Gunfire shattered the peace of a late-summer evening at a crowded North Philadelphia playground Monday, leaving a teenager dying on the pavement of a gunshot wound to the chest.
Chief Inspector Scott Small said police were called to the Cecil B. Moore Recreation Center playground, on 22nd Street near Huntingdon, just before 6 p.m. for the report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found the 18-year-old victim lying on his back in the middle of the playground, unresponsive.
He was rushed to Temple University Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him. He was pronounced dead at 6:11 p.m. of a single gunshot wound through the heart, cops said.
A 24-year-old woman was found strangled to death inside a house in East Germantown Monday afternoon, police said.
Around 2:30 p.m., police responded to a house on Chelten Avenue near Chew and found the unidentified woman. A 28-year-old male suspect was still on the scene when police and medics arrived, said Officer Tanya Little, a police department spokeswoman.
The relationship between the victim and the man was not immediately clear, police said. The man was taken into custody, but charges had not been filed against him as of 7:20 p.m.

A 27-year-old off-duty Philadelphia Police officer is in critical but stable condition after he was struck by a car while riding his motorcycle in Cheltenham, police said.
Cheltenham police said the officer was riding near Front Street and Dewey Road around 3 p.m. when a silver Buick Park Avenue crashed into his bike.
Police are searching for a man who was recorded fleeing the scene of a stabbing in Southwark on Aug. 13.
The unidentified victim was driving along Federal Street near 7th and stopped at a stop sign around 10:10 a.m., police said. When the suspect approached the victim’s car and kicked his driver’s side door, the victim got out of the car to confront the suspect. The suspect stabbed the man and fled west on Federal Street.
The suspect is described as a clean-shaven Asian or Hispanic man who is between 30 and 40-years-old. He is about 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighs about 180 pounds and has a stocky build. The man was wearing a white T-shirt, khaki shorts, black high-top sneakers and a black baseball cap.
Police are looking for a man who broke into a Feltonville beauty salon and stole several items on Aug. 30.
On Monday, cops released surveillance video in the burglary of Elsa Unisex Salon, on 5th Street near Wingohocking. They said the man got into the business just before 11:30 p.m. that night by removing a security gate and air conditioner, then climbing in through a side window.
He's described as black, between 25 and 30, with a medium complexion, medium build and shaved head, police said. He wore a white shirt, light-colored shorts and black sneakers at the time of the burglary.
Seven people were shot - three fatally - on Philadelphia streets in the span of 10 hours from Saturday night to Sunday morning, police said.
The bloodshed began around 6:48 p.m. Saturday when a 28-year-old man was shot several times in the head while in the driver's seat of a Chrysler minivan on Sartain Street near Porter in South Philadelphia, according to police.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was transported to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:07 p.m.
Leonel Rivera, 23, of Reading, was arrested Friday night after he allegedly held a 2003 Dodge Neon for ransom and tried arranging a meeting in Fairhill with the car’s owner, police said.
Earlier this week, an unidentified woman borrowed the car from her ex-boyfriend’s father in Fox Chase. The woman traveled to the area of 2nd Street near Lehigh Avenue, and was most likely in the neighborhood looking for drugs, police in the East Detective Division said.
While she was in Fairhill, the woman lent the car to a man she claimed she didn’t know and he rented the car to Rivera for $80, police said.
Two men are wanted for robbing a gas station in Overbrook Park at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon, police said. Surveillance cameras recorded the incident and the footage was released to the public on Friday.
The suspects walked into the gas station on Haverford Avenue near Brookhaven Road around 5:45 p.m. One of the men pulled a silver revolver on two employees and demanded money, police said. The clerk handed the suspects about $150. The robber was unsatisfied and demanded that the clerk give him more money and threatened to kill him, police said.
The suspect began counting down and one of the emplyoees picked up a metal chair and chased the men out of the store, police said.
