Roseman Wrestles with Draft Process
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman met with reporters today in preparation for the NFL draft, which commences a week from this evening.
As usual, Roseman gave few cues about exactly what the team might do. But he talked extensively about the process that leads to making picks, and some of the things he said seemed to offer clues.
For one thing, when the Eagles draft in the first round, whether they stay at the 15th overall spot, move up or move down, Roseman gave the distinct impression you shouldn't expect them to take anybody who might have star-level talent but doesn't always play hard. One of the things the Eagles have learned through trial and error is that you can't teach or instill effort.
(My purely subjective interpretation: don't hold your breath waiting for Quinton Coples, the North Carolina defensive end who was up-and-down despite being huge and talented.)
Roseman, who agreed with draft analysts that defensive tackle is the deepest position in the 2012 draft, said the Eagles' thinking on so-called "character" issues has evolved over the past several years. He said there are some situations that are "dealbreakers," but that the team has learned to make some allowances for "young men in college and their lifestyle."
He said trading for linebacker DeMeco Ryans "gives us some flexibility in the draft," meaning they don't HAVE to take a linebacker high now, but Roseman stopped well short of saying linebacker isn't still a priority.
Consistently since the end of the season, Roseman has beaten the drum for the idea that this year, the Eagles will take the best player available to them in the first round, instead of reaching to fill a need. It's obvious he believes they have strayed from that idea in some drafts, and paid for it by missing on some picks.
Roseman also said he feels that sometimes the Eagles have been swayed too much by the Senior Bowl practices or the Scouting Combine, Instead of basing picks on how players looked on game tape, over time.
- Please, not another fastball or a guy with a history of injuries. TVGuy22

Mrs. Roseman's little boy, Howie, has no idea what he is doing. coloradoeagle- This picture that Les Bowen took (Philly.com budget getting that small?)reminds me of the movie "12 Angry Men"...How did the BurgerKing get to be head of the table, anyway?
bearsfriend - my favorite is still the picture of him in his camo Eagles hat with the big grin on his face. "look ma, they call me GM."

If they end up taking David DeCastro at 15 Eagles fans will kick and scream but it would be the right thing. DeCastro is too good a prospect to pass up even though they signed Evan Mathis to a new deal. The Mathis deal is probably only guaranteed for the first year anyway. soulman386- What I'm getting from Roseman's quotes are Barron (hurt for the post season workouts) or Dre Kirkpatrick (weed) could be possibilities in the first round...or maybe Zach Brown in Round 2...Anyway, it's pretty cool the writers get complimentary bottled water.

Great. here comes another "high motor" guy kenny.328.usa
If there is one thing for certain it's that you can count on another Brandon Graham and not the next all world Jason Pierre Paul breed of player. birds748
Rare insight into why the Eagles drafts consistently suck. When you must win now there's no time for learning on the job. An experienced guy already knows this:
"Roseman also said he feels that sometimes the Eagles have been swayed too much by the Senior Bowl practices or the Scouting Combine, Instead of basing picks on how players looked on game tape, over time."

old news...thanks for the non-update SkipinWV
why do I have the feeling that when the eagles draft next week the sound you here will be 'OMG,WHO?" sewell guy
Yes! Effort! Let's go for undersized high-motor! phillipkatz
Isn't trading up reaching for a player of need rather than taking the best player available? Just sayin.
I think trading up would be a big mistake. If anything they should trade down. That way they get extra 2 or 3 round picks and can still get someone like Brokers or Hightower and still be able to TCB at other areas. Unstable1
Hold on to your b.lls, because misdirection and Eagle Speak has taken over and with the Spin Doctor soon to follow. For example - Yea his small, undersized, and was assessed by all the pundits as the 2nd best TE in the draft in a weak draft for that position. The pundits said he was at best a late 1st and more likely a 2nd round pick. But we traded up 13 spots because he has a MOTOR!!! sound familiar
3 straight terrible drafts supported by Eagles Speak has turn this fan into a skeptic.

Looks like PeeWee Roseman is spending more time in the playhouse eating chili dogs with King Cartoon than spending time on his bicylcle. Astro Jones
HE IS SO UNQUALIFIED....three years as a fantasy football player, two years as Joe's valet, 3 years in the mail room, 2 years of horrible drafts, proving once more it is not what you know but who you know and kiss up to......Yes, I am envious, and having played football in high school, been a fan for 50 years, subscribe to the NFL Channel and watch sport centered endlessly and all three days of the draft for the last 8 years I feel I am eminently qualified......Dam, if I would have only take the job as elevator operator at the Linc ....It could have been me.......Just think, working for an owner who keeps everything the same after he says the season was "Completely Unacceptable" The perfect job, for a politicain, a union guy or the talent selector for the franchise that has won nothing in 14 years..........Yup, we are in good hands....and our only hope is that Jeffery gets bored and moves on and the new owners bring it real football people in the front office.... nuggett- You must be the real life Al Bundy. The rest of these cats must be the the high school/elementary drop outs that were at the 1999 draft.
Hmm this arrogant FO actually publicly admitting mistakes gives me some hope. Let's see if the mean it and draft the BPA even if it's not a "need". Only in Philly...- I don't care who it is,as long as they're small, short, and have a motor!
Roseman's track reocrd is identical to historical stock market trading statistics, where "2 out of every 3" picks are loosers.
Get a GM who can walk the talk. Lerze777
Lets trade our 1st round pick to Dallas and take their 2nd round pick. zeke128
He will be a defensive player on the smallish side for his position with a high motor. Did I fail to mention that both Reid and Vick must go? ManU63
"but he talked extensively about the process that leads to making picks" ummmmmm this guy does not know how to make picks so how did he speak about it extensively section117
Past performace is the best indicator of future performance. That's a fundamental change in evaluatin criteria. They are giving potential less weight. They also recognize that putting a person in a professional setting with structure won't necessarily result in consistancy and effort. And they're saying that it's hard to make it in the NFL so there best chance of selecting a future starter is to pick the most talented player available regardless of position or need. I assume that the positions would carry some weight in the evaluation. If the talent is equal, you'd take a defensive or offensive lineman over a full back, right? They made some picks where they gave need so much weight that it resulted in them selecting players in high rounds that didn't have the talent, willpower, intelligence or whatever to contribute, start or bring value in a trade. You need your 1st and 2nd round picks to start and contribute. If you pick a couple Pro Bowlers, you're an above average GM. I'd be interested in hearing what adjustment they make to the evaluation criteria as they go through the draft rounds. Do they give more weight to the Scouting Combine or look for Special Team or other role type players. MikeP
Finally love to hear someone in NFL basing decisions on players actual game tapes and not combine numbers and senior bowl BS!!! About time. I bet if they actually start doing that going forward we will avoid Mamula type draft decisions and get real players who can start and make an impact! connorjr
Count Chocula Kiper wants them to trade up a few slots to ensure they pick the Safety from Bama before the Cowgirls...consider it done that the Eagles will trade down to ensure they draft the ex-Policeman from Saskatoon instead! BirdinParadise
They are settingus up for "the best player available happened to be a QB" CouchKing
LOL LOL LOL, can't help but laugh at some of these comments, Howie is the peewee, little boy who doesn't know what he's doing etc. but yet he is the one sitting at the board table, with a multi million dollar contract, while you folks sit on the internet daily posting stupidazz comments. LOL LOL I think that I have heard it all LOL LOL charmaine
The Roseman dude don't look like no peeWee to me. He look like he ate way to many doughnut with cheese. jippy from camden- Like I said Howie is sitting at board table making bigtime decision and money and you folks sit on the internet trying to be..................hell I don't know what you're trying to be LOL LOL LOL LOL

u guys prefer a non high motor guy?high motor is important.u guys will complain about anything whiny cry babies Sean s.
It's an amazing confession that they relied so much on the Senior Bowl for their picks. Lazy recruiting. I guess the staff didn't want to interupt Andy while he was eating a cheese steak. 4thand10
Translation: Look for more undersized, high-motor guys. 8 and 8 and they still think they invented the game. hunglikeaton
time for a ham sandwich sickoflosing
Are they really gonna draft the BEST guy available? Or someone who will fill their expectation as a player like Graham being a speedy gonzalez? Ace-Philadelphia
Ah, draft time or as I like to call it "The Weekend of Inadequacy" sickoflosing- They have pills for that.
mccloudmj
Most athletic, best on the board = 240lb DE who rides the bench for 3 years prior to being cut. billtfla
Oh mio dio...Howie looks like the little boy from my old shtetl that ate too much rugelach before trying out for the bocci ball team. Oy!! Alphonso Kravitz
Relax gang! You are all hyperventilating. There is nothing you can do about the picks anyway. Odds are in the teams favor, you have to wise up sooner or later and we have waited a long time for the lesson of wasted draft picks to sink in. unbelieveable!
Remember that defense is what wins games. Just my opinion but 1st and 2nd picks for Eagles should go to add to the defense. Use other picks on best available offense guys. skipdog
We get to razz Roseman and Reid all we want. We're fans, they're making big bucks, it's part of the entertainment deal. If GMs all had the benefit of hindsight, LeSean McCoy probably would have gone around #12 in the draft. Roseman/Reid were the first to take him (around #45?). Trent Cole would have gone in the 2nd round or sooner. Reid/Heckert were the first to take him, in the 5th. Tom Brady would have been drafted in the top 3, instead of #199.
Truth is, the NCAA and NFL are very different football leagues, and nobody can make very accurate projections about who will pan out. I was high on Maurkice Pouncey. Totally right. I thought Winston Justice was a steal at around #33. Today I'd take him around #220. I had no idea Clay Matthews would be so good, and 23 GMs whiffed on that one too.
If any of us were really good talent evaluators, we'd be under contract to some team right now, because they'd gladly pay big bucks to someone who could do this better than anyone else. They could care less whether we'd played football or had a college degree. I may never let Roseman hear it, but he's far better than us armchair experts. armchairGM
I like Domo's (or somebody's) pick in the mock, David DeCastro. Now that's taking the best player available at #15. Unless Cox or Kuechly fall that far. armchairGM
So charmaine, you really sound like you know stuff! Can you stop "LOLing" long enough to illuminate us on your insight to Howie's special qualifications to evaluate NFL talent? Some of us just look at results and so have no clue how great a drafter he is. steelydad- I'm sure its hard for you to comprehend, which is exactly my point. Sorry can't stop laughing your comment just made me laugh more LOL LOL LOL Oh since some of you folks know so much go turn in your resumes, which would include all of your qualifications, and let us know how things work out for ya LOL
charmaine
some of you morons were screaming for Vontaze Burfict. Turns out the guy might not even get drafted at all.
Brandon Graham was playing well and probably would have been a force last year if he hadn't had a serious knee injury. And at 270 he's hardly "undersized".
There's a reason you're fans, and not football professionals.

Howie just said it: "ALL IN" with...Michael Vick.

I think everyone is missing the true angle of this story, remember that Andy story couple weeks back about him leaving if he didnt get more control, well this Howie's shot back "hey we've drafted Andy's final say way and now were gonna do it my way", colossal power struggle and everyone's sleepin on it Onlineps2beast- maybe they should actually go and see these guys instead of watching dvd's of their greatest hits.
Howie Roseman wouldnt know talent if it crawled up his Boyd's slacks and lit a fire. He wouldnt know how to put on shoulder pads without a graphical display. I cant believe The Colts got Grigson and we got this fakeass GM who would be a below average scout. shirleyf
