have to pretend to respect the guy. Their have been tons of players on philly teams that i disliked personally but i don't fault them for living their life, playing a sport they love, a sport that provides for his family and i don't say get off the team for personal reasons! You apparently can't distinguish between the two for some blind hatred you have towards people who speak reality.

If you think the Eagles are going to beat Atlanta, I need to drink what you're drinkin'.

Beyond the fact the Falcon's have the very same bye week as the Eagles, the Falcons possess the right combination of talent, leadership and attitude that the Eagles dream about.

Reid's undefeated following the bye will come to an end this year.

Undefeated after the bye says otherwise and as well as Atl has been playing (some of the last few weeks show leaks), they will not run the table. The NFL is all about situation and the Eagles will be more desperate and will almost certainly get the win. If not, well then the season ends and we can all enjoy watching it go up in flames.

"If you think the Eagles are going to beat Atlanta, I need to drink what you're drinkin'."

Or smoking. Apparently, some people are hard to convince since they don't believe their lying eyes. Next five games: Falcons, Saints, Cowboys, Redskins, Panthers, and I'm not sure the Eagles are up to the task against ANY of them. Even the Redskins have gotten a whole lot tougher and they can score and look like a REAL football team in the process. Dallas is due for win and I'm sure the Eagles will oblige them. New Orleans? The Eagles will do their usual belly up routine in the face of adversity. I really don't see much chance for them to go beyond 5-11, 6-10 this season. They MAY have a chance against the Panthers. They MAY have a chance against Dallas...maybe. The OL is a mess, and Vick's generosity doesn't help matters. The D can't hold a lead so we're toast this year.

To FetchDixon: It would certainly seem you will never again watch an Eagles game!
They've way too much into T. O. Vick to begin starting someone else--excepting for injury. The collapses in the fourth quarter are absolutely typical of the NFL, where a good defensive job for three or three and a half quarters always seems to demand a change to something else. The NFL is a follow the leader league, and it seems that if one of the geniuses of NFL coaching once gets away with something that makes no sense then everyone has to follow suit. Actually Juan Castillo's defense has, generally, been fairly decent this year, at least till the last half of the fourth quarter yesterday.
BTW, must agree that T. O. Vick has been poison this year. In the NFL, the team with fewer turnovers wins the game about 80% of the time, and that is a long-time statistic. So, you can figure where I stand on a guy that's on a pace for thirty-five turnovers this year.
    GOOD GRIEF!
