West Philly murder pushes 2012 homicide count to 30

A 23-year-old man shot and killed near 56th and Arch streets Wednesday afternoon became the city's 30th homicide victim of 2012.

A man shot in the abdomen in West Philadelphia Wednesday afternoon was able to stagger half a block before he collapsed on the street and was rushed to the hospital.

Police said the 23-year-old victim was sitting in a brown Jeep Cherokee on Arch Street near 56th at 2:30 p.m. when he was shot once. He left the vehicle and made it about half a block down Frazier Street toward Market before collapsing.

Medics rushed the man to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead at 3 p.m. His slaying happened within minutes of an apparent murder-suicide in the city's Logan section, bringing the year's homicide count to 30 in 25 days.
