Abruptly, Harris Cut
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
A day after releasing 10 players who never had much chance of making the team, the Eagles announced a single release -- that of rookie corner Cliff Harris.
Harris is a talented player with a troubled past that includes driving citations and tangles with drugs. The fact that he alone was released, on a Sunday morning, 36 hours after Harris intercepted a pass in a preseason win over the Browns, raises questions about what led to his departure. There have been indications the Eagles were concerned that Harris had not amended his lifestyle, as promised when he signed.
The Eagles must release four more players by tomorrow to get to 75, and must be at the regular-season roster limit of 53 by Friday.
Tonight is their "Flight Night" practice at the Linc, starting at 7:30.
Saturday, the team released WR Elvis Akpla, S Wade Bonner, DE Xavier Brown, WR Brian Hernandez, WR McKay Jacobson, WR Tiger Jones, G Alfred McCullough, S Tom Nelson, CB Kevin Thomas and OT Thomas Welch.
Maybe they are trying to to be crafty and sneak him back to the practice squad. GoBirds! gobirds17
If he still hasn't cleaned up his act, they might not want him representing the organization at an event. Paul SoTX
seems like a mistake as Harris looked very good in preseason games! connorjr
who cares,,,,he was not going to play anyway.... nuggett
Do they need to cut 4 more or only 1 more? They have 3 guys on reserve lists whom I believe don't count against the 75 even though they counted against the 90. ICDogg
Well they didn't want harris at fright night , that's for sure ... Also maybe Andy wanted to give him an early release hoping he can catch on with another team , he ' s done that before ... ingy9
Wow, it's as of some of these writers never spend any time learning about or paying attention to the game. Harris wasn't going to make the cut to 75. But, he might make someone else's cut of 75. When you have a lot of talent on the roster, your cast-offs are often good enough to make rosters elsewhere. So Reid cut him a day early to give him a chance to make the cut of 75 elsewhere. It's not rocket science, Bowen. JimG
Sorry, JimG, your confidence not-with-standing, your scenario is unlikely. If that was the case the Eagles would have cut him 2 days ago with all the others, as Bowen points out. UncleStosh- Imagine you're a linbacker who is cut from this squad, you should just hang it up. D-line on the other hand is going to have to let some real talent go. I wish we could bundle some of it and trade for a legit linebacker or safety, not sure that's realistic though as other teams are just going t wait till they are released.
Thanks for such a informative article......never mind. Mystified
Um...hasn't Tom Nelson, injury notwithstanding, been mentioned in every "Jaiquawn Jarrett sucks" article? He appears to have had a decent chance of at least moving past this point. KNuff
