Police in Center City are investigating a petty theft that quickly turned into a car accident on 15th Street near Market Tuesday night.
About 10 p.m. two women in a car asked to use a passerby’s cellphone. Police were unsure of the person’s age and gender immediately after the accident.
They pedestrian obliged and handed their phone over — and the women tried driving off with it, dragging the passerby behind.
A 21-year-old man was clinging to life after taking three bullets of more than 15 shots fired at him on a West Philadelphia block Tuesday night, police said.
Chief Inspector Scott Small said the shooting scene on Chancellor Street near 53rd was littered with 9mm shell casings and bullet fragments and marked by a Mercedes with a shot-out rear windshield near where the victim had been standing.
“He was supposed to be leaning against this Mercedes that was shot,” Small said. “Most [spent shell casings] are within feet, so they came right up on him. They meant business.”
Two men are in critical condition after a double shooting in Wynnefield Tuesday evening.
Chief Inspector Scott Small said shots were fired at 5:03 p.m. on Berks Street near 54th in the driveway of the William B. Mann Elementary School. Cops from the 19th District, headquartered at 61st Street and Haverford Avenue, arrived at the scene and found a 36-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the back of his head and took him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in extremely critical condition.
Small said a 22-year-old man was also shot in the left side of the jaw and in the left shoulder, but drove himself to Presbyterian Hospital. After he was stabilized, the man was taken to HUP where he is also in critical condition.
Cops on Monday released the names of three men shot to death in separate incidents Thursday and Friday in Philadelphia.
Killed by a shotgun blast to the face at point-blank range while sitting in a Nissan sedan in West Philly’s Mill Creek section on Thursday night was 33-year-old Rahspe Athy, who lived on Hoopes Street near 50th a few blocks from where he died, police said.
Investigators determined that an argument led to that shooting, but no arrests have been made.
Cops are looking for two men who they say held up a sporting goods store in Kensington Monday afternoon and fled with cash from the register.
Police said the men, at least one armed with a semiautomatic handgun, burst into Olympia Sports on Kensington Avenue just south of Allegheny and took an unknown amount of cash out of a register. No employees were injured in the holdup.
Both suspects are described as black men in their early 20s, one of whom wore a short-sleeve black shirt, the other of whom wore a full-length blue cleaning suit. Both were last seen headed eastbound on Lippincott Street.

Cops declared a barricade in South Philadelphia Sunday afternoon after they said a woman fired shots from an apartment balcony then hid inside the apartment.
Around 4:20 p.m., police were called to 12th and Shunk streets, where they say a woman was firing shots from the second-floor balcony. Cops said the woman fired two shots in the direction of police before going into the apartment and refusing to come out, prompting authorities to declare a barricade. No injuries to police were reported.

A 23-year-old man is dead and a 26-year-old man is clinging to life after a double shooting Friday night in East Mount Airy.
Shots rang out on Sharpnack Street between Chew Avenue and Musgrave Street about 8:34 p.m. and the unidentified 23-year-old victim was wounded in his head, chest, back and three times in his leg. The older victim was wounded in his chest and leg, police said.
Police are searching for a group of four gun-toting men who burst into a convenience store in East Germantown and robbed the business on Monday afternoon.
The men entered the store on Woodlawn Street near Chew Avenue at about 1 p.m. and forced their way into an office, police said. They took an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene on foot toward Devon Street.
The armed robbery was recorded on a surveillance camera, and police are looking to the public to help identify and arrest the robbers.
