Southwest Philadelphia shooting leaves man, 29, in critical condition

Police are investigating a shooting in Southwest Philadelphia that left a 29-year-old man in critical condition Monday night.

Police are investigating a shooting in Southwest Philadelphia that left a 29-year-old man in critical condition Monday night.

The man was on 71st Street near Greenway Avenue around 8:30 p.m. when someone opened fire on him, wounding him twice in the groin, police said. Medics rushed the victim to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was listed in critical condition about a half-hour after the shooting.

Police reported no arrest or motive in the shooting.

The man was the third person shot in the span of about nine hours on Monday, after a violent weekend in Philadelphia that left 23 people wounded, according to police, including six who were shot -- one fatally -- Sunday night at 54th Street and Florence Avenue in Kingsessing.

Still, shooting victims are down from this time last year. For a more in-depth look at that reduction, pick up a copy of tomorrow's Daily News.
