An Amber Alert was issued last night after a custody dispute ended in gunfire in West Philadelphia and the triggerman fled with his 3-year-old daughter, police said.
Adam Johnson, 24, apparently got into a heated argument with the mother of his daughter, Amber Johnson, on Osage Avenue near 59th Street at about 7:30 p.m., said Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives.
Johnson fired several shots during the argument, one of which grazed the face of little Amber’s 6-month-old sister, who was inside her mother's house. The baby was treated at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

At about 11 p.m., police  found little Amber alive and well in the Lansdowne, Pa., home of Johnson's girlfriend, Walker said. Johnson fled his girlfriend's home after he saw a TV news report about the shooting. Johnson, of Belmont Avenue near Westminster, is wanted on charges that include aggravated assault, recklessly endangering the welfare of another person and weapons violations.  Anyone with information can contact police at 215-686-3183.

hollowhustla and ihatestupidpeople: At the time that I posted this story, the investigators believed Adam Johnson did indeed have some custody rights, but the specifics of the arrangement (i.e., weekly visitation, biweekly, etc.) were not clear. What is clear -- at least to me -- is that we should all be thankful the 6-month-old suffered only a graze wound and nothing worse. I'll be happy to post an update for you guys when I learn more information.

Gotta say, shooting an infant isn't exactly the best endorsement in the world for his parental abilities....

HE BOUGHT A GUN TO WHERE HIS DAUGHTER LIVED! HE FIRED THAT GUN INto HIS DAUGHTER'S HOUSE AND WOUNDED HER SISTER! IN FRONT OF HIS DAUGHTER! HE ABANDONED HER WITH A WOMAN WHO WAS NOT HER MOTHER AND WENT ON THE LAM! REAL RESPONSIBLE! We don't need to know what the issue was or what kind of fatHer he was. HE PROVED IT LAST NIGHT!!

This guy is apparently upset over visitation rights, so he does something that will cause him to lose any hope of seeing his children at all. Smart.

What is it with these people????? ... no value for human life, not even their own flesh and blood means anything to this THUG. He doesnt want that CHILD IN HIS LIFE ... it's called leverage. That why he took the child. If he had any scent of values for his children he would had thought pass the tip of his d&%K and realize that his actions could have killed someone. Now he'll be arrested and thrown in jail and an absent father ... go figure!

i might also go bats#*t crazy if someone tried to keep me from my kids, but i can't envision a circumstance that would make me fire pot-shots into the house where they're sitting. he hit a child in the lip!!! that's about a fraction of an inch from pure horror!!!

ihatestupidpeople - True, but if a non custodian has NEVER or even rarely been apart of the child's life, then out of the blue decides they want to physically take the child, as the custodian you have to be leery. We can't assume this father was or wasn't taking care of his child because the story is incomplete. Sense? Since when has common sense played apart in anything that's been reported? Shooting into a home is far from common sense. I have to agree that there are more fathers that do an extraordinary job as a parents than the deadbeats that don't. But, it shouldn't be written about because it's what parents are supposed to do.

In most of these cases, the guy's been ordered to do things the court's way, not his way, and he's going to think he can just circumvent that with Mom using temper, etc., then Mom says no, etc., tempers flare, but in this case the guys got a gun, and he's not being rational. Obviously this man has a dangerous temper that almost resulted in the loss of life of a child. Let's put the children first. If you are saying you'd "snap" if someone tried to keep me from my kid, you are not putting that kid's well being first, but your own needs.

I think people are saying not that he's black therefore X, but that this is no way to go about the thing.

This story is pretty ironic. You have a young, black male who actually WANTS to be in his child's life. That's something you don't see everyday.

i think saying we don't have ALL the info has to work both ways. if we all understand that the reporting at the dn isn't thorough then we have to assume there are other facts. When you pose a question like "how often was he seeing his child" that is a loaded question that automatically looks at the father unfavorably. Why can't we assume he was taking care of this responsibility and therefore snapped? That makes more sense than he wasn't seeing his daughter and snapped. Again we hear so much about men not being fathers and very little about the men who are doing a great job, so society accepts this as the prevailing truth.

ihatestupidpeople - I agree with you, but because this article (like many others in the DN) is not written well we as readers have no idea what the custody dispute involved. Did the father have ANY custody rights? How often was he seeing his child? Has he EVER supported his child financially, spiritually, emotionally? We are in the dark. We only know that this lost soul shot into a house and injured an infant. John 10:10

i think we live in society that values more the love a mother has for her child than a father for his. yes we as a society have a concerning epidemic of fathers not being fathers. however time after time i have seen good men want to be involved (actively) yet mothers cut off their right to their child. yes what this man did was inexcusable however i love my son to death and would snap as well if someone tried to keep me from him.
