Was your bicycle stolen?

You can see if it's in the bevy of bikes police will display today at the Major Crimes Unit's office, in an effort to return them to their rightful owners.

Police found about 75 bikes on March 23 from the basement of a home on Lehigh Avenue near 22nd, when officers raided a residence believed to be involved in illegal dogfighting. Besides the bikes, cops found 11 pit bulls, a puppy and dogfighting paraphernalia such as a treadmill for training dogs, injectable drugs and a computer. They made at least one arrest.

Officers have tried to reunite the stolen bikes with their owners by comparing their make, model, color and serial numbers to bike-theft reports. Many bikes, however, were untraceable. The bike display will be between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. today at Major Crimes at Whitaker and Macalester streets. Citizens should bring paperwork that could prove ownership and theft complaints they filed with police. Questions? Call Major Crimes at (215) 686-3396 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
