Update: Police: 2 victims in SW Philadelphia shooting were innocent

A 21-year-old woman who caught a stray bullet to the head inside her Southwest Philadelphia home when a shooting erupted a block away late Wednesday night was not the only innocent victim of the shooting, police said today.

A 41-year-old man wounded in the shoulder on Daggett Street near Dicks Avenue was also a bystander, Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives said. The man had been standing outside his girlfriend's house smoking a cigarette at the time of the shooting when he caught the stray bullet. The woman, who was in her bedroom on Buist Avenue near 65th Street, suffered a graze wound. Both innocent victims were expected to recover, police said.

Walker said investigators believe a group of young men was hanging out at Daggett and Dicks around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday when three other men – described as black, between 18 and 20, and wearing dark hooded sweatshirts – approached them, pulled guns and unloaded at least 32 shots in their direction. One man from the group targeted, a 19-year-old, was wounded in the head and remains in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania today. Walker said police do not believe that any of the men in the group returned fire.

The shooters then ran to the corner of 65th Street and Dicks Avenue and took off in a cream-colored sedan, which a witness followed south on 65th Street to Lindbergh Boulevard, then to 64th Street before the witness lost the car, Walker said. Police are reviewing surveillance footage from the area to determine where the car traveled after that.

Police are still investigating what motivated the shooting, and Walker said spent shell casings from at least two different guns – a .40-caliber and a 9mm – were found at the scene.

Walker said police have determined that a man found with a gunshot wound at 61st Street and Elmwood Avenue around the same time as the shooting at Daggett and Dicks was not involved in that shooting. That man, Walker said, was wounded in a shootout with another man near the intersection where he was found.

This afternoon, less than a mile from last night's shooting scene, a man was critically wounded in a domestic shooting on 74th Street near Island Avenue in Eastwick. Walker said in that shooting, a woman and her boyfriend were sitting in a car on the block when her ex-boyfriend and his cousin pulled up. A confrontation ensued, and the ex-boyfriend's cousin pulled a gun and fired six shots into the car, wounding the woman's 23-year-old boyfriend several times in the arms and legs.

The woman then took off at a high sped, Walker said, and collided with another car at Island and Buist avenues. Two people in the car suffered minor injuries. The wounded boyfriend is currently in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and undergoing surgery.

Walker said police have a suspect in that shooting, but have not yet made an arrest.
