West Philadelphia woman arrested on animal cruelty charges
A West Philadelphia woman was arrested on animal cruelty charges Tuesday for allegedly killing a stray cat and seriously injuring two others, Pennsylvania SPCA officials said.
Humane law enforcement officers responded to a home on Westminster Street near 48th, in the Mill Creek section of West Philadelphia, and found that the unidentified woman doused the stray cats with ammonia.
The cats were taken to the Pennsylvania SPCA headquarters on Erie Avenue near Whitaker in Hunting Park for treatment, said Wendy Marano, a PSPCA spokeswoman.
"If people have an issue with cats in their neighborhood there are agencies and organizations that can help,” said George Bengal, head of humane law enforcement. “This is not the proper way to deal with animals. People shouldn't resort to cruel methods."
Information on the woman’s age was not immediately available. She was being processed at the Philadelphia Police Southwest Detective Division on Pine Street near 55th Marano said.
