Man, woman killed in West Phila. double shooting
This post has been updated, and the address of the incident has been corrected.
Homicide detectives were investigating a double shooting in University City that left a man and a woman dead Monday night.
Chief Inspector Scott Small said a man in his 50s and a woman in her 40s were found shot to death in the front bedroom of a house on Wiota Street just north of Filbert. Small said the man was shot once in the head and the woman once in the chest. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by medics. Shell casings were found at the scene, Small said, and one witness was taken to the Homicide Unit for questioning.
The shooting happened at 9:29 p.m., according to Lt. Joseph Walsh of the Southwest Detective Division.
As of late Tuesday afternoon, police had not yet identified the victims.
It doesn't matter where the shooting happened. What matters is that two more people are dead. The nameless victims in this article is what upsets me. I knew the man, his name was Howard. I have known him since I was 6 years old. He worked for my father and was a hardworking kind soul. Why did the reporters fail to mention his name?! If it was 2 white people the papers would be all over it- we would still be hearing about it. It is so sad to me that this may in fact be all we hear about Howard's murder. The shooting happened in a property my father owns. All we are told is that there was no sign of forced entry, there was a witness and shells left at the scene. All I know is that my family is going to have to clean up the mess that was left and while we are there, sad and angry that this happened, we can't even be guaranteed that we will ever know the answers surrounding Howard's death. At this point this is the third friend I have lost being shot somewhere in between Lancaster Avenue and Filbert street. To Montrell, Jermaine, and Howard- may your killers be caught, and justice be served. I hope we hear more about this and that there is some progress made in the case. My heart goes out to all of those who have lost someone dear to gun violence. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. And we as people need to put down the guns and realize that taking a human life a crime and not a right. liv2vivo- Since when is a killing in West Phila news? Having a witness coming forward would be news! Ben Fan

By all accounts in Texas they got rid of the Dems and the level of overt poverty in Texas rivals that of Somalia. If we didn't push the dredges of society into some of the little enclaves that exist in Phila they would be your neighbors. Dexter

Want to live in a safer city? Get rid of the Dems. This is not rocket science, everyday its the same people, its almost impossible to live a quality life in these areas.

this happened right across the street from me. it's NOT in belmont. it's on Wiota between Filbert and Powelton. we are most definitely in University City. addieplum
want a safer city? Every law-abiding citizen who can legally own and carry a firearm should. Period. crimewriter
Is this really news. imarealist
Directly from the UC District website: "University City boundaries are, on the east, 29th Street and the Schuylkill River; on the west, 50th Street; on the north, Spring Garden Street (to 40th Street), Powelton Avenue (to 44th Street), and Market Street; and on the south, Civic Center Boulevard, University Avenue and Woodland Avenue." phillyskyline
Actually, it's not University City. The boundary goes to Spring Garden in that area. It's Belmont or Mantua, take your pick. The reporter was correct. phillyskyline
Hey Blakelock, did Sir Robert Peele's circa 1829 prevention principles in policing musings effect this case in the Community Policing mode? Keep working on your criminal justice degree online...Despite the new 5 year strategic plan, Philly needs law enforcers out there, not sociologists and this is a firm example of the life and death struggle of our citizens and our police. The reigning principle of modern urban policing is to enforce the law or chaos will dominate our lives... NICOT PPD 81-98' ret. NICOT

noncents- No way is part of town UC. Definitely Belmont/Mantua. Not the worst part of town, but far from the nicest. And Penn is a bit south of there.
And of course rental agencies will try to market the area as UC, they're trying to lure naive students to there properties. I've seen properties at 52th & Chestnut marketed as UC, doesn't mean it is.

Not even criminals take time off for Labor Day. SirNigel
so wat its Nawf of Market.. Why are there signs stating university city... rental properties.. university.. university cith high school is called wat... The redCross shelter is in what section of the city.. University of Pennsylvania is right there.. I can throw a rock at the building where this incident happened... (sarcasm)..Its university only when they want it to be.. I walkl i=anywhere in Philadelphia what does that supposed to me scary..cracker noncents- If this took place on Wiota near Wallace, it's not University City, plain and simple. If it took place on Wiota near Filbert as other news agencies are reporting, then it could be considered university city. Either way, I don't know what is worse, this double homicide or your massacring of the English language.
- That area is not University City. It's north of Market. Try walking down a street in that area at 9pm and tell me if it feels the same as walking down Walnut at 38th Street.
This area is University City.. Lets call it wat it is... its so ironic how you journalist decided to label an area based on the good/evil... This was personal. Im sure they knew their killer... noncents
So much for the Mayor and Police Commissioner promising a safer city. There have been many shootings that we aren't even hearing about. I guess they think if we don't hear about them we will think the city is safer. Not. keapitreal- How are you so sure that as a result of these murders the city of Phila isn't going to be safer? Not all murders are necessary a bad thing to a community. Some people in a community need eliminating and the legal enforcers can't do the job.
