A 19-year-old woman took a stray bullet to the head in Wynnefield Heights Tuesday night when police say a man running from two gunmen tried to get into a house where she was babysitting.
The woman collapsed just inside the doorway of the house, on Aberdeen Street near Parkside Avenue, and was pronounced dead there at 9:19 p.m., according to Chief Inspector Scott Small.
Lt. John Walker of the Southwest Detective Division gave this account of the shootout, which started just after 9 p.m.:
Police are investigating a shooting in the city's Strawberry Mansion section that left two women wounded -- one critically -- late Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the victims, ages 22 and 24, were in a third-floor apartment on Diamond Street near 31st were shot at 4:18 p.m. The younger woman was wounded once in her neck and the older woman was hit once in each leg and once in the abdomen, according to investigators.
Both were taken to Temple University Hospital, where the woman shot in the neck was in critical condition. The other victim is stable, police said.
Two young children witnessed a horrific act of violence late Thursday night when police say they saw someone shoot their father in the head, killing him, on a North Philadelphia street corner.
Cops were called to Cornwall Street near Reese around 9:20 p.m. and found the 32-year-old victim lying on the sidewalk bleeding from a single gunshot wound to the head, Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
He was pronounced dead on the pavement at 9:29 p.m., Small said.

A 46-year-old man was shot during what cops say may have been a robbery attempt in North Philadelphia just above Chinatown Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the victim was approached at 10th and Noble streets around noon and shot once in the leg. It was unclear if anything was taken from the man. He was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital and listed in stable condition around 4 p.m., according to a police spokeswoman.
Immediately after the shooting, cops apprehended a possible suspect nearby. Police said that person was in custody and being questioned late Wednesday afternoon.
A 61-year-old man who was shot in his hand during an attempted armed robbery in North Philadelphia drove himself to the hospital afterward and was listed in stable condition Tuesday night, police said.
Around 6:35 p.m. the victim was walking along Front Street near Somerset when he was approached by two gun-toting men who told the man to “give it up,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
The man refused to hand over his belongings and was shot once in his left hand, Small said. The two suspects fled the scene on foot without taking any of the man’s belongings. Detailed descriptions of the suspects were not available Tuesday night.
Police are investigating the death of an unidentified 21-year-old man whose body was found in a house in Logan Tuesday afternoon.
Cops in the 35th District responded to a house on Marvine Street near Ruscomb around 5 p.m. after one of the victim’s relatives found his partially decomposing body, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
The Medical Examiner was called to the scene and found two gunshot wounds to the man’s head and one to his back, Small said.
Police have released video showing a suspect in an Oct. 4 shooting that left a 25-year-old man wounded in Grays Ferry.
Around 9:30 p.m. that Thursday, police said, the victim was driving home from work and heard someone on the street call out to him at the intersection of 31st and Reed streets. When he looked, another man was coming toward the passenger side of his vehicle wielding a gun.
As the victim drove away, the gunman fired several shots at the car, wounding him in the leg, cops said. The shooter is described as a thin black man, 6 feet tall who wore a black coat and blue jeans.
